“A comfortable oasis in a great location”
Reviewed 10 May 2011

My husband and I stayed at Hotel Andino, using it as a base for exploring a great deal of Ecuador. Miguel, the owner, could not have done more to assist us in booking a rental car, storing luggage for us, doing our laundry, and in general, becoming a dear friend in the process. Miguel and his lovely wife bought the property 2 years ago and are slowly making many improvements. He will assist with anything a guest might need. The breakfasts are hearty, fresh and plentiful. You are welcome to use the kitchen should you wish to make sandwiches, etc. The rooms are spacious, simple and clean. The hotel is located on a very quiet street within a 10 minute walk of the tourist market and the trendy Mariscal Sucre district. You could not ask for more.

Hotel Andino was a great place to stay while we were in Quito. It was within easy walking distance of great food and shopping, but just far enough away to ensure a quiet night's sleep. The hotel was affordable, clean, comfortable and secure, and allowed us to experience Ecuador much more directly than a stay in a five-star hotel. The other guests were quite a mix of locals and foreign travelers and they were easy to interact with.

Don Miguel, the proprietor, was terrific. He was a great source of information about how to get around, where to go and what to see. He regularly went the extra mile for his quests, even packing up our things and meeting us a the airport with our bags when flight arrangements went awry. I look forward to our next trip.

My family and I stayed different days and we were ALWAYS welcomed with a big smile and service that You´ll never forget.
Rooms are very cozy with wooden floors. A tiny but nice garden with a painting on the wall and a nice tree ficos tree in the middle.
Breakfast is taken in a small dining hall with handwoven cloths on the tables.
Here at this hotel You´ll be met with a nice atmosphere and spirit. Go there and You will NOT be disappointed!

We are experienced mature travellers but we were mindful of Quito's reputation for crime. We were therefore delighted to discover Hotel Andino, very close to Mariscal Sucre (so called Gringoland) but not right in it. Altogether we spent 13 nights there, using it as a base for Quito and other travels. The hotel is small, the service is personal and very friendly, and the location couldn't be better. It's easy to get into the historic centre, but also to the airport and other interesting sites. It is really convenient for amenities - supermarket, ATM, laundry, restaurants, travel agents - many of which are in a more residential area and feel safer. The rooms were clean, well furnished and large (if cold!), the water in the shower was hot, the breakfast was the best we had in a month's visit to Ecuador, The only downside was that you could sometimes hear other guests coming and going, and there was a bell to gain access to the hotel which was pretty loud. However we would definitely stay there again on future visits to Quito,

I chose Andino initially for its location, close to both Mariscal and this historic city (I have stayed in Quito twice before). Staying with Miguel and Paola who are delightful hosts, has been a wonderful experience, they made me feel at home and nothing was too much trouble. My room was clean every day. The hotel is bright and cheerful. The staff are helpful and courteous. TV and wifi available. Breakfast was good. As a solo female traveller of mature years - I would recommend anyone to stay here.

I stayed at Hotel Andino with a girlfriend and used it as 'base camp' while acclimatizing and climbing some of the bigger peaks in the Quito area. We chose this hotel because of its location, a couple of blocks away from the noise and bustle of the Mariscal tourist area. We wanted to be near, but not in the busy area. No action here, it's quiet and quaint. We chose well and have no regrets. I can't wait to go back to Quito and will absolutely stay there again.

LOCATION:
Andino hotel is located on a very quiet street, police station at one end of the street and a Children's hospital at the other end. Right next to this hotel is the Polish Embassy. It's very safe and quiet and in a great little neighborhood. Having read way too many forum sites we were a little worried about our safety (two women) in Quito, but never once felt unsafe during our two-week stay. We walked everywhere in the Mariscal area both day and early evenings and only took taxis to get to/from the Pichincha gondola and the airport. Taxi to airport $6 from the hotel. If you want a driver to meet you at the airport, arrange it with Miguel. It'll cost you $10 and is absolutely worth it after a long, long flight. It was great to have the driver meet us at the airport, my name and the hotel name on a sign. No hassles, just excellent door to door service.

HOTEL:
The hotel is very quaint, it's like a large home and the owner Miguel and staff José helped us feel very very welcome and at home right from the start. We were in room 3, a 3 single-bed room on the main floor. It is bright, large, clean and has a large bathroom with walk in shower stall and hot water. We were spoiled, with that third bed in the room...it gave us more room to store our moutaineering equipment/backpacks/etc. There is a tv in the room, but we never used it. The room was cleaned and towels replaced daily. The furniture, while not new, is very functional and the beds were comfortable.

The reception area is a place where some of the few longer-term guests like to congregate for a chat with Miguel, José or other guests. Off the reception area is the breakfast area and a small garden that is very pretty in the morning sun. Walls in the public places are painted bright colors that will absolutely brighten your day.
If you stay long term (a couple of weeks or longer), ask for a preferential rate. You'll be pleasantly surprised.

Owner Miguel is well-known and highly respected in the area. Local businesses nearby knew him and spoke well of him. A true class-act, just like his staff. I hope you enjoy his recommendations about what to see, where to go, etc. are much as we did. Jose, a staff member, was also terrific, friendly and very helpful.

While our spoken Spanish is not great, we were able to converse with the staff and had a great time with them all. We met their children and spouses and it really felt like being at someones' home rather than a hotel. I like that a lot.

Breakfast in included in the package and typically consisted of plenty of coffee, fresh pressed fruit juice (which varied daily), fresh bread, jam, and eggs. A delicious way to start the day.

BANKING:
A few blocks away (3 minute walk) you'll find automated banking machines at the Swissotel (corner Cordero and 12October). There's also a bank a few minutes walk on 6th of Dec. street.

LAUNDRY:
Mr. Clean laudromat at the corner of 6December and Moreno. Wash/dry/fold your laundry for 50 cents/lb of clothing at this laudromat...drop it off in the morning and it's ready in the late afternoon. The lady is really sweet and does a great job.

FOOD:
We wanted to stay away from touristy restaurants. If you really must, there's a McDonalds on 6th of December street, about a 10 minute walk from the hotel and a KFC about a 5 minute walk in the opposite direction on the same street.

There is a great place for lunch called LA CASA DE VIVO located off of Luis Cordero, on the street between Toledo and Isabel La Catolica street. Walk uphill on Cordero and it's one block past Isabel LaCatolica, on a side street on the left. You'll see all the local business people crowding in a lunchtime. Delicious and huge lunch for $1.90-2.40.

Another good dinner option is the green colored restaurant located at the corner of Cordero and 6th of december. Dinner for about $3.00. Try the menestras or chicken.

Finally, one of our favorites for dinner was a little open bbq meat place on Colon, just behind the KFC chicken restaurant. Great menestras here too. Cheap and delicious!

Pastry shop off of Cordero near Reina Victoria is good too. It's right beside the little park, beside another police station. Fresh pastries and breads daily.

Food and grocery shop: There is a supermaxi where you can buy groceries and a ton of other stuff about a 8 minute walk from the hotel. It's on 12th of October/Madrid corner, some three blocks back and two blocks uphill from the Andino.

INTERNET AND ESPRESSO:
There are a bunch of internet cafes in the Mariscal area, but our favorite was the Papayanet, located at the corner of Jose Calama and Reina Victoria streets, about 10 minute walk from the hotel. We didn't bring a computer on our trip, so the internet cafes were appreciated.

OVERALL IMPRESSION:
I think you'll enjoy this hotel if you want a place to relax away from tourist traps and busy streets. It's two or three blocks from the craziness, but seems a world away. We loved it and really it recommend to you. Enjoy!

We booked two rooms which were clean and comfortable. We had cable TV and wireless internet. The hostel is close to the Mariscal district but, thankfully, not right in it. Jaime, Miguel and Paola are great hosts and go out of their way to make you feel welcome. Breakfast is good, too, and seconds were offered on everything!
