I visited San Jorge/Quito in late May-early June 2014, using it as a base for other excursions. The staff were all unfailingly courteous and helpful. Food was very good. I had two different rooms, both on the main level. Each room was comfortable, bathrooms worked just fine. I did not spend much time birding at San Jorge/Quito itself, but went up to Reserva Yanacocho one day with an excellent guide, Miguel. This is a beautiful reserve with great mountain views and many hummingbirds and other species.

Stayed at the Quito Lodge - did not see any hummingbirds there but took the magic bird circuit and the owner George brought us to the Tandapaya Lodge where there was a fantastic myriad of birds feeding from the bird feeders and bananas left on trees! George is a lovely man and very accommodating with plenty of experience of birds. The walk after was so-so... we didn't see any birds or animals at all but learnt about the different flora. Coming from Malaysia which is full of rainforests, we didn't see alot of trees that we hadn't seen already. I would recommend if trail walking in a forest isn't your thing - book to stay at the Tandapaya lodge and enjoy the hummingbirds while having breakfast without taking any of the tours!

This lodge is very close to Quito and a must for birdwatchers. The lodge itself is historic and the owner and his son run an excellent operation. All the San Jorge lodges are recomended. The views to the valley are beautiful and the trails perfect for birding. Rooms are nice and beds are comfortable. Do the Magic Birding Circuit!

We took a lovely day trip to San Jorge Hummingbird Lodge in the Cloud Forest an hour or so from Quito. George, the affable owner, himself picked us up at our hotel. The drive, once you are free of the astounding Quito traffic, was beautiful -- lots of breathtaking views. I doubt if you'll ever see more hummingbirds at one time in your life -- both around the feeders and in the wild. The trip is a bit on the expensive side, and perhaps you might consider spending one night at the Lodge -- I doubt it would cost very much more and it would be fun to go to sleep and to wake up amidst the birds

We had a delightful few days at the lodge. The room was very spacious and comfortable, the food good and the staff lovely, ready to meet our every need. Dr Cruz was fantastical knowledgeable about a huge number of subjects including of course the flora and fauna of of the area. His openness and warm hospitality made us feel very at home. A lovely trip.

Magic birding circuit is the perfect name for it was truly MAGICAL. The owner George greeted our group of six at the airport and off we went. The accommodations at the San Jorde Eco-Lodge & Botanical Reserve in Quito were nice, the scenery beautiful and the al fresco lunch among the humming birds amazing. The staff was friendly and accommodating. George’s expertise made finding birds enjoyable and easy. We spent the afternoon at Yanacocha with the spectacular Sword billed Hummingbird, Rainbow Bearded Thronbill and a host of others!

We headed to the Lodge at Tandayappa and enjoyed a picnic lunch before seeing the incredible Cock of the Rock. This lodge was more impressive than Quito. Again the staff wonderful and the food delicious. This is the hummingbird lodge and it did not disappoint.

Our last stop was the lodge at Milpe. The lodge is nestled among the beautiful and expansive forest canopy. The bungalows are well appointed. The views from the private balcony are extraordinary, just the place to relax in the hammock after a long day in the forest. The food again was awesome. The coffee served morning and afternoon was delicious, the hospitality wonderful.

Dr. George Cruz is an exceptional and very knowledgeable guide. He and his wife accommodated everyone’s needs at each of the lodges.

George thank you for a wonderful experience in Ecuador, I look forward to visiting with you at your next lodge in the very near future!

We started our vacation week at the highest elevation of the trip and loved the cool weather and great accommodations. The rooms were very nice and the spaceheater kept them comfortable at night. The meals were outstanding ( as they were the whole trip ) and the coffee was the best I've ever had.
The trip to Yanacocha was definitely the highlight of the stay there and the proximity made for an easy visit there. The hummingbirds were incredible.
