“If you love birds, why stay anywhere else in Quito?”
Reviewed 29 July 2014

Location! Location! Location! says it all. The view of Quito from the wooded hills of San Jorge Ecolodge is especially beautiful at night, and this 19th Century hacienda has been lovingly restored by the Cruz family. Typical Ecuadorian food is served in the onsite restaurant, and breakfast can be ready as early as 5 AM for those who want to get an early start on birding the old road to Mindo. Several kinds of montaine hummingbirds come to sugar-water feeders at the hacienda (my favorite was the sparkling violet-ear). I recommend you plan your birding trip to allow you to stay at at least two (and better, at all three) ecolodges (Quito, Tandayapa, and Milpe), for each is architecturally different and each has its unique suite of birds.

Room Tip: If you are just getting used to the 3000 m altitude at Quito, ask for a room at the lower lodge (nex...

Our stay at the San Jorge Eco-Lodge and Botanical Reserve couldn't have been more enjoyable. It is a beautiful spot, located above the noise and bustle of Quito, yet close enough to have easy access to the city. The staff is courteous, accommodating, and interesting to talk to. Dr. Cruz helped us arrange a fascinating birding circuit, which he led himself. He is a gracious host and we are sure knows every bird in all of the ecosystems of Ecuador, as well as most of the flora and fauna of those diverse places. He gave us a copy of his book on medicinal plants of Ecuador as well as the hummingbirds around the Quito area, and we will treasure those gifts. We will definitely be going back!

Room Tip: If the thin air is a problem, (Quito is at almost 10,000 feet), ask for a room on the ground level.

Our family recently took a once in a lifetime trip to Ecuador and the Galapagos. Visiting the Galapagos was certainly an unforgettable experience, we thought how can you top that? The trip to San Jorge Eco-Lodge & Botanical Reserve/Quito was equally wonderful. The Lodge is a lovely Spanish hacienda built during the last century in the hills above Quito (the altitude took a little getting used to!). The diversity of plants and birds in this location were amazing (as is the biodiversity at Jorge's two other resorts/lodges in Tandayapa and Milpe (well worth visiting at the same time). The best part of visiting this place is its owner Jorge, who is an outstanding naturalist, artist, and a great host. Jorge's family and staff made every effort to make our trip memorable and pleasant, and Jorge himself even led our group on several outstanding walks to look at medicinal plants, birds, and even arranged a lovely tour of the old city of Quito.
I would recommend this trip for anyone who has a passion for tropical ecology and luxurious ecotourism.

Room Tip: bring warm clothes! Even though this is Ecuador, the high elevation and rain forest guarantee cool w...

We spent a total of three nights here at the main lodge; two after our arrival in Quito and for our last night after returning from nights spent at the San Jorge lodges at Tandayapa and Milpe (please see my other reviews for those also excellent lodges). This lodge (the original one) is housed in an historical hacienda (18th Century) located in the hills overlooking sprawling Quito. It used to be conveniently close to the old airport, but now is about an hour's drive (depending on traffic) from the new airport. As you can see by other contributor's photos, it is rustic, albeit quaint and homey; the upper section has great views from the balconies, but we opted to stay in the original section to avoid the climb back up the newer rooms after meals. Speaking of which, all meals and accompanying service here were outstanding; we had trout the first night and it was delicious. Service is friendly, responsive, and attentive, without being obtrusive; and special kudos to Vincente, the workhorse. He is waiter, porter (deftly carrying 100 pounds of luggage up a steep path!), fire builder, driver, and anything else that needs doing with a smile.
During our entire trip package, the owner, Dr. Jorge Cruz, was our primary guide, driver, bird and orchid expert, trail guide, native medicinal plant expert, Ecuadoran history expert, and all-around good guy. What an enlightening trip we had; we can't recommend his services highly enough. We also had the pleasure of meeting all of Jorge's wonderful family for his birthday celebration at Milpe. Regardless of your interests/hobbies, Jorge and Cheryl can put together a comprehensive package to suit your needs. As soon as the San Jorge Cosango Eco-lodge is completed (2015?), we will be back to check it out!

Room Tip: We stayed in room "A" in the original building; very spacious and conveniently close to th...

My husband, 13yr old son, and I stayed at the Quito lodge. The room was very nice with plenty of bottled water, hot water, and electricity. We had a great time! Our first day was open and Dr. Cruz gave us a hiking map to some lovely waterfalls. We had great views of the city from above. Our second day we met Vincente by the hummingbird feeders and spent the next 11 hours birding. Amazing! Vincente was very knowledgeable and a great guide. We saw Lapwings, an Andean Condor, Owls, and so much more. The next day we left for the Galapagos. San Jorge Eco-Lodge helped us with all our airport transfers for a very reasonable price and totally hassle free. We spent a total of 2 weeks in Ecuador and San Jorge had the best food and quietest rooms. I highly reccommend San Jorge for families, serious birders, and anyone traveling in Ecuador.

San Jorge Eco-Lodge & Botanical is an absolute must for the nature lover, bird and orchid enthusiasts. All arrangements were pre-made by Cheryl including all transportation, meals, accommodation and guiding. I met Dr. Cruz (Jorge), the owner in Quito and we quickly became good friends with our interest in nature photography, and particularly my love of wild orchids. Ecuador has the largest number of species in the world and Jorge's piece of paradise does not disappoint. The accommodations are first class, clean, spacious and built for the naturalist - large 10' windows on three sides of a large room. The local meals were prepared with care and attention of a fine restaurant! Jorge and his guides are extremely knowledgable about all aspects of the cloud forests and the areas around both Tandayapa and Milpas lodges were quite different owing to their altitude. The vistas are absolutely stunning and ever day was an adventure with peace and tranquillity in the evenings. Hiking each day was fantastic with excellent trails that blend in very well with the forest and are well marked at every junction. They are graded in such a way that young and old alike can hike comfortably. Waterfalls in virgin cloud tropical forests are plentiful and the temperature is warm but not hot during the day and cooler in the evenings. If you love birds, you will so many species in such a short time. In one hour, I saw more types of hummingbirds than I have in my whole life!

At the end of my four days, I was driven at 0330 in the morning to catch my early flight back to Canada. Upon returning, I was met with a e-mail welcoming back home!. Service does not come any better than this.

Visit San Jorge Eco-Lodge - you won't be disappointed!!

Room Tip: They are all excellent with fantastic views

I visited San Jorge/Quito in late May-early June 2014, using it as a base for other excursions. The staff were all unfailingly courteous and helpful. Food was very good. I had two different rooms, both on the main level. Each room was comfortable, bathrooms worked just fine. I did not spend much time birding at San Jorge/Quito itself, but went up to Reserva Yanacocho one day with an excellent guide, Miguel. This is a beautiful reserve with great mountain views and many hummingbirds and other species.
