We visited this lodge as a part of a birding trip that took us to three San Jorge Eco-Lodges (Quito, Tandayapa, Milpe). We did not stay long at this lodge, as the weather did not cooperate the first two days. Our plane, scheduled to land 11PM was not able to land because of the rain and fog at the airport. We had to land in Guayaquil (about 45 minutes away) to get gas. By the time we got back to Quito, the airport was open and we landed around 3AM. We were very pleased that the people from the hotel were still waiting for us. This was a good thing, as the lodge is difficult to find in the night. Our room was clean, comfortable and charming. As it was already fairly cold outside, it was nice to find a space heater in the room set to a comfortable temperature. We had an early breakfast (6:30AM), which consisted of fresh fruit, coffee, fruit juice and an omelet. It was all served in an charming restaurant. Since it was still raining we did not see much of the grounds, but it looked like a good choice for nature lovers. In general, Dr. Jorge and his crew were extremely helpful. They make you feel safe and comfortable everywhere you go. They are great ambassadors for Ecuador. This is certainly not the most luxurious hotel in Quito, but it is charming, interesting and you cannot beat the service. That starts with the online reservation, which was fast and helpful. This place is great for nature lovers. As it is in the hills, some walking up and down is necessary, but unless you are physically handicapped this is not a big deal. Don't be concerned about your luggage, the staff will bring it to your room.
If you are a business traveler, who needs to be most of the time downtown Quito, then there are several places that are more centrally located than this lodge. We found Casa Aliso to be a good choice.

I registered with Trip Advisor just so I could share my experience about Hosteria San Jorge. I traveled with a group of Fulbright Scholars all over Ecuador during the month of June, and we spent our last week with Dr. Cruz at his ecolodges. We were a large diverse group of college students and high school teachers, and we could hardly agree on anything, but still we all agreed that Hosteria San Jorge was the perfect place for us to conclude our trip. All three ecolodges were populated by an incredible array of birds and butterflies who were not at all camera shy, and each ecolodge was placed delicately in the midst of a specific climate zone, so we saw many kinds of landscapes and plants over just a few days.
On one of our last days, we did horseback riding. It was absolutely amazing! I recommend the horseback riding, hands down. There were 12 of us on horseback and we were all very impressed with our horses and their equipment. The horses were very well behaved and responded well to the riders. There were two guides with us on horseback - on in the front, one in the rear, giving advice for how we should lead our horses. There were many points when we had space for our horses to run, and that is the closest I've ever felt to flying. It was my first time riding horseback, but now I definately want to do it again. And the food! it was heaven in a bowl and a plate. Dr. Cruz's beautiful wife is a chef, and she and the kitchen staff serve up elegant three or four course meals, with soups, meats, deliciously cooked veggies, plus vegetarian options, and different desserts every night.
Dr. Cruz finds every way he can to emply the local community because involving the community is such an important part of sustainable development. All of the people who work with him seem happy and have stayed with him for a long time. There never seems to be a feeling of animosity between people working there. During happy hour, I played my guitar and Dr. Cruz sang with me and my group. He is a walking encyclopedia, but he also knows how to let loose and host a great party. Also, he knows many languages and can guide visitors from all the world. His passion and excitement are contagious to people of all ages and interests. If you are going to be visiting Ecuador, you must make your way to Hosteria San Jorge!

Continental airlines had a weekend special that we took advantage of, and let San Jorge do the rest. From our arrival to our departure, we were taken care of in a very professional manner. Even though our plane was delayed and it was late Saturday evening, our driver-Jose-met us with a smile. He even stopped on the way up to our lodge to let us take pictures of the city at night. The first morning, I was greeted with coffee and steamed milk. Our ctity tour of Quito was SUPER, and our tour of the other lodge--San Jorge de Tandayapa was spectacular with an excellent lunch and hummingbird feeders with fantastic birds all over. Our guide, Jorge, was amazing. San Jorge Eco-Lodge knows how to pamper customers.

My wife and I made all of our arrangements for a 15 day Magic Circuit of Birding Trip, through the good services of their U.S. Agent, Cheryl Korowotny, who was most helpful.
We spent a total of 7 days at the San Jorge Quito Eco-lodge. Our room was in the fascinating, historical, main building. It was large and comfortable with a huge bathroom and lots of instant, hot water and plenty of towels. Due to the high altitude (about 10,000ft) the evenings can be cool after sundown. So, it was always a pleasure to return to a blazing wood-fire in the room's attractive stone-fireplace, prepared by Vincente. It was only steps away from the dining room, where we enjoyed delightful, Ecuadorian, gourmet meals. Plentiful hot breakfasts, delicious and varied soups at both lunch and dinner, beautifully presented entrees and scrumptious desserts, accompanied by fresh, fruit juices of all kinds. More than enough to keep our strength up for the somewhat, strenuous, mountain-trails around the lodge. The hosts, Dr.George Cruz and his wife Irina (she manages the kitchens), Jose, the manager and Vincente, the waiter, all work very hard to ensure the comfort and satisfaction of the guests.
With regard to the reason for our visit - Birding - the well-groomed trails throughout the varied habitat at different elevations, together with strategically located, bird-feeders around the lodge, provide plenty of opportunity for great birding. You will not find a better, more bird-savvy, bird-guide anywhere (and I do mean ANYWHERE) than Dr. George. He is also a most knowledgeable botanist and a scholar of history, be it of San Jorge, or Quito, or Ecuador. Also a gifted artist, examples of his talent adorn the walls of the lodge, from beautiful paintings of birds to colourful, wall murals. All of which subscribe to his being quite a raconteur. We would recommend that prospective guests take high altitude medication, to ensure the full enjoyment of this wonderful eco-lodge, as we, active seniors in our late 70s, did in every aspect it has to offer.

Before beginning a great trip to the Galapagos, my husband & I spent two nights at the San Jorge eco-lodge. We are novice birders but easily added 100 birds to our life list. Our guide and host was Dr. Jorge ( a vet, entrepreneur, bird guide, hotelier, environmentalist and great ambassador for his country). Jorge, his wife and his son showed us a wonderful time in just two days.
Room is comfortable not luxurious...view was great.
Every staff member accommodating. Communication easy.
Beware, walking is strenuous and the food is adequate but not great.

Jorge, owner, guide, host, teacher, environmentalist, is a fine naturalist with extensive knowledge of flora and fauna, especially birds, of course. He's a guy who loves where he is and what he does and equally loves to teach and talk about it. We stayed in three of his facilities, each at a quite different elevation, mainly to see birds, and it was a richly rewarding experience.

I have traveled on over 30 bird watching tours with professional tour companies and the Magic Birding Circuit tour was one of my best ever. Dr Jorge's son, Jorge, is one of the best guides I have ever been with...and he is only 21-years old.
I stayed at there three different lodges, and a hotel in Baeza, during my tour. The birding was amazing, over 300 species including 44 species of hummingbirds and 54 species of tanangers.
The lodges were great, the food plentiful and delicious, and all of the staff were friendly and helpful.
