“Can I Move in?”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 September 2013 for a stay in August 2013

I don't even know where to begin describing the perfection that is Wantara. It is an oasis in the middle of a crowded city, a place to find peace and relax when everywhere else around you the streets are crowded. My boyfriend and I stayed here in August and September of 2013. I was traveling alone for the first time until my boyfriend could meet me a day later. Wolfgang arranged transportation from the airport, and it was a huge relief to come out of customs and find Jaime waiting with a smile. He knew everything there was to know about Quito and Ecuador, and I very much enjoyed talking with him about the oil drilling in Yasuni as well as volcanos and things we should do while in Quito. When we arrived at Wantara it was late so i didn't look around much, but the next day I was thrilled to find that Wolfgang and Andi had left a plate of bread and cheese in the fridge so I didn't need to go get breakfast for myself (they also left us a beer, but that wasn't for breakfast). They also stock the kitchen with oil, spices, coffee, and tea. There is a safe in the suite which was big enough for all of cameras, passports, wallets, etc. The Luna suite itself was amazing. I love the look of the adobe and dark wood, it was very charming. Everything is very clean. They offer laundry service here which we used a few times. The garden outside was beautiful and I enjoyed watching the urban birds and the occasional hummingbird throughout our stay. There is a little herb garden, i regularly took a few mint leaves to make cup of tea during my stay. They have a coy and funny little cat who I spent a lot of time with. The set up of the place was great. As other reviewers have mentioned, you can hang out with other travelers or by yourself. We were able to learn and share a lot of information about Quito and what to do from the people we met in the courtyard. Wolfgang and Andi know everything about the city, and we got excellent recommendations on where to get food, how to get around, what to see, what is safe, how to communicate, etc from them. They are very kind people and very willing to sit down to have coffee with you in the morning or just chat about what you've been up to in the city and where you plan to go next. They also do everything they can to make your stay easier for you. For example, the location of Wantara is difficult to find, even for taxi drivers who know the city. Wantara has business cards to take with you with a close in map of the area to show to drivers or help find your way. These saved us quite a few times when we took taxis, and the times that we didn't take the cards with us we ended up doing circles or just getting out and walking.

The location of Wantara is beyond perfect. It is located five minutes walk from La Ronda, where you find the traditional Ecuadorian music, drinks, and nightlife that we came to love. It is ten to 15 minutes walk to Santa Domingo, 20-30 to Plaza Grande, and just two minutes walk from the green trolleybus line. There is market down the street where we got rice and plantains and just up the street we got bread at the panderia.

In short, if I could move into Wantara, I would do it in a breath. The rates were so, so cheap for everything Wantara has to offer. We are looking forward to returning here in the near future. Thank you so much Wolfgang and Andi for your hospitality!

“Could not ask for a better place...”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 September 2013 for a stay in August 2013

We stayed in the "Sol" suite for eight days in August. From the time that we entered the complex we felt as if we were in a different world. The grounds are impeccably manicured and the suite itself leaves nothing to be desired. It is a world within itself. The views from the suite are incredible and the suite is extremely functional and comfortable. The location is great within historic Quito offering many places to see within walking distance. The owners, Andi and Wolfgang, are amiable, helpful and gracious hosts who are there to help and answer any questions and give advice. Truly a great place to stay in Quito. Again, congratulations Andi and Wolfgang on a wonderful place. It was truly appreciated.

I'm a nomadic traveller, I've stayed in countless properties in 17 countries and counting. Wantara Suites is simply one of the best.

Andi and Wolfgang are gracious, delightful hosts. The property is like a magical secret garden, and the suites are zen-like, peaceful and comfortable. The kitchens are well-equipped, the showers are hot, the comforters and pillows are fluffy. Small shops and bakeries selling everything you need surround the property, and it's an easy walk to Plaza Grande for the Sunday festivities, to La Ronda for Friday night dinners, or to the trolebus to get anywhere in the city for a quarter. I've stayed twice now and hope to return someday.

Andi is an artist who has lovingly restored this property and garden, and Wolfgang is a former tour company operator who knows the Quito area and excursions and can advise you on any aspect of your stay. They are both charming, available, and multilingual.

Liked best: The serenity and overall feel of the property
Liked least: Nights can be chilly. Plenty of wood is provided for your stove, but if you forget to bring some down, you will be chilly at night!

“Excellent experience at Wantara!”

We just returned from a month-long stay at Wantara – we were in the Estrella Suite.

We weren’t necessarily the typical traveling group – in addition to staying for a full month, we also brought two kids. Here are our thoughts on the rental:

· Everything that was in the control of Andi and Wolfgang was phenomenal. The suite was gorgeous, the garden area amazing (and totally welcoming for a game of catch or resting on a hammock), and the shower was always hot (WITH water pressure too…).

· Andi and Wolfgang were always around to help if needed. We had a major internet issue (unrelated to the suites, it was an issue with the internet company) and Wolfgang did everything he could to help remediate the issue. Wolfgang also helped coordinate taxis whenever we needed them.

· The location is fantastic – as another reviewer pointed out, it is a ‘hidden gem’. The view from the street isn’t much to photograph (though we always felt safe) but inside the gate is another story… the layout of the garden gives everyone plenty of their own space (we had our own porch with a great view) as well as common areas. It is much quieter than many other areas in Quito (there is less street noise here given the location and the setup of the apartments and there aren’t as many barking dogs – we didn’t have any problems sleeping).

· More points on the location – since we were travelling around the city quite a bit, it was great to be so close to public transportation. We would just walk over to Cumanda every day and hop on the Trole. Whenever we needed supplies/groceries, we would just walk to the corner stores or down to the big grocery store in Old Town – we could get absolutely everything we needed within 10 minutes of the apartment – groceries, fresh bread, fresh fruit, local food from the lady down the hill, someone to sew patches on the kids’ clothes, ice cream…. Can’t think of anything we couldn’t find!

· Proximity to Old Town – we loved being so close to Old Town. When we weren’t sure what to do for the day, we would just make our way over to Old Town (walking – all safe streets during the day and easy to find). We found live music every single weekend – even a parade and dance performances on some days. Tons of churches are open and free so even without a plan (or with kids who have short attention spans…) there is a ton to see.

· Traveling with kids makes having a full kitchen very high on the priority list – the kitchen in the suite was fully-equipped and we could do everything we needed to feed hungry kids. As is typical in Ecuador, the fridge is small but there is tons of counter/drawer space.

“Convenient and Charming”

For those who are looking for a relaxing home base. Conveniently located in historic Quito. Many of Quito's landmarks are within walking distance. Plus, the facilities and sites are top notch for the price. Beautiful rooms and landscaping makes it hard to leave.

Our stay was perfect. The owners Andie and Wolfgang have carved a piece of heaven out of the city of Quito. Andie has the warmth of a great hostess, and the eye of an artist. Everything one could want - gardens, romantic surroundings, cozy fireplace, luxury bedding - nothing has been overlooked. If you are going to Quito you HAVE to stay here. It will surprise you, again and again. Plus the price is more than reasonable. We loved it!

“An oasis in the heart of historic Quito”

What a lovely place in the heart of Quito. The units are comfortable and complete with everything one could need for a short or long stay. We stayed four weeks and wished we could have stayed longer. Andi and Wolfgang are wonderful hosts and we treasure our time at Wantera. We are already looking forward to our next visit here.
