“Why Can't All Hotels be Like This?”
Reviewed 12 May 2014

What I Liked Most: The terrace with a view over the square; the view of the hotel from the square; the food
What I Liked Least: No gym.

Stayed here for a couple of days. It's in one of the lovely squares, and has a terrace on the 3rd floor overlooking the square: a superb place from which to take photos. The room was a decent size and nicely furnished. Soon after arrival we went downstairs for the included afternoon tea. Very good it was too.

We had dinner here one of the nights. The food is great, and you should come here for dinner even if you're not staying. Breakfast was a match for the dinner.

There is no gym, but they do have an arrangement to use the Marriott's gym, which is 20 minutes away. It's not bad but does not have good exercise bikes.

The wifi was fast, and unusually, there was no cumbersome and inane sign-in process. Why can't other hotels do this?

Difficult to fault.

Booked to stay in another Quito hotel for 2 nights, on the day of our arrival (my birthday) we were upgraded at no extra cost to the Casa Gangotena because the original hotel had some overstaying guests. Lucky us, because Casa Gangotena is undoubtedly a world-class hotel in a great location in central Quito. Our rooms didn't overlook the square, (not surprisingly for such a last-minute booking) but were otherwise pretty much all you could want - very luxurious with particularly good bathrooms. Just one comment: another reviewer mentions the lack of a minibar- I don't mind that, but would have liked some tea/coffee making facilities. I know there is (no doubt very good) room service, but I don't always feel like facing a member of staff first thing in the morning! As for dining, the breakfasts were good, the complimentary afternoon tea is a nice touch and the beautiful birthday cake I found in my room on returning at the end of the first evening was greatly appreciated. It was also the only place in Ecuador to produce a cup of tea deemed acceptable by my travelling companion! The view from the rooftop terrace of San Francisco Square is lovely - shame the hotel does not capitalise on this more by installing a rooftop bar. The staff were very unstuffy and friendly and we were impressed by the way the concierge always remembered our names. All in all, I would return even if I had to pay the full price next time.

There is a reason, or many reasons, why this is a top-rated, world-class hotel. It is architecturally stunning and the service cannot be beat. It is so nice to stay in a place where the windows open. My husband and I used Casa Gangotena as the staging platform for our trip to Galapagos and the Amazon jungle. We stayed at three points in our trip, leaving our extra luggage while we were gone. All of the staff were excellent and did their very best to serve us and help us out. In fact, since our flight back home left at midnight and we had a noon checkout time, they let us stay an extra 9 hours without charge until our departure to the airport. We had wonderful food, including a huge breakfast buffet with optional cooked eggs, high tea in the afternoon, and a tray of pastries with the evening turn-down. Dinner in the restaurant provided an opportunity to try Ecuadorean inspired dishes. Also, there was a tray of fruit in the room with an explanation of the local products. Our early-morning departure on one day included a mini-buffet in the lobby plus a boxed breakfast to go. The concierge and reception manager were very helpful in getting us a private driver, dinner reservations, and a map with the "must -see" spots in Colonial Quito. They always made us feel welcome (three times) despite our casual, travel-beaten attire. Is there any way on Trip Advisor to rate super-excellent?

Room Tip: We asked for a room at the back on the hotel since the front of the hotel faces a large plaza.

Fabulous hotel - gorgeous, clean and spectacular. The room was clean and gorgeous, we had our own private balcony. It was spectacular. The restaurant was okay - probably would recommend going elsewhere, but the tea in the lobby was yummy and fun!

Between 3rd and 14th March my wife and I stayed at the Casa Gangotena and La Mirage lodges at Santa Cruz and Isabela. They were all excellent. The staff at Gangotena were first rate. The hotel setting overlooking the plaza, good breakfast spread, and afternoon tea, all overwhelmed us. During the period at Quito we had daily outings with our guide Gustavo Cabezas and driver Sylvanna from Terrandes, to various haciendas, including the Angustino de Callo, volcanos craters. All the people in Ecuador really made great effort to make foreign visitor feel at home.

Room Tip: Room with a view of the Plaza

Beautiful hotel with a service level that must make every other hotel jealous. Room, hostmanship, friendliness it was all above my already high expectations. Breakfast buffet was the best i have ever had the pleasure to join in. Only the restaurant staff which was ok instead of excellent, makes it not fully perfect, but overall they are very close!

We spent 2 nights here en route to The Galapagos Islands. From the moment you arrive till the moment you leave, this hotel is amazing in all areas, beautiful rooms, decoration and furnishings. Polite and very helpful staff. Delicious food, including a must have afternoon tea. You really do not want to leave.
