My partner and I stayed here for several days on a trip to Ecuador, which included Quito and the Galapagos. The hotel is perfectly located in the old city just down the street from the Plaza San Francisco. The place is family run and the hotel is actually a very old three story family home, which has been kept much like it was for previous generations of the family, with a several bedrooms on two floors surrounding a covered courtyard, a Catholic shrine for prayer, a dining room and several living rooms. The first floor houses a restaurant where a basic breakfast of rolls, butter and jam, fruit, eggs, juice, coffee or tea is served starting at 7am. I also ate there twice for dinner and would recommend it for simple, home cooking. The rooms are large and simply furnished and there is free wifi in the common areas of the hotel.
What makes this place different than others like it is the warmth and generosity of the family. I arrived late at night and one son Bernardo showed me around the place, his mom put out fruit and rolls for us when we left for the Galapagos before dawn last week, and this morning when a credit card snafu kept me from paying with Visa or Amex, another son, Caetano, just said to pay with whatever cash I had left, which wasn't the full amount, haggled with a taxi driver to get me to the airport on time, and then handed me a big block of chocolate from his mother as a parting gesture.
Haven't been in many places in my travels where I was treated so kindly.
So, perfect location, simple but lovely setting, and wonderful owners make this place ideal for those who want a low key but memorable time in Quito.

I stayed here with my fellow top reviewer "Mexdoc" for three nights and we loved it. The location could not be better, the family that runs it is very kind and they all speak good English (if you don't speak the national tongue, which you should). The pictures you tend to see are of the "public spaces" and they are quite nice, as this was the home of the great-uncle and a lovely old place it is, complete with an 18th century deed which is framed in the dining room. Now, at less than 70 dollars a night, please don't expect flat-screen TVs, 800 count sheets or other luxury items. There is good (solar) hot water, excellent breakfast and a very pleasant ambience. As it is located in a small alley, and real people also live there, yes there are noises: roosters, kids, life in general. So, if you can "take" this kind of real experience, I think you will enjoy the hotel very much. Whatever you do, please don't stay in Mariscal Sucre, an entirely non-descript and rather run-down place, from which you wil have to take a taxi to go downtown (or the trolley). In M. Sucre, we did enjoy the botanical gardens but that was about it....

Room Tip: If you don't want noise, pick an interior room. We were in number nine -- right by the office...

What a great little hotel in the midst of the old city. We spent a total of 8 nights here as we were in and out of Quito over the 6 weeks we spent in Ecuador. By the end, we felt like part of the family.

The airlines lost my luggage for 3 days and numerous times every day Bernardo called them to track it down. Bernardo and the staff were all extremely pleasant and did everything they could to be helpful and make us feel comfortable..

We ate a number of meals at the small restaurant in the evenings. There isn't a large selection, but the food was always tasty and they used a number of organic products. The free tea / coffee service was a nice touch. After a day of sightseeing it was great to be able to return for tea, relaxation, and conversation.

Highly recommend staying here.

Room Tip: rooms away from the street are quieter at night

The top floor room was small but adequate. It had a outside facing window which generated some loud morning noise from the courtyard below, chickens cockadoodledooing next door and street peddlers. However, you do have to expect noise in Quito.

The house itself is gorgeously qaint, the breakfast is great by Quito standards and best of all, the staff are very helpful and will assist you in whatever you need.

This place is great value for money and it is well worth the small amount extra to move from the Hotel San Francisco to here!

Highly recommended!

Bernardo & Jan were fabulous in making us feel at home in a truly wonderful setting. Their warmth and hospitality are second to none! When you walk into the atrium area, you are immediately transformed into a relaxing environment and right in the center of the old city - simply lovely!

Hotel Boutique Portal de Cantuna is more than a hotel - it's a bit of a museum itself. The old dining room, living room, chapel and common areas are beautiful and fun to spend time in. There's also a lot of curios and antiques in the common areas. The location is excellent - right on Plaza San Francisco. Our taxi had some trouble finding it, so that is the landmark, plus that it is pretty much next to the luxury Casa Gangotena. We had a large and comfortable four-bedder. We got a tour of the hotel as well as excellent recommendations for places to visit and restaurants. We had dinner at the restaurant downstairs, which was a bit pricey, but very good. Breakfast was also large and excellent. We would recommend this hotel for the product, the service and the location.
