A great little hotel with a huge amount of character, after a long flight from London and traffic jam of a cab ride this was a very welcome sight. The staff were very helpful and accommodating organising a taxi and early breakfast when we left. The small restaurant was very nice with a great breakfast. Beautiful common areas to relax in, wifi ok in common areas. A pleasant welcome to Ecuador.

Room Tip: Rooms on the upper floor may be a little quieter.

This hotel was very conveniently located in the Centro Historico and allowed easy walking access to the area's points of interest. The hotel was unique and artistic with beautiful pieces of art made by a friend of the manager's son. The courtyard in the center of the hotel offered a relaxing spot to rest. The breakfast was included and substantial. The staff were very friendly and helpful. And the rooms are large and clean. Wifi is available in the common area. You will get a real taste for Quito at this location. I found it to be very safe, too.

Room Tip: The street noise was a little loud in the morning, but you'll want to wake up and enjoy the area...

Super cute hotel with a historic background! The price was perfect and the staff were amazing! We traveled with our 3 year old daughter and another couple with a small child and felt very welcomed and at home. The place was super clean and the hot water was plentiful! The location of the hotel is perfectly situated in old town Quito. After walking all day at such high elevation, it was nice to come "home". I absolutely can't say enough good things about this hotel! Amazing place! When we return to Quito with my family, we will stay here again. I also got a massage while I was there... One hour $30! It was great for the price!

Its a nice small hotel. Very clean. Has the old world feel. On the side street from the church San Francisco. Great place to start your walking tour of the city. The staff is family run and they are very helpful in giving directions and helping make arrangements. They aso have a nice Resturant
Which the food was good. Reasonable in price.

We checked in at night after flying in from the Galapagos. Bernardo walked us around the hotel and explained how he is the 4th generation to run the property which is a converted convent (the next day, a priest visiting from America asked to see the statue of Mary located in a separate room) next to the sitting room containing original antique furnishings purchased/commissioned by Bernardo's grandparents. Another "dining room" serves as the tea/coffee room.

We had a lot of luggage so the staff helped us with the bags up three flights of stairs. We stayed in rooms 10 and 13 on the opposite ends of the upper level. Room 10 contained a small sitting area and was next to the outside smoking area/jacuzzi. Room 13 is much brighter and faces the alley/courtyard. Wifi was not always "up".

We were quite tired and decided to dine in the restaurant on the ground level (which is also the location for breakfast). One of the chefs was also the server and she was extremely polite. The entrees cost approx $12-$16 and were quite tasty. They were accompanied by either vegetables, quinoa risotto, potatoes - we tried the risotto recommended by the chef - it was nothing like we ever had but quite good. At the end of the meal, we each received a complimentary shotglass of warm "canelazo" which is rimmed with sugar and tasted like a sweet rum.

Breakfast starts at 7 am. Just grab a table which is already pre-set with a basked of bread, a banana, butter and marmalade/jam. Juice, coffee and tea are at the bar which is self serve. A waitress will stop by and ask if you want eggs (sunny side up, scrambled, omelet style).

There were some nights when it was louder than usual (we stayed for 3 nights) due to other guest conversations or people walking by but once everyone went to bed, it was very quiet unless the shower in the bathroom next door is in use. This is to be expected in older buildings that have been converted to hotels. Not a big deal for us.

There are some shops a few blocks away that fried up fresh plantain (chifles) and potato chips. For us who missed our junk food, this was a treat. Note that many of the neighboring small grocery stores, shops and snack places close at night (as we discovered when we returned to the hotel after dinner) so pick up your drinks before it gets dark.

If we return to Quito, we would definitely stay here again given the location, price and friendly service.

Quito has become a humongous city! It is imperative to stay in a pleasant or convenient area or else!!! If a tourist, the colonial area is where you should be unless your interests specifically need you to be elsewhere.

Quito is very high elevation and there is a good chance your coming from a much lower elevation. The city is built on hills, and streets can be steep with cobblestones. SO walking is going to be much harder than you think. SO you should be pretty much in the center of the Historic District or you will definately regret it! You should pick a place near Plaza San Francisco or Plaza Grande, where the Presidencia is. These are about 3 blocks from each other. Be IN THIS AREA or you will regret it. This hotel is right off Plaza San Francisco, so location is very good.

The hotel is reached by a passageway off the street, so look for the blue awning and then walk under it into the passageway. It is an old wooden building nicely kept up. The restaurant is outside and to your right about 5 steps. So if you arrive late at night they have a night guy who will let you in and you can go down there, outside and to your right to find breakfast after 0700.

Noises carry in these old buildings. Ecuador is full of noises no matter where you stay. If your a light sleeper bring ear plugs that are good! I use the silicone ones from Target as the foam ones don't do much.

The hotel is family owned and run and is a very good option in Quito. They will take good care of you!

We stayed in Quito for three nights, just to see the Old Town. Portal de Cantuna offered a real sensory experience of staying in a colonial house with a courtyard, 200-year-old furnishings, and amazing architectural detail. Our first floor room sat right off the courtyard with a window over the entrance. The small bathrooms in some of the rooms attest to the reconstruction necessary to convert the once family home and prior convent into a hotel, but we had hot showers and comfortable beds. Breakfast included fruit, juice, rolls, and eggs served in the restaurant downstairs. The restaurant also opens for dinner, with a small, but excellent menu. We could walk to all the churches and sights in Old Town, and the hotel added the colonial ambiance to go with the experience.
