Everything about this trip awesome with one exception. The GPS's they give are a great idea however, they are programmed in such a way that you have to hit every way point to get to your final destination. This caused a lot of grief because we did not want to see every little waypoint so we spent a lot of time getting lost trying to get to our final destination. There is not enough time in the day to hit every way point anyway. My recommendation is that you use their general route but do your research up front and program in your own destinations.

The accommodations were fantastic. Each place had 5 star hospitality and food was always great. The bikes were in great condition although my buddy did lose his topbox and that set us back a couple of hours trying to re-secure it with rope we found from a near by auto shop. I would recommend not using a topbox as some of the dirt roads were very bumpy. Use a waterproof duffle next time.

The crew at the shop were great. They seem to enjoy there work and we had a great report with them right away. The dirt deluxe seemed expensive at first but for what we got I think it was a great deal!

cant wait to do it again.

Hi Paul

Thank you for this review! We're glad you enjoyed your trip and that you were impressed with the quality of our bikes and the route and selection of accommodations for this trip.

We are always happy and available to provide custom routes for our customers when they request them. If we had known that you and your group did not want to ride on dirt roads, we would have been happy to provide you with alternative daily routes. We've had hundreds of customers ride this route in its entirety each day, hitting each point of interest along the way and have really enjoyed it. I invite readers of this to see other reviews of our Dirt Deluxe Tour and see that it is not only possible, but a rewarding and memorable experience. But, as you alluded to, all of our guided tours require active participation, and an ability to follow and understand a route.

We use the latest and most advanced motorcycle GPS units on the market - Garmin zümo - with maps that we constantly keep up-to-date. These allow us to put you on small backroads with little traffic. The goal is to get you to beautiful places that are far off the beaten track. Its too bad you didn't see the whole route or you would better understand why we have the tour designed as it is. The zümo have a feature to allow you to easily skip waypoints along the way and for some people its a snap to understand. Others are a little bit "technically challenged" and find operating a GPS difficult. But that is why we offer a traditional guided tour as well.

Regarding our Hepco & Becker Gobi topbox - they are designed to take a maximum weight of 6 kg or about 12 pounds. If they are loaded with 40 pounds of gear, they can fall off on rough terrain. There are warning stickers on the top boxes and if you want to ignore them, what will happen is what happened! There is not much we can do!

Thank you again for the excellent review. We hope to see you again on another tour!

Just finished the 6 Day Dirt Deluxe Self Guided Tour. It was amazing. There were three of us, two on Honda Africa Twin bikes and I rode a BMW GS700. The machines worked great, no issues. A minor problem with a top case, which some rope fixed quickly.

The bikes were well maintained. Andy & Sylvain did a fantastic job of showing us the features of the bikes and making sure we were comfortable operating them. Cort did a great job outlining the route we would take and adding notes to the printed itinerary.

The biggest problem we had was using the GPS. I use a Garmin GPS at home when I ride (and need directions). The route is well defined, but navigating to the dozen to two dozen waypoints everyday can be a bit challenging. Take Cort's advice and trust the GPS. Even when it can't "find a route" drive a few meters down the road and it will figure it out. I also found that reloading the day's route or if all else fails, turn the GPS off and back on it and will find a route to the waypoint.

Between Cort spending well over an hour with us going over each day's route on a map in the office, the printed itinerary and the GPS we got around Ecuador well. Cort also provided extremely good advice on Ecuadorian road customs which allowed us to ride in traffic with confidence.

The hotels each night are deluxe. Each night has a different type resort: bird sanctuary, monastery, stables, spa. Each was different but well run, clean, and plenty of great food.

I'm already figuring out how I can do another trip.

Thank Steve T

Hi Steve - thank you very much for this excellent review and constructive advice for those riding our self-guided tours. We've put a ton of research, experience and preparation into these tours and our aim is to make it as easy as possible to enjoy an adventure packed with amazing experiences that people can do on their own. The routes we use involve taking small backroads and going to places that are "off the beaten track." To accomplish this we have invested heavily in the latest GPS navigation technology from the world's leading GPS manufacturer, Garmin.

THe latest Garmin zumo GPS units are packed with features and can be a bit confusing for some people to operate. Unfortunately they lack a feature that will reach out and shake you on the shoulder if you are not paying attention to it. If you don't follow its instructions, it will try to compensate and take you on different route than what we designed. This is why, during our briefing, we explain that you should review the day's route while having breakfast in the morning to be familiar with it before heading out on the road so that nothing catches you by surprise and so that you can follow the route more easily. One morning you started hy turning left out of a lodge instead of right, not paying attention to the GPS. That sent you on a different route than described and could have been avoided with a little more careful attention. We took the same GPS units provided to you and gave them to two riders currently riding the same route this week. We have been following them using our GPS tracking devices and see that they have not made a single wrong turn yet. So, the problems are really more on the way the GPS are used. I believe that when you come back to ride, this will be much easier for you.

Again, thank you for the excellent review. We find it extremely satisfying to know that our customers have an excellent experience and we look forward to seeing you again in the future!

These guys rock !!
I was traveling solo in Quito and got the urge to rent a bike and do a bit of riding in the mountains around Quito . Ran some research on the net and made my way to EFBR.

I could not have made a better choice. These guys are super professional and friendly and really know what they are doing. The setup is fab and fully equipped.

I did a 2 day rental without the tour and they went above and beyond in service even mapping out a few routes on the GPS ( which was not supposed to be included ), and guided me on some great roads to ride.

Andy & Sylvain went out of their way to make me comfortable and get me equipped ( it was my first time renting and riding solo like this )

I had a great time , the machine was in great condition and ran faultlessly in all weather conditions and I had an amazing 2 days thanks to these guys.

I hope to be able to return with some friends some days and do a longer tour.
