“Lovely guesthouse in safe neighbourhood”
Reviewed 15 June 2014

We stayed in Casa de la Gringa for 3 nights. We were picked up from the airport by Felipe, the family's son. The trip from the new airport is about 50 km (30 dollar one way). We had a room with two large beds and private bath (just opposite to the room, short walk through the garden. It can get very cold in Quito at night, but sufficient blankets are provided! Annie and Fausto are the lovely owners. Annie speaks English, Fausto doesn't. Both help you in learning some Spanish and prepare great food (about 4 dollar per person for a meal). Free wifi and drinking water.

The casa is located in the neighbourhood Floresta (near the Floresta church) and is quite close to the Mariscal (new town centre). A taxi to the old centre costs 2 or 3 dollars.

Room Tip: Room at the back is very quiet.

My husband and I stayed with Annie and Fausto for two nights while on route to the Galapagos. We were immediately welcomed with tea and fresh croissants after a long flight and our hosts were just so friendly and lovely, interested in our trip and our lives! Yes they do have dogs, but they are very friendly and sweet and we loved having them around as dog lovers ourselves. We were put in an immaculately clean double room with on suite bathroom and excellent wifi connection, very comfortable large bed and clean towels. This is a home stay, not a hotel and we have spent two months travelling in South America and have not felt as welcome or comfortable as we did in Casa De La Gringa. Yes you have to check with guests to have a shower (this is someone's home and the water has to be shared after all) but it's not a big deal and there was plenty of hot water. Annie made a fabulous breakfast with fresh fruits, cereals, coffee and tea every morning and my husband and I really felt like part of the family. If we ever are lucky enough to come back to Ecuador we would stay with them in a heartbeat. This is true Ecuadorean hospitality at its best. Five stars! Thank you Casa de la Gringa!

My wife and I stayed at La Casa de la Gringa off and on for about a week during our stay in Ecuador. The house is in a quiet and safe neighborhood, close to transportation, shopping and amenities. The rooms were clean and quiet, and hot showers in our private bath were always available. Breakfast was always interesting with tea, coffee, fresh breads, eggs and a mindboggling variety of fresh fruits and juices each day. But the really special part is the family.

We knew we were starting off our Ecuadorian trip with special people when our flight arrived in Quito just after midnight and on short notice request to the owners, Annie and Fausto, they provided a shuttle to pick us up at the airport at 1:00 in the morning. The owners' daughter, Daniela came personally to greet us and make sure we got to the house safely. It was a huge benefit that Daniela spoke excellent English and is well travelled with a wealth of knowledge. about Ecuador and surrounding countries. Daniela shared that knowledge unsparingly and spent a lot of her time, well beyond anything that could be reasonably expected, helping us to book several side trips and sort out everyday life in Quito.
Annie and Fausto are without exception the most hospitable, genuine and sincere people we met anywhere in Ecuador. They have enough English that between that and our dismal Spanish we were able to communicate effectively. And always willing to help out with local knowledge and ideas to make one's stay more enjoyable. Again, as with Daniela, they spent far more time than could possibly be expected helping us in so many ways. It was also very helpful during our sidetrips of several days that we could leave pieces of luggage not needed for a particular activity rather than dragging everything around with us.
During one of those sidetrips I had an unfortunate accident that left me banged up pretty well. On return to La Casa de la Gringa shortly thereafter, Daniela insisted I go the hospital for treatment and personally escorted me, acted as interpreter for the nurses and doctors, took me to the pharmacy to fill prescriptions and then got me back to the house for some rest. And of course both Annie and Fausto expressed their concern and helped out as they could. At this point I felt we were no longer guests but were instead family.
The true test of a place is if you would go back, and without hesitation this is the place we will stay in Quito when we go back.

We booked this place solely on trip advisors reviews. I cannot understand how this place was ever rated #1!!!
As I lay here writing this in the B+B I am overcome by the awful smell of mold and mildew. I just pray I don't pick up any respiratory problems. The room is dank and musty and feels like an old basement redo. The sheets were clean but the blankets and bed covers are not and have hair and dead insects on it. The room is very dusty. There is a shortage of water so we have to "arrange" when to shower and "maybe" we will have hot water. Plus there were no towels provided. I should have known when we arrived that the 2 barking dogs would be a problem and yes they were. Barking on and off through the night. I am so irritated that I want to ask for a discount as this is the most inferior and expensive place we have stayed in a month. Still lying here awake and cant wait to check out. The owners are nice.

We received this review with surprise, shock, and sadness. We work with a lot of love to make our guests feel at home. We carefully clean the rooms every day. We are very sorry you had a bad time. All of our other guests have been very happy here.

Annie and Fausto do have the gift of hosting people and making them welcome. Along with all the attention and information one would like to have about a new place, they also provide delicious traditional meals and are great companies to improve someone's Spanish skills. The rooms are extremely cozy and the location can make foreigners experience a bit of the daily life of an authentic Ecuadorian neighborhood. In addition to being a safe area, one can have a nice walk to Mariscal and catch a transportation to the historic downtown. It is definitely a place to go back to and to recommend to other travelers.

La Casa de La Gringa was our home base in Quito during 3 months of travel around a Ecuador, between January & April, 2014.

We stayed there on 5 separate occasions for a total of 11 nights. We can't say enough about the hospitality we found there! The hosts, Annie & Fausto, made us feel really at home, and were patient & helpful as we tried to improve our Spanish. They provided lots of useful information about what to see in Quito & area, and how to get around. The meals were great, especially all the different fruits & freshly made juices. We happily took advantage of the extras they offer, such as airport transfers & supper in their home. As well, we stored unneeded clothing, such as warm sweaters, when we went off to Galapagos and the Amazon. The location is convenient: a 15-minute walk from the Mariscal Foch tourist area. The rooms are lovely, spacious, bright, & homey, and there is a quiet, private courtyard.

Most importantly, Annie & Fausto & the rest of their family, made our time in Ecuador so very special & memorable.

In summary, if you're looking for a truly Ecuadorean experience, with genuinely warm, caring people, stay here. We certainly hope to return again, sometime.

We stayed here for a week this winter. The most hospitable folks anywhere, what a tribute to Ecuador they truly represent..
The place is as an smallpox home in Ecuador would be,bathroom could use help,as VERY small and. Nolace for anything mirror is miniature but clean. Breakfast was same, same, same, e ertday,2 fruits and juice. However in easy walking to a great bakery!
Food is bland in Ecuador but the fruits are so wonderful. This is very well located for buses and or cabs.
The family is so worth a trip there just to meet, truly wonderful!

Room Tip: Look at the bathroom of the room prior to accepting,as each different, very important!
