I don't generally give 5-star reviews, but in this case I will make an exception. The accommodations themselves were typical Marriott and that's a good thing. I would rate the bed, linens, bathroom, cleanliness, room size, etc. at 4-stars. We were at the end of the 5th floor hall and it was quiet as well.
Where Marriott Quito really shines is their service to their Marriott Rewards members. I'm a Gold level member and I was treated very well. The points needed for a complimentary stay are a bargain compared to Marriott's with similar features. In addition I was upgraded to the Executive level room and had access to the Executive Lounge throughout my stay. That meant free beverages including sodas, beer, wine and bottled water as well as food. We ate our breakfast in the lounge every morning. Some Executive or Concierge lounges at other hotels just have a continental breakfast with muffins and bagels, but this Marriott included a variety of full menu options including an omelette station, smoked salmon, meats, cheeses, and exotic fruits. We probably saved $200 by eating breakfast and snacks at the Marriott.
Also, I don't know if it's just the gold membership or they do this for everyone, but each night we had surprises waiting for us when we returned to our room. The first night it was a big platter of fruit, the second night it was fresh cut roses, another night it was chocolate. The perks kept getting better and better.
Finally, I had a midnight flight out of Quito so that sort of conflicted with the checkout time of noon. I simply made a phone call to the front desk, asked if I could stay until 7:00 pm and they said "no problemo." When I asked if there would be a prorated charge, they said, "No you're a gold member. Enjoy your extended stay and travel safely."
I have stayed in a lot of hotels, particular the Marriott brand and this one ranks up with the very best in terms of service. It may not have been as authentic as staying in a hacienda or boutique hotel, but for safety, convenience and service and wouldn't stay anywhere else in Quito. For the Executive lounge and the very generous late checkout the JW Marriott Quito is elevated to a 5-star experience.
By the way, we had a 6.9 earthquake while we were there (2/9/13) and we never felt in danger at the Marriott. In fact, our local guide told us that the government considers the Marriott the safest building in Ecuador because of its all-steel construction.
