Online photos of this hotel do not do it justice. I loved the amazingly quiet, but central location (no motorcycle, dog, or rooster noises like I heard elsewhere in Quito) and the extremely eclectic decor of this family-run hotel. The food was great and I was happy not to have to venture out at night. The little computer room with 5 high-speed Internet PCs was also wonderful. If you need totally modern, corporate art decor to feel comfortable, this hotel is not for you.

We liked our room and the friendliness of the staff. The hotel didn't have any maps of the surrounding area so we wound up exploring by foot. It's a bit of a walk to get to a lively area. We had dinner at a local kitchen (to the left of the hotel) where you get a full meal for $1.50!!!

Before our trip to the Galapagos we stayed 3 days at Los Alpes. The hotel is very quaint and charming. We initially enjoyed our stay. We were able to overlook the scratchy blankets, hit and miss hot water and cold rooms. I had a great triple room that had 2 separate rooms and plenty of space. The rooms became very cold at night and there were no heaters in the rooms. Our first night, there was a police chase outside the hotel where I listened to a man get beaten with a billy club by a policeman. By 6:00am the roosters started to crow. Breakfast was adequate: eggs, coffee, toast. The women serving were very kind. They also had 6 computers with good internet service. On our return from Galapagos we stayed 1 more night there. As I was checking out, there was suddenly a $40.00 charge for them stowing a bag for one of our friends travelling with us. We were never told about this charge. I refused to pay it. By the time they add taxes and serve charges, the prices they initially state are almost doubled. Also, when you order drinks in the lounge, you often have to pay cash as they will not put them on your room charge. Although I have a pretty good grasp of Spanish....I could not understand the waiter's explanation of this. With now realizing how inexpensive Quito is, I think Los Alpes is overpriced for what they offer.

We always welcome comments from our customers as we care very much about the quality of service we provide. We are a small family hotel that has been in business for over thirty years.

There are no hidden charges at Los Alpes and so we have written to the reviewer for more information in this regard.

Los Alpes has very competitive prices particularly considering its location. As you can see from the large number of very positive reviews we enjoy a very good reputation and many of our customers from the US come time and time again.

Our room prices are listed on our website as are the additional charges we are required by law to charge. These total 22% and it is unfair to say that we charge almost double the advertised price. The service charge (10%) is given to the employees as required by law. The other 12% is for local taxes.

We never charge people for leaving their bags and people are welcome to do so whenever they leave Quito for trips to the Galapagos and so on.

Other hotels would charge for internet use but we usually include this in the price and include free wi-fi for all customers, they also charge for the use of a safe which we do not, they charge for bag storage which we do not and others even add on the 10% businesses in Ecuador are charged by the linternational credit card companies, we do not. We charge a small amount for laundering and pressing people's clothes.

It can get chilly in Quito at night due to the altitude. However, as we have the same weather all year round and no seasons we do not tend to have central heating in our homes and very few hotels would have this either. If guests are cold we will always provide extra blankets or a portable electric heater for their room.

The incident with the policeman is something which could happen anywhere in a city such as this but is very unusual for the safe area where Los Alpes is located. Similarly, bird noises such as cocks crowing are beyond our control. Our street is actually very quiet compared to many other hotels where noise from traffic and people walking back from bars and restaurants cause disturbance throughout the night.

We stayed at the Hotel Los Alpes for one week and really enjoyed it. Because it’s in a large house (that is beautifully and artistically decorated), it feels more like a Bed and Breakfast than a hotel. Also, for the most part, the hotel staff was very friendly and accommodating. They arranged an excellent driver for us to go to Otavalo who was fun to talk to (but didn’t speak a word of English) and very efficient. Our room was quite large (especially compared to hotel rooms in Europe) with a sitting area and writing desk. When we arranged to have our laundry done through the hotel, the service was fast and cheap. They also hung up my husband’s shirts in the closet. The rest of the clothes were placed on the bed, neatly folded. Internet access was included in the room charge. They do serve dinner at the hotel which is very convenient (although we never tried it, due to the many diverse restaurant choices in New Town). For what we wanted to do, we thought the location was excellent, just a few short blocks from the Artisan Market and great restaurants. (We had no problems at all walking around Quito at night. Just use common sense.) Our only minor complaint was that the room didn’t have enough heat and we could find no thermostat to adjust it (although we never asked the hotel about this, giving them a chance to remedy the situation). Overall, it’s an excellent choice and we would highly recommend Hotel Los Alpes.

We stayed in the family suite, two bedrooms with a connecting sitting room. The rooms were more than satisfactory and the value was tremendous. Señor Claudio and his staff were always ready to answer our questions and satisfy our every need. We made use of the laundry service, the wireless internet, and even room service (which may not be advertised). The breakfast is complete but has little variety. The location is reasonably convenient, just two blocks from a main thoroughfare and bus stop. La Mariscal is within walking distance, about a mile.

We booked Los Alpes because of the high reviews from Trip Advisor. Even though it was adequate I would not have rated it as high. But for the money you pay, the value is good. As two women traveling on our own, we were not comfortable with the area. It is in a nice enough neighborhood but we did not see any restaurants within walking distance. The hotel seemed isolated but it is very quiet.
The public area of the hotel is fine, nice areas to sit, to have a drink or to just enjoy the warmth from the fireplace. The dining room is bright and the food was very good. The staff was wonderful, very helpful and the service is excellent. We stayed in two rooms off of the main floor with its own sitting area. The rooms and bathrooms are tired and worn but clean. My girlfriend's room was not very comfortable as the mattress was very lumpy and the bathroom was a bit shabby.
Overall, I would recommend this hotel if you just need a place for a short time or if you en route to other towns. If you are watching your $$ this is a very good place to stay in Quito. My girlfriend and I did stay one night and then stayed at Mansion De Angel for the rest of our visit to Ecuador. A little more pricey, but we loved it! Better location for us.
FYI---unless you are staying at the high-end hotels, most places do not have heat. Bring warm pjs. They will provide space heaters in the rooms but it can be a little cool in the mornings.
We loved Ecuador and can't wait to go back!!

I loved everything about this place. The location is within walking distance of major historical sites in the city as well as the main entertainment district (and close to the light rail line as well).

The room had antique furnishings in good contition and was very comfortable. There was a small balcony, large closet and cable tv with many movie/sports channels.

The service was outstanding. I had dinner and breakfast several times on-site as well as beverages from the bar. The staff also ironed some clothes for no additional charge and gave recommendations for the area. There are safe deposit boxes at the front desk as well.

For a price of $50USD I thought the Hotel Los Alpes was a steal.
