It is amazing to me that an artist could make it his life's devotion to express the sorrows of man, not only in his country but throughout the world. This visit was my introduction to his work and while some may find it depressing at first once one understands his underlying cause is to inspire the need and his wish for peace in the world one day than your focus becomes more on his genius.
His home is on the same grounds and also contains a museum of his work both finished and unfinished in his studio. The house tour was in Spanish and at appointed times. When we were there it began at 2:15pm.
All in all a very moving experience.

This was an emotionally engaging experience enhanced by the clear commentary by the museum guide. I had received a brief introduction to Guayasamin's work at the National Assembly and this visit was enhanced by the guide's comments and other participants' questions and observations. The pace was a bit rapid for me. There is so much to absorb and see and reflect upon. Beautifully tranquil place to be while considering...what next and how. Gratitude and respect.

The artist Oswaldo Guayasamin, champion of human rights, built an extraordinarily beautiful & comfortable home high above Quito. His collections, his studio - everything - is exceptional.

While touring Quito be sure to schedule a visit to the Guayasamin Museum and Temple of Man.

Visitors will get to tour the last home of this famous Ecuadorian artist and view his private collection, his studio and a few of his unfinished pieces. The grounds of the home are complete with sculptures of the artists and a beautiful view of the heart of the city.

The "Temple of Man" or Capilla del Hombre is Guayasamins homage to man. Some pieces are quite macabre while others display man's ability to care and love for others. This "temple" was never fully finished as the artists dies before its completion. This temple could also be considered Guayasamin's homage to himself as well.

Take a cab from anywhere in Quito to the museum. It is located in the "Bella Vista" neighborhood. If you are willing to walk be prepared to walk uphill. The neighborhood is safe during the day. Entrance is free on Sundays. Entrance to the home and temple are separate entry fees to be paid at the main gate.
