Cafe Cultura was a fantastic place to stay! Each room is uniquely decorated and the fireplace and library are cozy and inviting! The included breakfast exceeded my expectations. The only negative is that the floors are creaky and a hot shower can be hard to come by if you're showering at peak times!

The rooms are really nice. This hotel is a bit pricy for quito, but the rooms are really nice and the location is great. It is in the new mariscal area, but a few blocks (5-6) from the main plaza and restaurants. So the hotel is in a quiet area far from the noisy restaurants and pubs, yet within walking distance to the main plaza.

Front desk staff is friendly and nice. You can leave your bags at the reception while you're away traveling outside of quito. A great benefit especially since there are lots of places near quito where you can make 1-2 day trips.

  • Liked — nice rooms
  • Disliked — price - a bit too high for quito

Cafe Cultura is a charming hotel that is conveniently located without being smack in the middle of the tourism kitz of Quito. My boyfriend and I made the hotel our home base in Quito between our mountaineering/hiking and Galapagos excursions. We actually stayed here three times over a two week period (short 1 night stays between trips elsewhere in the country) and so got to experience three different rooms, all of which had wonderfully distinct decor and character. No two rooms are the same. But all have really creative mural paintings and simple yet charming decor. The hotel restaurant served a wonderful breakfast. And the staff were welcoming and accommodating. We highly recommend this hotel to couples, young and old, and to adventure travelers who would enjoy a bit of pampering between excursions.

  • Liked — Charming decor; lots of personality
  • Disliked — Not much to speak of with respect to view; not much outdoor space/garden/patio

Expectations much exceeded reality. The photo in their ad shows a beatiful structure in what looks like a nice residential setting, surrouned by blue sky - it´s been photoshopped - the setting is grimy, neighboring buildings have been cropped out, and the sky ain´t usually blue. The quality of the renovation in respect to workmanship is fair - there are surprisingly funky touches such as gaps in flooring. The upkeep of the property is at best fair - common areas are not clean, bird droppings on outside seating, etc., landscaping has not been attended to. Our room was quite small and cramped. Hot water was mostly not available. Hotel nickel and dimed us on all charges such as charging us $11 to store a small suitcase for a week after we had stayed four days and purchased meals, plus charged for internet use. In all, we were very disappointed.

My husband and I stayed here 3 nights in November 2007. The moment we walked in, we felt warmly welcomed by the staff. Our room was beyond our expectations, complete with rose petals on the bed. The restaurant serves fantastic food in a cozy atmosphere. Overall, we very much enjoyed our experience. The only drawback I would mention is its location. Although we were within walking distance of the Mariscal, we were advised not to walk after dark due to crime. And given that we were pretty much on the equator, evening approached very quickly! That said, I wouldn't trade Cafe Cultura for a closer location - its warmth, coziness and quiet were all well worth it!

This is a very different hotel in a colonial building located in the heart of Quito. Each room is individually decorated with elaborate faux paintings and lots of charm. It's an expensive option for Ecuador, but worth the experience. The staff is lovely and the gardens charming! We'll come again.

Stayed for 3 nights before going to the Galapagos, and endured one night before going home to London. Staff are helpful, and rooms and main areas are very clean, but we hated everything else. Our first room was on the ground floor near the road. Very noisy, and room was poorly maintained, with lightbulbs not working. The room was already gloomy and depressing with a brown mural covering the walls, and lack of light made it even worse. Doors to bathroom didn't close properly, and the light was so bad my husband couldn't see to shave! Door to room was so thin you could see light through it. The bathroom had no ventilation, so smelled damp and musty. The public areas are very quaint and the library's OK. Some rooms are obviously much better than others, so my tip is to inspect all the ones they have free and insist on the one you want, rahter than the one the staff want to palm off. We did get a rather better room on our last night, but had to insist that we wouldn't take one on the 3rd floor. Ther's no lift and the air in Quito is very thin. Restaurant is overpriced and you can get better food for more realistic prices outside. Reception staff did let us keep our room for 5 extra hours at no extra charge as our flight was a late one.
