“Great Location and Fine Breakfast”
Reviewed 28 April 2009

This hotel is in a great location if you want to stay in the Old City. It is right on a corner looking into the Plaza de Santo Domingo, The Restaurant is great also with a great view of the Old City. I noted that many people came from outsdie to lunch there. The service provided was superb. I could have used more hot water, but it depends on the time of day. I had trouble climbing the stairs to my room -- no elevator.

When we arrived in Old Town without reservations, we went first to the nearby Hotel San Francisco de Quito, which looked charming but did not have a room for us. We settled here instead, and it was OK, but not as good a deal for the money based on budget places in Quito that we saw.

The hotel was clean and safe. The included breakfast in the top floor restaurant was simple, but nice. The coffee was good, the marmalade was excellent, and the view was fabulous.

About our room -- the good: it was clean, the bathroom was fine, and as an interior room it was quiet. The bad: the bed was old and lumpy. Sheets, curtains, carpet, all were well worn.

We enjoyed staying in Old Town more than the touristy Mariscal.

For nearby food, Cafe del Fraile in the archbishop's palace mall was really good -- better and a bit cheaper than Hasta la Vuelta Señor in the same place (we ate at both).

Good location, lousy everything else. Four floors with no elevator, brown water from tap, sigarette-butts filled window box, breakfast promised but not served. And to top it all a leaky roof in our fourth floor room. Did I mention a TV without a remote -- not important since there is no reception anyway.

We stayed the first night at the Real Audencia in Old Town. While the room was clean, and the place well kept in general, and included free Internet, I really do not recommend it. The bed was one of the oldest I have slept in and the pillows were as lumpy as they get. Also, there was no heat. I really do not recommend staying anywhere without heat in Quito as it gets quite cold at night even in the summer. We moved to the New City the next couple nights and stayed at the Mercure. It was top notch in terms of cleanliness, amenities, attention, food (the breakfast buffet was great!), etc., but lacked any charm of the old city places (it felt like a typical 4-4.5 star hotel that you’ll find in any big city). However, after the bad experience at Real Audencia and the many nights on the boat (we had done a 5 day Galapagos trip prior to Quito), it was a welcome respite.

Dear Mr. SEANinSoCal,

Please receive our apologies for such a late respond to your comment. Even though a lot of time has passed, we feel that is necessary for us to respond to you.

We are deeply sorry that your stay with us in the past did not fulfill your expectations, unfortunately on that time another team was in charge of the management of the hotel. Since 2008, a complete modification and many improvements have been made in all aspects of the hotel. One of this changes has been; the complete change of all mattresses, bed linen (100% cotton and non-allergenic) and pillows.

2 years ago we have received various recognitions for quality and excellent staff attention. At this time the hotel is aimed to offer all guests quality and a good service, our main goal is to make each guest experience unforgettable.

We hope you will give us another opportunity to offer you our services in the near future.

45 dollars per night for a double room, including breakfast, free internet and a free taxi from the airport was good value. Very helpful staff, clean spacious rooms and the hot water was almost always hot. One minor gripe, the restaurant was not open in the evening on 3 of our 6 nights. Shame because the food. when available was very good and reasonably priced.

The Good:
The airport pick-up service was excellent. The location was perfect. The room was large with large windows & nice views. The staff seemed friendly. The restaurant was quite good.
The Bad:
We had booked a non-smoking suite but when we arrived at around midnight, it was unavailable. We were given some story about a guest occupying the room who had disappeared for the past 2 days & his belongings were still in the room. Why hadn't they emailed us to let us know? Why wasn't the police called? We were given a double room instead which was not non-smoking. The room had no safe even though we were told that every room had one. We enquired about this & were told that they meant they had a safe at the front desk for everyone to use. Not quite the same thing & definitely not what their website states. Also, the remote for the telly was dead which didn't matter anyway because all of the channels (cable & non) were very fuzzy.
The Ugly:
The hotel is drab - not a problem, but our room was grimy & shabby with a unacceptable standard of cleanliness for a hotel claiming to be of 4-star quality. The room had a strong, musty smell & the traffic noise was excessive. I was expecting both but not at this level. I was awoken by 4am by the noise & discovered I was also choking on the musty smell mixed with stale cigarette odour. The curtains & walls were dirty, the bed was too soft & lumpy & the springs could be felt. The bedclothes looked as though they had come from a homeless shelter. They were complimented by weary-looking pillow begging for euthanasia. The fluffy, dark green carpet was unusually thick in some areas & seemed almost alive, or something under it was. The bathroom was unclean & the loo was grimy. Surprisingly, the towels appeared acceptable. The bathroom door didn't shut properly & there was an approx. 6 inch gap between the top of the door & the ceiling. This might have once been covered with glass but now it appeared to be the bathroom's air conditioning. We noticed that the entrance doors to the other hotel rooms also had large gaps around them, as though they were falling off.
The End:
We left the hotel the next morning even though our plan was to stay a number of days.

I've stayed in non-luxury hotels with lower rates than this one but this one compared very poorly. Cleanliness is not a luxury. I suspect that the owner doesn't care about the quality of their service & believes that the hotel's location compensates for the lack of basic comforts. Certainly not for me. And to those people that have recommended this hotel highly on various web sites, it can only mean they live in their own houses under similar conditions. If you are one of these people, then you will be happy here. If not, I would not recommend this hotel at all.

If you plan to visit the Old Town Quito, this is the most convenient place to stay. Very helpful and friendly staff! Their restaurant serves good food, affordable and have a nice view of Sto Domingo Plaza. Attached is a photo taken by my husband.
