Owner description: Resembling a type of small bread (panecillo), this hill makes an excellent observation point over Quito and features La Virgen del Panecillo, a majestic sculpture that can be seen from any location in the city.

Take a taxi because it sits above a bad neighborhood. One for the views would be a grand multimillion neighborhood anywhere else but for some reason this neighborhood isn't. The statue is grand and beautiful and safe to visit. Go to the top and be the King or Queen of Quito.

We were not so lucky because it was very cloudy but you have the most breathtaking views from Quito, please do not miss it!

While there is not much to do at El Panecillo itself, the views from this point make the visit completely worthwhile. The statue "La Virgen" is nice, but the main attraction is the amazing panorama of Quito.

El Panecillo, crowned with the aluminium statue "Virgin of Quito" dominates the skyline of Quito. Don't even think of walking up this hill, the threat of being mugged is very real at all hours of the day. I was mugged at 5pm in on Guyaguil when walking away from the old town. Get a taxi to take you up the hill, wait for you and return you back. The word Panecillo comes from either small loaf, or mould used in sugar cane juice production. The hill has always played a significant role in the city. Originally a site for an Incan observatory, it later had a Spanish fort built on it in the 19th C. The virgin statue is a recent addition going back to 1975. Part of the Spanish fort is visible at the foot of the statue, a little cylindrical building called the Panecillo Pot. It is a cistern built in 1815. The best thing about the hill, is the view back across Quito.

A monumental view of the city of Quito, no matter where you look (east, west, north and south) at ove 3000mts the Virgen de Quito stands firm looking north.
A must for any person visiting Quito
