“Beautiful large church”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 May 2014

Located that the northern end of the old town on the corner of Chile & Cuenca. The expanse of white washed walls hides a wonderfully beautiful interior. The gold is a little more subdued than some of the other churches in town. The underside of the dome is tastefully painted in pinks and blues. Around the large courtyard are reliefs depicting chaotic scenes when Quito has been hit by earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. A statue of Neptune sits serenely in the middle. The bell tower - highest in Quito is rumoured to be haunted. This is free to enter on Sundays.

“Oft neglected, but absolutely worth it”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 June 2013

Very few tourists make it to La Merced, even though it's right in the middle of Old Town. You won't be disappointed. The walls and ceilings are a lacework of white and pink. The inside is just so relaxing to the eyes. In the back of the chapel are the painted doors in the stone archway to the original church. Admission is free. Hours are Mon-Fri 07h00 to 17h30, but closed from 12h00 to 14h30.

“Absolutely beautiful”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 February 2013 via mobile

I've lived in Quito for 10 months and had not visited this church since I always Lund it closed. Today was my lucky day! The church is beautiful! Baroque altar be Bernardo Delagarde, wonderful canvases throughout the church along with shrines to various Virgin Mary's. out side the church there is a wonderful stone cross guarded by four lions in a primitive style. Well worth a visit.

“Very nice church”

excellent restoration work of the surrounding plaza and buildings, please update the photo on Trip advisor since this one corresponds to Basilica del Voto Nacional, not La Merced... both in Quito
