And relatively affordable - compared to more touristic places the prices are essentially the same, yet the atmosphere at Casa Gangotena is infinitely better. We had a light, fresh lunch of starters paired with a lovely wine in a peaceful back patio that was worlds away from the busy noise of the surrounding streets.

We stayed next door in a boutique hotel, so we walk past this place every day and wanted to check it out. We stopped by for dinner one night, the doorman was so friendly, walked us to the restaurant to make a reservation. It was not open yet for dinner so we went to the hotel's roof to take in the amazing view of Plaza de San Fransisco before dinner.

The dining room was very well appointed, tastefully decorated if a little stiff. We were seated promptly, service staff was gracious and spoke English well.

Our food arrived fresh and hot. Friend enjoyed his Caesar Salad, and another had ribs (sauce was too sweet but ribs were tender and meaty).

My llama spring rolls (yes llama the cute spitty animal) was tasty, portion was big for an appetizer, but after two weeks traveling in Ecuador, I kind of expected large potions. My main course was a sous-vide cuy (guinea pig) with curried potatoes. The cuy was meltingly tender, almost falling apart, and seasoned well. It would have been perfect if the skin was crispy.

Pricing was on the high side, but matches the venue and the quality of the food. Highly recommended.

We went for lunch and we tried to visit the room area in hotel but we were not allowed. The restaurant is good but not spectacular. It offers Ecuadorian and International dishes but they are just average quality. The location is good for visiting the downtown area and we noticed that the property has been refurbished, but the decor of the restaurant is nothing worth a visit. The pictures in the web site show a much more splendid place than it actually is. At night the down town area is deserted so we would be very scare walking in the neighborhood. I would not stay at this hotel and I would not recommend it. Quito has hotels that are much better in both location and quality.

We ate here at the restaurant on two occasions. The service is outstanding and the decor lush and elegant.

The first meal was excellent which is why we returned. I was a little disappointed on the second visit, I had the Sea Bass with sea food. The fish was cooked beautifully but the seafood - prawns, scallops and squid was definiately overcooked and chewy. Other than that it was a great experience. The range of desserts was superb and they were very tasty indeed.

We visit Quito a lot and have an apartment there. I have never stayed at the Gangotena, but have visited for lunch when in the old city. It's a great location and fantastic old building renovated immaculately. There is a restaurant, though you can eat in the atrium/lounge area, I like it there is very light and open and has views of the pleasant garden. The food is excellent and well presented, the local dishes done in a modern way are very good and always very fresh. Most of all the staff are very friendly and attentive.
