Just as the Compania de Jesus was amazing for its golden glory, so, the Basilica is amazing only for its enormous size and stripped back bareness. It is, however, worth the lung busting trek up the hill just to see the views from the top and also for the very beautiful stained glass windows.

The basilica itself is unfinished (for almost 120 years), but still very impressive in sheer size and artistry (i.e Instead of gargoyles adorning the exterior they have placed iguanas, condors, and other indigenous animals). I'm sure most of you know how a church looks like so I'm gonna get to the fun part. At the main entrance you'll find a ticket booth that for $2 will allow you entrance to the observation deck of the basilica and I highly suggest you do it! On the way up the winding staircase you'll come across a restaurant, gift shops, and several look out points one of which you'd have to cross a wooden bridge above the basilica's ceiling to get to. From on deck you could see almost of Quito and the surrounding volcanoes on a clear day!!!

Most visitors think that this is the cathedral when they first see it though it is in fact just to the North of the Colonial centre. As churches go it is just rather surprising to see it here. They still seem to be working on it but the great attraction is the views you get once you climb up the tower and along the spine of the church. Nice cafe in one of the towers which seems to be attuned more to locals than tourists.

This is a must see in the old town. We enjoyed the climb to the top of the steeples for a great view of the city. The interior was pretty amazing too.

You can get all the way up to the bell towers which gives a magnficent view over Quito, especially in the morning. And there is actually a walkway between the ceiling-domes and the slate-roof which I had never seen before anywhere.
