“"Secret view"”
Reviewed 2 June 2014

There is a tour fee or walk it on your own. $2. Statues leave you at awe. Theres turtles and other animals adorning the Basilica. There is mommified bodies in there. Towers give you awsome views of the city. 24 chapels inside. There are many churches to visit in Quito but this is one of the most visited. Built in honor of the consecration of the State to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Here it is. If you visit Quito, you will eventually see a huge statue of the Virgin on top of a hill named El Panecillo. Wonderful story there. read it. Inside cathedral there is a sacred heart of jesus. Stand in front of it. look for a small window on wall of cathedral across from it. If the weather allows it, you will have a clear view of the Virgin. Most people wont see this site. Its beautiful. Speaks of the love of a mothers heart for her sons. Amazing place.

“Amazing views”
Reviewed 29 May 2014 via mobile

I don't think there is anything I can add to the many reviews already written other than that I have seen a good number of basilicas, doms etc. and this one ranks way up there. An absolute must see, in my opinion.

“Beautiful view of the city”
Reviewed 28 May 2014

It was $2 pp to go up the tower. The view from the top of the old bell tower is amazing. Definitely worth the $2. To see the bottom floor of the church was another $2 pp. The interior was also pretty impressive and had numerous beautiful stained glass windows.

“Gothic hilltop church”
Reviewed 27 May 2014

Dominating the northern part of the old town is this gothic basilica. Known as Basilica of the National Vote. Built only in the early 20th C it has some great gargoyles, depicting wildlife of the Amazon and Galapagos. Look for the Iguanas and Tortoises.

“A beautiful church and walk”
Reviewed 25 May 2014

This church is in the middle of old town, and it is a wonderful walk across the valley the majority of hostels in/near old town. Yyou can see the church in the sky line from nearly anywhere in Quito if you are in old/new town, so it is very easy to find. there is a gorgeous park in front of the church where street performers often hang out. the archtiecture is fantastic, and very accurate to the period they attempted to emulate. a well recomended outing to combine with st peters and/or some of the museums in and around old town. the only negative is you are required to pay to go inside or climb the tower, but the price is 2 dollars, so not bank breaking
