The best thing Hostal La Cartuja has going for it is a super staff, especially Diana, and a quiet, relatively safe location. I say that despite the fact that we were robbed out in front of the hotel when we arrived. This was NOT the fault of the hotel. We were set up by our taxi driver. I have posted an account of the incident on the Quito forum.
La Cartuja is a clean, quiet, relaxing and relatively inexpensive place to stay in Quito. A bit far from Old Town, it is nevertheless close to several restaurants, banks, and other facilities, and taxis (there ARE honest ones) are readily available. You get a basic room (with lousy pillows and occasional lapses in the availability of hot water) and a decent breakfast (eggs, toast, coffee, and juice). You have access to a lovely, grassy courtyard, a computer, and books and magazines. After breakfast, you pay for coffee, tea, and bottled water (as well as beer, wine, and juice, as you would expect).
If you're an older traveler, La Cartuja may be preferable to one of the "hipper" hostals in Old Town or the Mariscal. What would improve it would be the availability of transport from the airport (which would have prevented the robbery we experienced) and an on-site cafe. But hey, you can't have everything.
