“A Quiet Quito Retreat - Hostal La Cartuja”
Reviewed 3 April 2009

The best thing Hostal La Cartuja has going for it is a super staff, especially Diana, and a quiet, relatively safe location. I say that despite the fact that we were robbed out in front of the hotel when we arrived. This was NOT the fault of the hotel. We were set up by our taxi driver. I have posted an account of the incident on the Quito forum.

La Cartuja is a clean, quiet, relaxing and relatively inexpensive place to stay in Quito. A bit far from Old Town, it is nevertheless close to several restaurants, banks, and other facilities, and taxis (there ARE honest ones) are readily available. You get a basic room (with lousy pillows and occasional lapses in the availability of hot water) and a decent breakfast (eggs, toast, coffee, and juice). You have access to a lovely, grassy courtyard, a computer, and books and magazines. After breakfast, you pay for coffee, tea, and bottled water (as well as beer, wine, and juice, as you would expect).

If you're an older traveler, La Cartuja may be preferable to one of the "hipper" hostals in Old Town or the Mariscal. What would improve it would be the availability of transport from the airport (which would have prevented the robbery we experienced) and an on-site cafe. But hey, you can't have everything.

My husband and I met our Peace Corps friends in Quito last week and stayed our first night at the Hotel Cartuja. It's in a quiet neighborhood with plenty of things to do in walking distance. The rooms exceeded my expectations for an Ecuadorian budget hotel--we paid $80 for a quad and got a breakfast of eggs, toast and coffee. The hotel staff were very friendly--they even let us borrow a para agua when we went out to dinner in a rain storm!

This place is a great base to explore the old town and new town of Quito. Comfortable rooms and terrific breakfast included in the price. Located a block from the Casa de Cultura, you can't go wrong.

Quiet neighborhood setting within walking distance (day-time only) of the lively Mariscal area of Quito.

For $50 (double) you get a basic smallish room that is fairly clean and has a tv. This hotel is for the traveler that doesn't want to pay too much, wants to meet other travelers and doesn't want to hang around the hotel too much.

The staff are helpful and all speak English quite well. The bedding is a bit dated and the pillows are very flat. The hot water doesn't always work well. The rooms are fairly clean depending on your standards.

The location is by the Casa de la Cultura but a bit of a hike to the Old City (a good 15 - 20 minutes if you are a good walker) and 10 minutes to the Mariscal district. (By the way, we found the Casa de la Cultura to be the best museum in Quito).

The nice thing about the hotel is that it is fairly quiet for Quito. You will still hear car honks, dogs and car alarms so if you are sensitive bring ear plugs.

Although the hotel says they accept travelers cheques and credit card, you will probably have to pay in cash. Credit cards everywhere in Ecuador attracts a 10% extra charge.

All I can say is be very very cautious in Quito. There is a tonne of robbery. We personally met 5 people who had been robbed. Stick to the main streets and if you feel uncomfortable grap a cab.

I stayed at this hotel for a total of ten days. Part of my stay there was after arrival in Quito and the other part was after touring the Galapagos. The hotel is located behind the U.S. Embassy and is just a few blocks from a market area. The area around the hotel was quite safe and one could walk over to the area of town where there were restaurants and other places of business. The rooms were large and clean and had tv in them. The breakfast consisted of eggs, toast, & coffee and was quite substantial. There was free internet service available as the dining room had a computer and monitor there.

La Cartuja is in a good, central local. The staff is absolutely amazing, especially Miguel. Our trip would not have been what it was had we not stayed there. Make sure to eat eggs at breakfast because they will hold you over until lunch or dinner. The juice here was great, too.

Thanks again for a great trip, Miguel!!!!! - Rachel

We came to this hotel based on other Trip Advisor reviews (even though the last one was about a year old) and I'm very glad we did!
Most of the rooms open onto a lovely courtyard. The hotel is quiet, attended 24-hours, and has super comfortable beds (which is hard to find in Ecuador) and consistently hot water.
The staff were always very helpful: including a 3 a.m. wake-up call and arranging a taxi to the airport at 3:30. We stored our bags there for several days while heading into the mountains, all with no fee and smiling service.
It seems to attract American tourists who are older (50+) and like to travel off the beaten path.
There's one computer-internet and printer available for hotel guest use. Breakfast is included.

  • Liked — Comfy beds and very helpful staff
  • Disliked — No immediatly nearby restaurants, at least 8 blocks away
