If you've seen the movie, you'll know what I mean. My first impression was not as good as my final impression. This little place really grows on you. It's quaint and rustic, and the staff is as friendly and helpful as it is possible to be. Ignacio would have done anything for us. It really did start to feel like we were at home. Our room was very large and our bath was huge--at least twice as big as a normal hotel bath. Along with the extremely friendly staff, I immediately noticed the whole pace was immaculately clean and smelled good.
Breakfast was good and filling. Not a lot of variety but I usually eat oatmeal and a banana, so I don't need a lot of variety (and don't forget this hotel is really inexpensive so don't expect too much). There was always coffee and hot water (and several kinds of tea bags), and lots of fresh fruit in the dining room available whenever you wanted it. One morning we had to leave early to go on a day trip. Ignacio had breakfast for us early so we could eat before we left. We really appreciated that.
We were on the second floor (or first floor if you are from Europe) and we didn't ever need or want an elevator. The whole hotel was quiet and at night it was absolutely silent. Not a car or dog or anything. The neighborhood was peaceful and safe. We easily walked the block and a half to the trole-bus, which was very easy to use. It was so nice to have a real, live person take our money and give us a ticket (no digital machines to negotiate). You then wait a very short time and get on the bus. The stops are well marked and the route is very easy to understand. And it costs $.25 per ride.
The hotel is about 15 minutes walking distance to the El Jardin Mall. This mall is as modern as any in the US. It's a nice place to eat but check out the prices. Everything from the US or Europe is very expensive. This is in sharp contrast to the locally made items which are very reasonably priced.
We had a refrigerator in our room but not all did. There was no in-room safe but there were lock boxes in the lobby, which was very secure because the front door was always locked. You had to be "buzzed" in or out. We arranged to have a car pick us up from the airport through the hotel (email them). it was a very, very good idea. The driver was waiting and we sped off without any hassle. After a day of flying, the last thing I want to do is hassle with trying to get a ride to the hotel. Going back to the airport we again hired a car through the hotel. Ok, the beds are hard as has been mentioned in past reviews, but it's not a deal breaker. We enjoyed our stay at the Sol de Quito.
