“Best Exotic Marigold Hotel in Quito”
Reviewed 19 August 2014

If you've seen the movie, you'll know what I mean. My first impression was not as good as my final impression. This little place really grows on you. It's quaint and rustic, and the staff is as friendly and helpful as it is possible to be. Ignacio would have done anything for us. It really did start to feel like we were at home. Our room was very large and our bath was huge--at least twice as big as a normal hotel bath. Along with the extremely friendly staff, I immediately noticed the whole pace was immaculately clean and smelled good.

Breakfast was good and filling. Not a lot of variety but I usually eat oatmeal and a banana, so I don't need a lot of variety (and don't forget this hotel is really inexpensive so don't expect too much). There was always coffee and hot water (and several kinds of tea bags), and lots of fresh fruit in the dining room available whenever you wanted it. One morning we had to leave early to go on a day trip. Ignacio had breakfast for us early so we could eat before we left. We really appreciated that.

We were on the second floor (or first floor if you are from Europe) and we didn't ever need or want an elevator. The whole hotel was quiet and at night it was absolutely silent. Not a car or dog or anything. The neighborhood was peaceful and safe. We easily walked the block and a half to the trole-bus, which was very easy to use. It was so nice to have a real, live person take our money and give us a ticket (no digital machines to negotiate). You then wait a very short time and get on the bus. The stops are well marked and the route is very easy to understand. And it costs $.25 per ride.

The hotel is about 15 minutes walking distance to the El Jardin Mall. This mall is as modern as any in the US. It's a nice place to eat but check out the prices. Everything from the US or Europe is very expensive. This is in sharp contrast to the locally made items which are very reasonably priced.

We had a refrigerator in our room but not all did. There was no in-room safe but there were lock boxes in the lobby, which was very secure because the front door was always locked. You had to be "buzzed" in or out. We arranged to have a car pick us up from the airport through the hotel (email them). it was a very, very good idea. The driver was waiting and we sped off without any hassle. After a day of flying, the last thing I want to do is hassle with trying to get a ride to the hotel. Going back to the airport we again hired a car through the hotel. Ok, the beds are hard as has been mentioned in past reviews, but it's not a deal breaker. We enjoyed our stay at the Sol de Quito.

Room Tip: We had a single large bed and got a refrigerator and huge bath. Those who had two small beds got a...

Room was small but comfortable. Plenty of hot water. The hike up the stairs at Quito's altitude was a bit of a challenge. Hotel is also off the beaten path....cab drivers had trouble locating it. It's in a quiet area and getting a comfortable nights sleep was not a problem.

Room Tip: Try to get a lower floor

For bussines is a perfect hotel and for work and relaxing in the same time. You have space inside the room and a nice decoration into to the hotel.
I think and advice that to stay with the children will be a perfect hotel.

My wife and I stayed here and both really enjoyed it.
Our host was very attentive and helpful.
The room was large and clean with a great view. Close by if you walk up the hill there is a nice restaurant with amazing views.
Definitely recommend.

We stayed here on 2 occasions for a couple of nights and were extremely impressed with the quality and value for money of this marvellous place. The rooms are certainly not your average accommodation.. We had 4 large beds for the 2 of us and plenty of space to spread our belongings. The hotel is just outside the noisy tourist area but within easy walking distance through well lit streets as well as being close to a hypermarket and large park. Great service from the staff but just don't be too early for breakfast as more items seem to appear as time passes.
Highly recommended.

I led a group of teenagers coming to Quito after a stay in the Galapagos. They were tired and hungry and worn out after a long travel day through Guayaquil. The hotel welcomed us, fed us a great meal, and treated the kids like family. We stayed a second night after a day in Otovalo, and once again were treated to family style treatment and another great dinner. I would not hesitate to return with a group or on my own.

I have stayed here many times and always received the most attentive service of any hotel! It's located in a quiet area, a cab ride away from the busy, touristy area of Ave. Amazonas. It's a lot safer than many areas of town, yet within walking distance of a Mall with an inexpensive food court. I have taken 2 tour groups here to stay and we have not had a single instance of anything being stolen or "misplaced". The staff has been extremely helpful. They provide a nice breakfast in a lovely room with flowers. All the rooms are different. The hallways and sitting areas have painted frescos on the walls.

I always stay here in Quito, whether with a group or on my own. The only thing that has been wrong is that, in the past, there has been a missing light-bulb in a lamp or the shower did not work. I see from their website that renovation must have taken place since I was there last (2008) so I trust that these problems have been solved.
If a lot of people constantly fill up the hotel, the rates will probably go up and there won't be "room in the inn" when I want to go. That's why I don't want everybody to know about it. I enjoy the feeling of "family" that I get when I stay here.

Room Tip: The "Quito" room is very elegant, with a staircase leading to the bathroom and balcony on...
