“Wonderful stay!”
Reviewed 27 December 2013

We stayed here for our final night in Quito after coming back from the Galapagos. Don't let the word 'hostal' fool you. This is not a typical hostal. It's a hotel that feels like you are staying in someone's home - welcoming, charming, and comfortable. Very clean rooms, although small (think European), but the bathroom was large. I'm not a fan of eating at the hotel, however we arrived in the early evening and were tired so we ate in the restaurant/dining room for dinner - the food was excellent and the setting was relaxing. The food was so good we decided to eat dinner here the next night before we left for the airport to return home. The location was centerally located between the old town and new town. Walking distance during the day to La Mariscal shopping/restaurant area. I would definitely stay here again. Staff was very friendly and nice. And there is a rabbit named Brownie who lives in the garden in the courtyard, you can't top that!

Room Tip: We asked for a room with a garden view to reduce street noise. It was very quiet.

My husband and I recently stayed at Hostal de La Rabida as part of a 17 day holiday in Ecuador/Galapagos. The hotel is well situated in the Mariscal area (though we spent most of our time in the Old Town) The service we received from this hotel was first class. The staff were all helpful and charming. For example I discovered I was allergic to the detergent used for the bedding, my sheets were immediately re washed and my laundry re done at no extra charge. The hotel had a lovely sitting area with an open fire which you could sometimes share with the pet rabbit Brownie. The food was also excellent. Highly recomended.

We stayed at La Rabida for a total of 9 nights as we passed through Quito 3 times during our 10 week trip to Ecuador. The hotel is a 1950's era house adapted to be a comfortable and home like hotel -- rather like staying with your grandmother, but cleaner and with better beds! We had the room at the top of the stairs and enjoyed its comfortable size and the large armoire for our clothes.

What makes the Rabida so special is the amazingly friendly, helpful and accommodating staff --particularly Gloria at the front desk who operated as our own personal tour company, suggesting touring ideas, answering questions, and solving problems. She is an phenomenal asset to the owners as I am sure they are aware! In the evenings, Carlos was also very helpful, we loved the fires he kindled each evening, and the bottles of wine he kept for us and served so well.

We ate our dinner there most evenings, as the first time through we were tired from tramping around the old city, and the last time we were just so happy to sit by the fire, sip our wine and wait to be called for dinner. The meals were excellent, and their hard working chef should be commended.

The hotel is not fancy, and if that is what you are looking for, this is not your place, but its welcoming atmosphere and comfortable lounge were so soothing after days of sight seeing -- hard to quantify but so worth it to these two extremely experienced travellers.

The only thing I would suggest is that the self serve portion of the breakfast should be included in the price at this price point. During ten weeks in Ecuador we stayed in 12 hotels, ranging in price from $28 to $150 per night. The Rabida, when taxes are included, comes in at about $90, making it one of the higher priced ones -- our hotels covered the $20+, $30+, $40+, $50+, $60+, $90, $120, and $150 so we experienced a few! Only the 2 hostels at $28 and the Rabida charged extra for breakfast. It seems that in Ecuador breakfast is expected by travellers and I suggest it would be a nice touch to improve customer satisfaction.

We loved Ecuador, would return any time, and OF COUSE, the Rabida would be our only choice for Quito!

This was a wonderful choice of places to stay in Quito. The staff is so friendly and helpful, they go the extra mile to make you feel comfortable. A fabulous value and a very Ecuadorean experience. The food is terrific. It is convenient to dine at the Hostel as we did not want to be wandering the streets of Quito in darkness. There is nothing negative to say about this place if you plan on staying in La Mariscal. Convenient access to public trransportation and walking to the lovely La Carolina park and botanical garden. Rooms are suitable, beds are comfortable with plenty of storage so you do not have to live out of your suitcase. Again, I cannot commend the staff high enough. A 5-star experience.

My partner and I stayed here after two weeks in the Amazon Basin. We really needed a comfortable place for three nights, and La Rabida was great. From the moment we hit the front gate to our departure we enjoyed our time here. Gloria, Judy, Carlos, the chef, the housekeeping, etc. were very nice and helpful. Although this was our first visit to Quito we really just wanted to relax and do minimal 'sightseeing'. Upon checkin Gloria gave us a local map, suggested a 'compact' itinerary (Old Town, La Rhonda Street, Art Saturday at Parque del Ejido), then pointed us toward Crepes and Waffles Cafe for a nice, light lunch. Our stay equaled this great first impression experience. Review of Hostal de La Rabida:

The hotel: Located on a quieter street near the Mariscal area, a five minute walk to it's dining and shopping. Other dining options were closer to the hotel and several large bank ATMs were two minutes walk away. The immediate area seemed fairly safe to us, possibly an advantage being out of the main tourist area. It is hard to state the hotel's driving time to the airport. On arrival the Friday afternoon drive was well over an hour. Our return to the airport departing the hotel at 4:30 AM took only 25 minutes. The hotel is 12 rooms? in a renovated colonial style building. There is breakfast and dinner available in the hotel. Beautifully decorated, very cozy, and very clean. Staff is available 24 hours a day, always pleasant and accommodating. It helps to learn a little Spanish prior to your Ecuador travels: language was not a big problem here but sometimes expedites things. The hotel has a lovely sitting room with a fireplace and a library/bar area. No review would be complete without mentioning Brownie, the resident pet rabbit. His home is the walled garden/patio area on the first level, and this pet is so adorable. Some travelers are wary of small, local hotels with homey touches such as this. We enjoy the family-type atmosphere and the comfortable surroundings, and use TA to find hotels like La Rabida. Additionally most of our money spent here stays in the local economy, rather than a corporate entity.

The room: We were in room #2. We had requested a room with outside access for my partner, the smoker. Our room was perfect and had a large terrace off the bedroom overlooking the street. Large, very comfortable bed, nice linens, ample pillows. Plenty of space for us to place our duffels and backpacks out of the way. Our room had a large amoire for hanging clothes, and several storage shelves. As with the rest of the property the room was tastefully decorated. The bathroom was very clean, everything worked, fluffy towels, nice liquid soap dispenser (I hate the soap bar on sink thing). Plenty of hot water and a small window for fresh air. A pitcher of purified water and glasses were on the writing table, with refills readily available. The lcd tv had satellite reception with a decent selection of programming. Double doors led to the large terrace, which had a cushioned patio set for seating. The wifi worked great in all areas. Some street noise could be heard which diminished as the evenings wore on, but was never really a nuisance. The hotel itself was very quiet and we hardly noticed the other guests early departures and late arrivals.

The food: We ate breakfast at the hotel. The a la carte selections were perfect for us as we are cereal/yogurt/fruit eaters with a cup of coffee in the morning. We lunched out, two times at Crepes and Waffles, some street food in Old Town, and a cafe in Mariscal. We ate supper all three nights at the hotel. We were tired, feeling a little ill, and didn't feel like venturing out at night to dine. The food here was very good. The selections were plentiful and the prices very reasonable in my opinion. The core entrees are Italian, seafoods, and local dishes, with a detailed menu provided in the room.
We were hesitant the first night as we have experienced some poor 'in-house' hotel dining in our travels. The food was well prepared, cooked to order, fresh ingredients, and well presented. I liked the intimate dining space where I could hear the sizzle of the food cooking and enjoy the aromatic scents wafting thru the room. The quiet, cozy dining space also allowed for pleasant dinner conversation with other guests. My favorites dishes were the lemon chicken, tropical salad, and pasta pesto, my partner - the sea bass. It was hard to resist the homemade desserts. I finally broke down the last night as the chocolate cake and ice cream teased me from another table and acquiesced to this treat. We would love to venture out more to dine in Quito on a future visit, however the hotel dining was a very good option.

Overall this was a very good lodging experience. We wanted a centrally located, clean and comfortable hotel. The staff and management really shined here. Service standards were high as was attention to detail. As with any stay, nothing is perfect. I found no faults with this property which warrant a negative comment in this review. Enjoy your stay here and pet Brownie for us!

This is a beautiful colonial-style hotel in the new area of Quito. The rooms are comfy, but the main attraction has to be the wonderful staff -- Gloria went out of her way to make us feel welcome, knew all the guests by name and pointed us to all the best areas to visit -- and Judy, the owner, was incredibly kind and lent us a plug adaptor, brought us up hot water for tea and even posted back to us an errant pair of trousers that we'd accidentally left behind.

Brownie the bunny likes to wander round the lounge and have his ears tickled (but has an amazing knack of disappearing when you want to take his photo!).

Don't forget to check out the little hand-crafted room number plaques and check out the charity shop that was commissioned to make them.

The old town is within easy reach by taxi ride.

The Hostal de la Rabida proved to be an excellent choice for my friend and me for our stay in Quito. It was centrally located for shopping and restaurants, but still quiet from traffic noise. The rooms were comfortable and the breakfasts excellent. I really appreciated the help the manager Gloria gave us in selecting restaurants and shopping. She went above and beyond to secure reservations for us on the tourist train while we were traveling in Mindo. Upon our return she had the reservations arranged. All in all, a great choice for a quiet little hotel with a nice colonial ambiance!
