It is a fantastic, small hotel full of old world charm, right in the heart of the first UNESCO World Heritage City. Within walking distance from the Independence Plaza and many of the historically significant churches and squares, Hotel Patio Andaluz is the perfect base from which to explore. Don’t let guide books make you hesitate about staying in “Old Town”, we loved this well-preserved, Colonial area of Quito.

Behind the uninteresting facade of a 500 year-old house, a beautiful hotel with two large courtyards - one used as dining room and other as a small garden with tables by the cocktail bar has been created. Care and money has been committed to the restorations. Our room overlooking the street was two levels, spacious, and tastefully decorated (downstairs was a lounge area and upstairs a king-size bed and bathroom). The room was air conditioned and also had a large ceiling fan – we did not have any problems with noise and slept well during our three night stay. The staff were extremely friendly and everything from the welcome cocktails to late check-out time was arranged with a smile. The doormen and desk clerks spoke English and willingly answered questions, gave advice, and negotiated with taxi drivers to ensure fair payment.

We enjoyed the standard breakfast buffet each day as it had a good variety of food; however, ordering additional items seemed to cause some confusion. Thankfully, time permitted us to benefit from the hotel’s services including relaxing in one of the lounges located on the second floor around the courtyards (coffee or tea was always available to be taken from the library), picking-up messages from home on the internet, and having a drink with tapas from the bar. We also had a nice, comfortable late dinner at the Hotel Plaza Andaluz while enjoying live, traditional music.

A lot of effort had been made to make “Old Town” safe and attractive while maintaining the character of typical street activity (i.e., vendors, children shining shoes, and women selling candy). We felt safe in “Old Town” but the large police presence reminds you to be aware of your surroundings and valuables; beggars and pickpockets are common. Most local businesses close at 6:00 pm (sun sets prior to 6:30 every day of the year) so make plans and take a taxi (costs less than $5) to dinner at an “Old Town” restaurants. Our suggestions: Café Mosaico (for casual dining in an old house high up on a hill overlooking Old Town - the view is beyond belief), Theatrum (for elegant dining experience inside the Neo-Classical Teatro Sucre) or Mea Cupla (for a special night inside the Archbishop’s Palace overlooking Independence Plaza).

Hotel Patio Andaluz is a great place to stay. It is full of character and Colonial charm – while the location is perfect to explore “Old Town”. Overall, the hotel was excellent.

The hotel was not cheap, but was a really nice place to stay for a couple of nights before we left for the Galapagos.

The staff were very nice and helpful, and spoke excellent English. They organised a transfer for us from the airport. No doubt it cost us slightly more than a standard taxi would have done, but it was well worth the extra couple of $s as we were exhausted from a long flight.

The restauarant was very nice with good food and in a good setting - in the hotel's courtyard. However, the prices were steep compared to nearby restaurants, and there were very few customers when we were there.

The room was large (2 floors plus an indoor balcony overlooking the courtyard) and comfortable. The bed was huge and we slept very well, despite some noise from musicians playing in the restaurant/courtyard area.

We were a little suprised to discover that our breakfast cost an additional $10 each - we had assumed, particularly given the cost of the room, that it would be included in the room price.

The hotel is used to guests leaving in the early hours of the morning for the Galapagos, and they provide continental breakfast very early to accomodate this. (I forget exactly how early, but I think it may have started at about 4am.)

The hotel was in a good location from which to explore the Old City, and also pretty close to the airport so we did not have to get up too early for our flight out.

We stayed for one night after having stayed at The Swissotel on our previous two stays. We had a room which had two levels, which was good and did have an outside window. The comments about no outside window refer to rooms that overlook the internal courtyard. I don't know how I would have felt about one of these rooms as it would probably be a bit darker but our room was good. We also ate in the restaurant which was good. Compared to the Swissotel it definitely feels less of a chain hotel and the location for the old town is unbeatable. However, despite being told we could walk around a night we didn't really feel relaxed enough to do that. If going back I would probably favour the Swissotel as it was cheaper, had a pool and the downside of the location was a $2 taxi ride (Taxi drivers are very dodgy and try to get them to put their meter on or agree a fare before leaving) into the old town.

My husband and I stayed at this hotel for two nights before our Galapagos trip and one following. On the first two nights we stayed in room 208 this had two floors as previously mentioned by others we did not find this inconvenient at all but very charming. It had two beds one up stairs and one down with a balcony overlooking the restaurant, on our return we had room 203, this also had two floors overlooking the street to the front. Downstairs was a lounge area and upstairs a bed and bathroom. I loved both sets of accommodation, did not find either too noisey and slept very well in both. The staff were extremely friendly and I could not fault the service we had welcome cocktails on both of our stays (very interesting combinations). The breakfasts were great loads of choice. We also had evening meals here, which were lovely no problems the food was very nice. I didn't find it anymore expensive than a meal in England. Quito itself is a lovely place to visit with numerous churches and places of interest. This was a lovely hotel in the old town of Quito with old world charm, if you don't want this stay at a Hilton they are standard all over the World. I would definitely stay here again.

We stayed for 2 nights in September 08 and were very impressed with the beautiful courtyard where the restaurant and bars are located.
Staff were very helpful and we found the service excellent.
However because the rooms are on two levels, elderly or disabled people may find it difficult to climb the stairs (especially at altitude!). Beware- the timber floors are very slippery!
We loved this old area of Quito and were glad we stayed here rather than the more modern part of the city which is really like any other city in the world.
