My husband and I arrived at the Hacienda after climbing Cotopaxi. This place is heavenly. Gabriel, Patty and Mauricio are the most gracious hosts and made us feel like part of the family. Gabriel's comment on our arrival was "this is your house". I wish we had stayed at the hacienda during our 5 day climbing trip. The best part was i learned to ride a horse which was most enjoyable. Hacienda La Alegria is truly a peaceful, beautiful and spacious retreat for the heart and soul.

I spent two days at Hacienda La Alegria in the summer of 2010, and still find myself fantasizing about when I might be able to go back. I was the only guest for my first day there, which made for an interesting experience - the rest of the family was out of town, so it was just me and Gabriel. But on the trail and at the house, he was good at providing a balance of conversation, which gave me a lot of insight into Ecuadorian society, and also quiet time to read and reflect. More importantly, the hacienda is near beautiful places to ride - the scenery was breathtaking. I had been on a horse several times before but never had formal lessons, and Gabriel gave me enough instruction that I felt comfortable trotting and even cantering for parts of two long (4-6 hour) rides. The food was delicious, and the Hacienda is also a working dairy farm, so you can watch the cows being milked.

Such a warm welcome as we arrived and were shown to our room by Bob & Melaine. As it was our honeymoon, they arranged a champagne lunch for us on the terrace. This hacienda is gorgeous, so quiet and peaceful set in beautiful gardens very well looked after! We could have sat there for hours watching the humming birds!
It was such a shame we only stayed for one night as the place was so peaceful and relaxing...
Our room was very spacious, with two large beds. Bathroom was one of the best we've seen on our trip around Ecuador, great shower & hairdryer, ha ha. The most special thing about this hacienda which distinguished it from any other was the outstanding large window and view out to the mountains. As it's set in the 'Avenue of Volcano's'....
The only down side is the food was not included and you have no other option but to eat at the hacienda, as there's nothing really around it to walk too.
We thought the food was expensive here for what we got, it was 36 dollars for lunch (cheese sandwich each with some pretsel's), same price for the evening meal also, which you just get given and not asked what you want! No menu, prices etc shown to you! Quite awkward as we sat round the table with other guests and we felt like we had to eat the food even though we didnt even like it or fancy it, ha ha.
Shame we didnt get chance to go riding here, as the horse riding is thing to to do....

Gabriel-Owner, Owner at Hacienda La Alegria, responded to this review, 20 July 2011
We are glad you enjoyed your stay despite the inconvenience that you were charged by mistake for a box lunch. In 10 years of business this the first time this happens. lunch boxes are only for rides of 4 or more hours and usually not charged for. Our set prices for lunch or dinner is for a nice and hearty 3-4 course meal. We get lots of compliments for our food... Hope to have you visiting us again and as discussed earlier I will be sending the refund soon. Thanks for your review. Best wishes and safe travels. Carolina Espinosa

La Alegria : the Happiness... Truly. This farm is so startlingly beautiful it seems straight out of a fairy tale. The rooms are absolutely beautiful with plenty of space, beautiful appointments, views of the Andean surrounds, but still, I wouldn't recommend spending much time indoors because the rest of the hacienda cannot be missed. Wander around enjoying the dozens of varieties of flowers growing on the property, visit with the slightly grumpy alpacas, the 48+ beautiful, fit, happy horses and the dairy cows. Don't miss the horseback ride through the surrounding land, a glimpse into Ecuadorian life from the back of a pleasant, easy trekking horse should not be missed. Thank you to Gabriel and Catalina for the gracious smiles, hospitality, impeccable English and lovely meals. I would love to return one day.

We arrived in the dark and were pleased by the lovely big and clean rooms. When we woke up in the morning, we were amazed by how gorgeous the surroundings were. We met the proprietor and his family at breakfast in a room that wouldn't have looked out of place in a stately home. Breakfast was plentiful and excellent. My friends didn't speak any Spanish when we started the trip and were worried about conversing with the proprietor but his English was fantastic and they need not have worried. The Hacienda has dozens of horses which for a horse-lover like me make for an excellent trip. All in all, I was thrilled to start my first trip to Ecuador in the Hacienda Alegria and would definitely visit again.

Big clean rooms with a sweeping view of the ranch's fields and pastures. This is a working dairy ranch with cattle and horses grazing right outside your door. The lush gardens around the house were alive with birds. Enchanting. We enjoyed an afternoon horseback ride through the countryside around the house, a very relaxing experience. The main house is old and charming, built in 1911 and after a delicious dinner we retired to the fireplace in the main house for drinks and talk with our hosts until late in the evening. We felt like we were at home with old friends. Both the dinner and breakfast were traditional Ecuadoran fare and were delicious and filling.

Room Tip: Get up at 4 AM to watch the dairy milking

Everything about this place is done right -- from the meals in their dining room, to the mountain views from the guest rooms, to the way that Gabriel and Paty make you feel right at home. Gabriel met us when we arrived and treated us like old friends -- gave us a tour of his garden, took us by the cows being milked, invited us to accompany him as he collected cheese from a cavelike cellar a short walk from the main house. It's a working farm, and was and felt authentic. He and his wife have the perfect personalities for B&B owners -- warm, relaxed, entertaining, friendly. Our room was large, very nicely furnished with old (farm relics) and new (great bed, large tiled bathroom). We enjoyed a great view of the Andes out the picture window in our room. Good and varied food and good conversation at mealtimes. They accommodated a vegetarian diet. Took a horseback ride with Gabriel and his stable manager one day, a hike with one of the staff another day. Paty even drove us back to Quito because she had to go into town the afternoon we left. Stayed two nights, ate all our meals there. Worth every penny.

Room Tip: Go horseback riding with Gabriel.
