Located less than an hour outside Quito, the Hacienda La Alegria lets you experience Ecuador at its best. The original home was built in 1911 and the living room with its massive fireplace and the many antiques makes you instantly comfortable, like you just came home. Just a few years ago 10 guest rooms were added that are decorated in rich warm colors, beautiful wood floors, locally made furntiure and large bay windows that frame a stunning view of the Ecuadorian countryside. Some of the second floor rooms have woodstoves and there is also a guest living room where you may lounge, warm yourself in evenings next to the fireplace or step out onto the deck where there is a jacuzzi.

Hacienda La Alegria is located in the heart of chagra (cowboy) country and they maintain a stable of 60 plus horses. Gabriel, your host and grandson of the couple who built the Hacienda, was a polo player and in 2008 along with a few friends rode from the southern border of Ecuador near Peru to the northern border near Columbia. Whether you are an experienced rider or a novice Gabriel will match you with the perfect mount and make sure you are comfortable. They offer many different riding options starting with simple day trips or extended trips such as the Avenue of the Volcanos ride. Check their website for the scheduled trips or if you have a group contact Gabriel and he will work with you to create your own trip.

Haven't stayed overnite at the hacienda but have gone horseback riding a few times including one overnite. The owner Gabriel, his family and his staff are all simply excellent people to spend time with. I've had numerous meals and the food is always tasty and healthy. The hacienda has a charming rustic aspect and I've wanted to spend more time there every time I go. It's only a hour or so out of Quito and since I live there I haven't yet taken advantage. The horseback riding operation is very well managed - the horses are fine animals very well-treated - which isn't always the case in Ecuador. You can check them out as individuals on the Hacienda's website. The grandest part of the experience is the pristine vistas one gets within an hour's ride of the hacienda -- snow covered peaks on a clear day -- it's like stepping back in time -- breathtaking really. And, though you'll sign a waiver to ride, it's not like places in the states where you ride single file and hardly ever go faster than a walk - here the horses will run like the wind -- for horse enthusiasts this place would be hard to beat.

We went to ride horses, see volcanos, visit Indian markets, and enjoy the atmosphere, and delighted in the warm hospitality, friendship, opportunities to learn the ways of the people of the paramo, the Ecuadoran Andes. The setting is beautiful. The owners are fantastic, always looking for ways to surprise and please guests. The staff is knowledgeable and responsive, and the horses well-trained. What more could we want? We're sure to return!

Room Tip: All the rooms are great.

A year ago I decided I had to go to Ecuador to participate in the multiple day Avenue of the Volcanoes Ride, one of the horseback riding trips offered by the Hacienda la Alegria. My friends asked "what are you thinking? You haven't ridden in well over 30 yrs. Andy why Ecuador?". Well, I was thinking that Ecuador would be very pretty, the ride would be an adventure like none other and the Hacienda la Alegria would be gracious and beautiful. I was not disappointed! The accomodations and grounds at the Hacienda were wonderful as were the hosts, staff and horses. And the experience of riding in the mountains and valleys around the volcanoes was totally exhilarating! Loved it!

Room Tip: All rooms havebig windows and great views. Some have woodburning stoves which are really nice for the cooler mountain evenings.

Went with my wife and friends! The location is amazing if you want to enjoy the highlands of Ecuador! The rooms are big and clean, if you can, ask for a room in the second floor because the view is amazing. The owners interact with you at all times and make sure your stay goes well. Highly recommended! Will go back for sure!
