If you are looking for unique horseback riding through the breathtaking mountains of Ecuador and a wonderful atmosphere, you should not miss staying at this Hacienda. The horses are excellent, the views incredible and, most importantly, this family-run place makes you feel truly at home in a very subtle manner.

We extended our stay by a couple of days. The food is excellent, the rooms are wonderfully cosy and have stunning views - and Gabriel and Patty are amazing people to meet.

We felt truly welcome and enjoyed every minute in this very poetic gem of Ecuador.
Thank you so much for those very special days.

Room Tip: The rooms are all lovely with wonderful views.

Hacienda La Alegria is a truly unique and beautiful place. Not only is the building is beautiful and the rooms comfortable, but the food (made by the family's cook of 20 years) is the best we had in Ecuador. Gabriel was a wonderful host! He made us feel as if we were guests of the family, not guests staying at a hotel. He took time to stay with us throughout our entire visit, explaining the workings of the farm and the culture of Ecuador. The staff was also super friendly. Not just nice, but they all made us feel at home. It was fantastic putting on "wellies" and tromping through the mud around the farm, watching the cattle be round up as they passed through colonial gates to get from one pasture to another, the llamas and alpacas running in circles to protect the baby from the dog. Not to mention learning how to rope a horse and watching a Chagra demonstration. We also toured to entire dairy and met his fantastic neighbor who is growing the biggest cabbages we have ever seen!

As we did not go on a horse riding trip, we spent a lot of time getting to know Gabriel and at the Hacienda. The rooms all have a fantastic view of the surrounding mountains and the grounds are green and are nicely decoarted. The beds are comfortable and the bathrooms are a great size. One of our parties rooms had a fireplace and it was so cozy and nice to relax next to it. The old house is romantic and fantastic. On our last night we met Patty, Gabriel's wife and she is fantastic.

We cannot express enough what a wonderful time we had at Hacienda La Alegria. Thank you to Patty and Gabriel for teaching us so much about life on a Hacienda, great company, fantastic food and wonderful wine. Even if you do not ride the horses, Hacienda La Alegria is absolutely worth a visit.

Room Tip: The rooms with two beds are larger and might have a fireplace!

I just spent a week at Hacienda La Alegria with my wife and eleven-year-old daughter and we richly enjoyed each day. We were inexperienced horseback riders, but the patient family members and ranch hands had us enjoying the beautiful Ecuadorian countryside on a saddle in no time. The family members are delightful and the staff are all friendly and helpful. The food is marvelous, especially the homemade soups. The view from our room of the mountains was something we never tired of, and the ranch has so many beautiful nooks and garden spots for photography. If you are an artist, BRING YOUR SKETCHPAD! This is truly a place with old-world charm and great hospitality. They do have WI-FI, but honestly, the Hacienda La Alegria is a perfect opportunity to unplug and get away from all the distracting screens in your life. This is a great place if you're an experienced rider or a beginner, and is perfect for families or just couples. We have so many great memories and photos from this week. It was perfect for our summer vacation.

After traveling around Ecuador for a week, we spent three wonderful days at Hacienda La Alegria. Although it is only an hour from Quito, it is an entirely different world. The farm is so peaceful with incredible views of the mountains and beautiful gardens. We spent most of our time simply relaxing and enjoying the horses, llamas, and puppies. We also took our first horseback ride - what a cool way to see the mountains. Everyone was very friendly and helpful, and made sure we knew the basics of riding. The rooms were very large and comfortable with the feel of a five star hotel, but in the middle of the Andes. All of the staff were wonderful and always smiling. Many also spoke English, which made it easy since our Spanish is limited. The food was also wonderful and gringo friendly! After a week without salads, it was great to enjoy the fresh produce. Thank you Gabriel and Patty for a wonderful stay.

When you visit Ecuador, most of the tourists come to the Galapagos and some also visit Quito and the colonial downtown but you should also visit Hacienda La Alegría. The place is right in the middle of the Andes, a little chilly but you need to bring warm clothes. We went horseback riding and we had a lot of fun ; the owner himself led the way. The mountains, the river, the birds and the whole place impressed us. The owner´s wife oversees the kitchen , we had a delicious breakfast and some great home cooking.

Room Tip: Ask for the rooms on the second floor, they have a great view of the mountains.

I can honestly say this was probably the BEST place I have EVER stayed in all my travels. Just driving to the main building, one gets a feeling of comfort. Once at the property, I was greeted by puppies, cowboys and smiles only to enter a room with a view that chased away any ounce of stress I had in my body. This place was amazing. The owners are delightful, and the food is incredible. The hospitality was top-notch. They have done an amazing job with the property, the rooms and the activities. I cannot recommend the Hacienda La Alegria enough. I was there with a group tour, "Active South America".

Room Tip: I don't think there is a bad room. Rooms from the top floor have even better views (if that is p...

Even to Ecuatorians, who live between volcanoes, this is one of the most paradisaical Hacienda in the region. Familiy fun never stops, fantastic service, great Andean food, responsible horse riding, cozy beds and warm chimney rooms. If haciendas could be catalogued with stars, this could be a Five Star Hacienda.
