“Not the place to stay for a good nights sleep”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 August 2013

We were put in this hotel as part of a trip to the Galapagos arranged by intrepid travel. On first appearance the hotel looks charming and has many original features however there are several areas for improvement. The main issue is that all the rooms are off the main courtyard and the rooms only have a thin wooden door with open panels that do not block any sound at all. This means any other guests returning late at night or starting tours early in the morning and talking in the courtyard is easily heard in the rooms and will wake you.
We were also troubled with a very noisy, squeaky bed that woke both of us when either of us turned over during the night.
As other reviewers have said, the breakfast is woeful, scrambled eggs and a rather odd tasting roll is all you get as part of the main breakfast. You can pay extra for bacon etc but this should be standard. It is a real shame as the breakfast room has many original features that the food does not live up to.
On a positive note it is very well located for the old town with the main square a five minute walk. Although this area is busy during the day it is deserted at night.

This hotel is well located in the old town and has a charming interior courtyard. Breakfast is served in an underground area which a bit gloomy. The rooms are a decent size, but quite utilitarian and dark; some of the bathrooms are tiny. Some of the staff are very friendly and helpful, others much less so. The courtyard area is a pleasant place to sit and read, but twice during our stay it was dominated by tour groups which treated it as their private briefing area, which was a pity. If you are looking for a basic well located hotel in old town it's definitely worth considering.

Best location, very central to everything in the old town and good security. Don't expect much English from the night reception staff though. The rooms are basic but clean, many dont have windows. The breakfast was woeful and the service even worse. Stale bread, dodgy eggs and after asking 3 times for milk for my coffee, it never arrived and we gave up and left. The breakfast experience left a very bad impression but overall the hotel is reasonable value if you're just looking for a secure, comfortable place to sleep and not much else.

Stayed here for almost two weeks (pre and after Galapagos). An old building (squeaky floors & beds & dated bathrooms), full of character with its private Spanish style courtyard, and beautifully located in the historic centre of Quito. Walking distance to many historical sites and plazas. Lunch time eating not a problem, however not a lot open at night and no night life to speak of. Staff are super friendly. Has WIFI and a couple of old PC available for guests, some rooms have safes. Clean, secure and relaxed place, although it could be a bit noisy when new guests arrive very late at night. Good value for money. Rates include a simple brekky each day.

Beautiful building in a great location in the historic center within a very short walk of major plazas and historic churches, restaurants, public transit and more. Enclosed courtyard at the center of the hotel makes a great meeting place but rooms facing the courtyard are very dark and noise can be a problem. The front desk staff is wonderful and very helpful, although some personnel have limited English. The breakfast is nothing to write home about but the front desk will arrange a bag breakfast for early flights if you make arrangements the night before. It is not at all luxurious but has great character and rooms were very clean. We stayed 9 nights over a 3 week period and by the end of the trip it felt like coming home after all our excursions around Ecuador. Highly recommended as long as you realize this is a budget accommodation.

Room Tip: Rooms on the 3rd level around an upper patio are the best choice as they are much quieter than rooms...

Stayed here off and on since 2006 and keeping coming back. Low key very old colonial bldg (1700s) nice staff good location and more hot water now. Remodeled patio for lounging but rooms near can be noisy. Still the best.

Remember if you choose to stay here that you should try to get room on second floor. The rooms are larger and away from the pleasant but noisy courtyard where everyone gathers in the evening. The included breakfast is literally 1roll, juice, coffe and runny eggs. Helpful pleasant staff and great location and clean.
