“Booked for 3 nights, cancelled after one night”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 February 2009

First off, make sure you bring ear plugs -- the 24/7 NOISE was unrelenting! Secondly, the guy who was at the front desk was somewhat rude to me. I almost passed out because of altitude sickness while checking in, and he did not even show a bit of compassion with what I was experiencing. Good thing, the rest of the people and the owners were very friendly. I understand that this place is not in the safest part of town, that's why they have dogs roaming around the hostel, but the barking just goes over-the-top. I actually feared of being mauled by those dogs.

There were good sides though: It's a mere 10-minute walk to the Historic Old Town (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), and is accessible to public transit. Plus, the rates are cheap! A mere 9 dollars per night for a private single room with your own bathroom. They also have free internet connection in the lobby. The Ecuadorian owners were nice -- they even loaned me an alarm clock when I needed to wake up at 5am for my Galapagos trip. I wasn't able to try out their breakfast though.

Verdict: I'm not sure if I'd like to stay here again, but if I can't find better deals out there, I might have too again!

This comment has caused me a lot of fun because the issue that has to do with our dogs. First our pets are not large breeds are small dogs who are accustomed to tourists. Since they were little they have lived in the hostel and are not aggressive and much less they can maul any part of your body. This part is very funny. Second, dogs are not security guards; they are part of our family. Throughout our lives we have always had pets and also almost 100% of Ecuadorian families have a pet at home.
About noise, we have this problem but the noise is coming from the traffic of cars and not from our hostel, so this problem is out of our control and we cannot solve it. But for those who are light sleepers, we mentioned this problem in our official web sites.
About the Check In, all customers are treated equally and procedure. And the procedure is as follows: 1) We make you fill out a registration card, 2) We proceed to collect the money of stay, 3) We give you a bill that it includes information of the hostel as well, 4) Then we proceed to explain the operation of the hostel, 5) We take you to the room 6) We give you an explanation of what is inside the room and how it works. Unfortunately, being a budget accommodation we do not offer services such bell boys, valet parking and similar, for which our customers have to carry their own luggage, park their own vehicles, etc.

As you said you paid USD 9 (currently from $ 11.50; 8/30/2011) for a private room with private bath, TV (local channels), WIFI, internet, security lockers, bilingual staff, daily housekeeping, 24 / 7 hot water, including taxes as 12% IVA and 10% Services. From my opinion $ 9 is too low for the amount of include services you got.
It is unfortunate that you do not recommend our hostel 100% but that's the beauty of democracy, people can choose. What you do not like other people may fascinate.

The hostel is located in San Blas, few minutes walk into old town and close to the metrobuses to get you into new town. We had looked at a few hostels in old town and this was by far the cheapest one we could find.

For $17 pn you can get a private double (inc bathroom) which is of a reasonable size and was reasonably clean. Don't believe the Lonely Planet, there's no cable TV in the rooms (only in the reception area) and annoyingly you don't get remotes for your TV sets.

The hostel is split into two blocks. Try and get a room in the block where the reception is and away from the main street. The owners own dogs in the other block and more often than not that block STINKS of damp dog. The dogs are free to roam around and jump on guests - would have been ok if they were clean!

Breakfast is included on the roof terrace and includes a scrambled egg, a piece of bread, some fruit and tea/coffee. Pretty decent. There's also a kitchen but it's poorly stocked.

Internet is included BUT you can use the machines between 9 & 11am and 5 &10pm only for 15min (although the 2 machines were occupied for much longer). You are not allowed to make internet calls through skype however there's free WiFi so not sure how they can really enforce this if you have your own laptop?!

The last thing is the staff are a mixed bunch. Some are great and helped us call the airlines to confirm our flights; whilst others are rude & couldn't be bothered with us.

No discounts for long term stays!

If you can get a room away from the street, you will experience much less noise. The water was hot in the evenings when we took showers. The roof top deck is nice, but most people hung out in the lobby. Free internet access was a nice bonus. We found this location ideal to walk to the Mariscal or the central plaza.

Chicago Hostel is great for many reasons. Friendly english speaking staff, lovely large double rooms wtih private bathrooms, consistently hot water, great breakfast...I could go on and on. Location is excellent. Safe area at night time (compared with the new town).

We wanted to extend our stay on our first time there but they couldn-{t fit us in. The guy in reception called another hotel and arranged for us to get a room there as our spanish was very rusty.

Luckily on our second round they fit us in - yay!

On our last day, the owner came and got us at 5am when the taxi arrived AND confirmed price before we left, That was above and beyond what they needed to do,.

They did laundry for us at a reasonable price.

I been in Hostel Chicago for over two months now. It is situated in the old town(it is safer than the new town), which is declared by the UN as a world heritage. Every morning, I take my breakfast in the terrace surrounded by the Andes, the beautiful Cathedral, and the amazing colonial buildings around the hostel.
The ambiance of the hostel is of the best quality. It is run by an Ecuadorian family. They are simply great.
I am drinking well and very cheaply. The price of the accommodation is extremly affordable as well. The cleanness of the place is impeccable.
Now, I am really having a hard time to leave. I never regret a day while I am here. This place have enriched my experience in South America.
