“Cozy and friendly staff”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 May 2010

The small hostel is conveniently located near old town and have great staff that are extremely helpful. We arrived at 9 am and they checked us in immediately no questions asked. The rooms are small and clean and for $20 or so for a private room a great value. For an extra 3 dollars you get the superior room with cable TV and great view of the Basillica - we stayed for 3 days.

We stayed at the Chicago Hostel for two nights in late March 2010. The staff are really friendly and helpful, especially Tatiana who is fantastic.

Our room was Room 1, very comfortable beds, and very clean. The bathroom is super clean, with reliable hot water. It was a little noisy with traffic on the street, but most rooms in Quito would have this as its a very busy city.

They are not currently serving breakfast, but thats fine as there are loads of places you can get breakfast close to the hostel and they are very cheap. At the hostel you can buy beer, water etc quite cheaply, and the kitchen upstairs is very clean, so great if you want to cook your own meal.

We felt very welcomed and secure at this hostel. There was free wifi, accesible from the rooms (well Room 1 anyway) and also in the lounge downstairs and the beautiful roof top terrace (great views of the city).

The old town centre is only a few minutes walk away, and taxis to Mariscal are only a few dollars.

Overall a great hostel - its clean, safe and friendly.

We stayed at the Chicago Hostel on 3 different occassions. It is run by a family who are very friendly and helpful. The rooms are basic and very clean. Some rooms could do with an uplift but for $15 a night for a double room with private bathroom and hot shower it was excellent value. The rooms facing the street are extremely noisy from the traffic.
The $1 breakfast is good value and the drinks are cheap! The hostel also provides transport to and from the bus and airport terminals at a fair rate. I would recommend this hostel to all backpackers and would stay there again if I were in Quito.

This hotel is perfect if you are staying in the Old Town in Quito. Its a 5 minute walk from all the main attractions in the Old Town. Its really clean and well kept. OK the staff are not the friendliest in town but if you can see through that, its a great place to stay.

We payed $8.50 for a private, twin room with TV and the cleanest bathroom yet!!!

Breakfast was $1 dollar, you get one scrambled egg, one roll, a bowl of fruit and a coffee - now you can´t complain at that can you!!!!

We stayed in room 15 with a great view. I belive some of the room don´t have windows, so make sure you ask for one with a view.

I would highly recommend this hotel if you are not looking for somewhere with a party atmosphere but you are looking for a clean, nice place to stay.

Please note its not and doesn´t have a pub either so don´t get mislead by that either! !!!

Its a $3 dollar cab ride to the New Town where all the bars, clubs and restaurants are. Stay in the New Town is this is what you are after.

My husband and I stayed at this hostel for days at the start of our RTW travels. We started with a room with a shared bathroom on the 1st night due to availability. The next night we moved to a room with a private bath. When our friends joined us a few days later, we moved up to a dorm with a private bath. All rooms were clean and nicely decorated. The only complaint is that the dorm room shower went between hot and cold in the mornings.

The hostel seems to be a family-run operation with a common area downstairs used by everyone including the 2 dogs. We truly enjoyed the dogs and we thought they were well-mannered. A couple of the managers seemed gruff in the beginning, but warmed up to us once it looked like we were attempting to speak Spanish. Attempting a few words goes a long way in this country and at this hostel.

There is free wifi, but it is terribly slow in the evenings. We went to New Town to use their faster connection. At the time of our stay, we got complimentary breakfast, but this was changing when we left. The hostel prices were lowered, but breakfast is no longer included. The top terrace provided a gorgeous view of the Andes mountains so even without breakfast, one should go up and take a look. We used the kitchen a couple of times to cook dinners and it was clean and stocked with plate, utensils, pots, and a few spices. We thought Hostel Chicago was a great deal for our money.

I found the most of the staff excellent. They were friendly, helpful, and many spoke english. On the first morning, I was 20 minutes late for breakfast. The woman made me breakfast, anyway. The location was good - close to the Old Town but not too far from the New Town. The room was basic and windowless but I had my own bathroom. For $10 per night, it was good value. The only negative comments concerns one staff member, who looked like a fatter version of Hugo Chavez and was twice as dictatorial. On the morning I due to leave, I was using the wi fi in reception. I have a laptop, so I was not taking up either of the 2 computers in reception and was costing the hostel nothing. In front of the other guests, he told me to turn off my computer as I had checked out and was no longer a guest. Other than that, the hostel was very good. However, it could be improved if wi-fi were available in the rooms and not just in reception.

We stayed at the Chicago hostel for 5 days in march 2009. We were lucky enough to get room #8 which had a balcony and amazing view of the city. Our room was very clean, had a private bathroom that was also really clean. We were impressed with the included breakfast of croissant, fruit, eggs, coffee/tea all of which was included in the nightly price of $17.

The only drawback is that it is a bit of a walk to the old town (10 minutes or so). We would definitely stay here again if we could get the same room some of the interior rooms looked a little darker since they had no windows.
