“Great location, welcoming staff and beautiful decor”
Reviewed 18 November 2012

We spent 3 nights at this hotel which was recommended by the owners of the Hacienda La Alegria where we had been staying. As noted in other reviews the hotel was originally a home that has been converted to a hotel. The decor is beautiful with many antiques and wooden carved doors. Prices for the rooms vary based on size and walking to the third or fourth floor can take your breath away. As people have noted the rooms may be small and the showers somewhat narrow, but if you want super luxury stay at the Hotel Plaza Grande just a block away and pay 2 or 3 times as much as you will here. On our return from the Amazon we stayed in room 26 which overlooks the street and at first we thought might be noisy but they have installed windows which block out the sound.

This is a great location because you are within walking distance of most of the sites in the historic old city. There are many good restaurants nearby and we found breakfast at the hotel to be very pleasant and well prepared. The will cook your eggs anyway you like and have a good selection fresh fruit if you just ask. One evening after dinner we happened on a local dance troupe that was performing traditional Andian dances in an open square. The great part we were the only tourists but the locals were very welcoming and made room for us to sit and enjoy the show which cost a $1.

Most of the staff at the hotel have limited English but then I have limited Spanish, somehow we managed to communicate. We went from here to the Napo Wildlife Center and they held much of our luggage for us at no charge until our return. We had to leave at 4 AM to catch our flight home and when we can out of our room the doorman was there waiting to take our lugguage downstairs. When we went out the front door and the cab they had arranged was waiting for us, the doorman loaded our bags and we were off.

Room Tip: Check the room first if worried about size and be sure to stay on floor two if the altitude is getti...

We spent a few nights here on our arrival in Equador. It is a beautiful converted old colonial house that has been done with style. The staff are attentive and friendly and good breakfasts. Quiet and unassuming. My only con would that it is probably overpriced, which meant that we were almost the only guests. Having said that, if you have some cash to splash, probably one of the nicest places to stay in Quito.

Behind an unpretentious blue door lies one of the hidden gems of Quito. Hotel El Relicario del Carmen, just 2 blocks from the Presidential Palace, is a beautifully restored building converted into a boutique hotel. The rooms are a delight to look at and the staff during our stay was attentive to our every need. The Doorman, Tarquino, was very helpful to us. If you want the sameness of a chain hotel don't come here. If you look for unique experiences and personalized service this is the place.

This very old building has been restored with love and exquisite taste. Lots of wood, wonderful antique furniture and interesting pictures and artefacts. We didn't particularly like the 1st room we were given so we were shown 2 others and opted for one on the top floor which had a splendid view. BUT don't have one at the top unless you are quite fit! A very kind member of staff took my very heavy bag up for me. I have read some of the other reviews about room sizes. Ours was a good size, the bathroom wasn't big but perfectly fine. Remember that it is an old building that has been remodelled to meet modern needs, and the most important thing to me is that it is so full of character and history. A lot of modern hotels have very small rooms and bathrooms....I know which I'd rather stay in any day! Breakfast was delicious and beautifully served in the lovely dining room. Excellent location for the sights of the old City (walking distance) and staff very helpful re where to go and restaurants etc. We had a very early flight but this was no problem, they gave us an alarm call and they had made us coffee and croissant at 4.45 am, and the taxi they booked for us came well on time! Finally, it was quiet, very secure, very clean and the bed was comfortable. Give yourself a real treat and stay here, you won't regret it.

Room Tip: Be aware that there is no lift. You might want a room on the ground or first floors if you are not...

I spent the night at hotel Relicario del Carmen with my husband. We had high expectations after all the reviews we had read, but in fact we got disappointed. Even though the hotel was empty, we were given a tiny little room with a ridiculous bathroom. We also didn't find this hotel particularly friendly and welcoming. I wouldn't recommend it.

An ordinary door in an ordinary street - what a surprise when we went inside: so much character, lovely personal service, good food, spotlessly clean room.

If you are looking for a small , personal hotel, which oozes character, in the centre of the old colonial quarter in Quito , this is it . We stayed there twice on the same trip , in 2 different rooms and found the accomodation very comfortable and quiet . You feel you are back in old colonial Quito , surrounded by gorgeous wooden furniture and art, and the staff have an " old world charm " and are gracious and warm . Beautiful fresh flowers everywhere .
The room we chose initially, on the 4th floor, was small but had an adjacent landing/ sitting area with stunning views of the city, whilst the second ground floor room was more spacious and so tranquil .

Room Tip: Just check the size of the ensuites before accepting a room as some are smaller than others .
