Most people stay in Quito and only make a daytrip to the monument that marks the Middle of the World. However, what people don't know is that there is so much more to do in and around San Antonio de Pichincha. It is definitely worth it to stay a few days in San Antonio itself.
If, like me, you are looking for a place away from the hustle and bustle of Quito, where you will find beautiful nature and tranquility, I'd recommend you'd stay at Rancho Alegre.
The friendly owner, Roberto, will welcome you as a member of the family. The Rancho has pools and sauna facilities for you to pamper yourself. If you travel with kids, this is the perfect place for you to relax and for them to play as the Rancho has ample space and facilities for the youngsters to roam around and entertain themselves.
The rooms in the hosteria are very charming. Perhaps a little on the dark side, but that only adds to the warmth and coziness of it all.
In my days at the Rancho I visited not only the Equatorial Monument, but also the In Situ Inti Ñan Museum, Pululahua Crater and its Geobotanical reserve, Ruins of Rumicucho, Village of Calacalí, the market of Otavalo and I went for a horseback ride to the Cate Quilla Hill.
You are still very close to Quito, which is just a 30 minute ride away, but at the same time you are also in the perfect spot to explore North Ecuador and visit the famous market of Otavalo.
In short, it's worthwhile spending a few days at Rancho Alegre in San Antonio, not only is it the perfect base to explore the area, but also for the nature and peace.
