“THE best hostel in Cuenca”
Reviewed 27 December 2012

We arrived in Cuenca some time in November 2012 planning to stay for 2 nights but ended up staying 5. Apart from the city being super beautiful, the hostel is what kept us wanting to discover more. The owners and the staff make you feel like you´re at home with a family rather than staying at a hostel or hotel. Then again, the way it´s designed is so social that it´s very easy to make friends from all over the world. Apart from that, the cleanliness is top notch and our room in particular was very warm and the bed cosy. Also, the showers were always very hot and powerful, just like we like ém. And you may use the kitchen and the lounge area as you please and also have as many herbal teas as you like! The hostel is also in a really quaint area of Cuenca and very near tourist sites and artsy cafes. Would definitely return, no questions asked.

We arrived here at about 7.30 in the morning after a hellish overnight bus from Quito. We were both feeling really awful and feeling the effects of a dodgy meal in Quito the evening before. We stayed for 3 nights during which Luis and Dolores were so friendly, walking me to the bakery when I asked where I could buy some food and even making us mint tea from the mint in the garden. It was the perfect place to recover with a peaceful seating area, lovely garden and fast wifi. There´s also free mineral water from a cooler.

We agreed at the phone (we are spanish mother tongue) a 4 nights stay for 2 rooms, one for a couple and the other single, but at the arrival there was just a room for the three of us all together. So, that was the first inconvenience. The room had no wardrobe, there was not even an hanger in the bathroom where to hang the towel, and was looking not really clean. So we stayed there and the following day moved to another one little bit better. The new room had private bathroom but still no wardrobe and no mirror at the washbasin, so you can imagine it was pretty hard when I had to shave. The double bed had a very soft mattress and we couldn't move much since the frames were doing a strange noise like creaking. There is not tv and they don't clean the room daily. We asked for it and generously the owners did it but the cleaning and arrangement of the room was not included in the service. They have a nice garden and the owners are very helpful and genuine persons but overall we have to admit we had much more expectations reading the reviews and we felt like disappointed.

We had a lovely 2 night stay by the incredibly welcoming husband and wife that ran the hostel. There was a bit of a mix up with our room as we were given an upgrade to a large double with ensuite which had a nice hot water shower and towels; it was very nice. The couple gave us the room for the original price we agreed upon which was very generous of them. Breakfast wasn't included but was available for only $2.50 which was eggs, bread (with jam and butter), juice and coffee, tea or hot chocolate. Overall the hostel was beautiful, the staff very friendly and helpful and I would highly recommend it!

We were recommended this hostel from people we met in Vilcabamba (see review of Rendez-vous - a great choice) so we were confident. We sent an email for a reservation that wasnt replied to, so when we arrived in the early evening and were buzzing but getting no response we were a little nervous. But eventually Dolores the owner appeared from another door nearby, she was very relaxed and had a room for us (not sure whether reserved or good fortune) and gave us a room with private bathroom for same rate quoted for shared so we were pleased. As it was night I wanted to grab a quick dinner close by and Dolores arranged for a restaurant across the rode to deliver dinner - for $2 it was fantastic and I ate there each night (I think it was called Don Shamuku - owner is a great guy).
Breakfast costs extra at the hostel and we ordered the night before - the next morning they said they couldnt do it so that was a little disappointing but no big deal. There is a kitchen for use - its a little small and was generally disorganised and a bit dirty compared to others we have come across.
The room we had was ok - a strange shape and design. As the rooms are around an open courtyard they are a bit on the cool side and could be noisy but thankfully most of our fellow guests were mellow. While the rooms and hostel in general werent dirty they did feel like they could use an extra going over. Hot water could be a little hit and miss but were great when working.
The location is good being a street away from the river and a 10-15min walk to the main plaza.
Dolores and Luis were genial hosts although not always on hand, they dont speak English but my very ordinary Spanish was enough to get by as they tend to understand and are very relaxed.
All in all a solid value choice.

I first have to say that we only stayed at Villa Del Rosario for one night. So this review comes from a small sample size.

Our first impressions of the hostel were great. It is very clean. It is in a lovely old building with a nice courtyard. The hostess, Delores, seemed lovely. It's well located in Cuenca. There's a kitchen. The WIFI there works really well. And the price is excellent.

So why the 'but'? Well, three reasons, all small but they affected our stay.

1) - We were repeatedly told by the host that the showers were hot all day long. My wife did enjoy a nice hot shower, but when I went to use the same one only 20 mins later, it stayed chilly the whole time - not quite cold, but far from warm.

2) - When we were there the hostel was empty. We were two of only three guests in the entire place. This did make it nice and quiet, but also a little erie in a way, and it stripped the place of the atmosphere that comes from social camaraderie.

3) - The bed was too small. We asked for a bed for two and were given a room with one small double bed and a bunk bed. We tried sleeping together in the bed, but with the thick sheets tucked in (it was a really cold evening) and a mattress that sagged slightly in the middle we were constricted and rolled on top of each other. I gave up in the middle of the night and went to sleep in one of the bunk beds, but it didn't lead to a good night's rest.

All in all I think the Hostel has a lot going for it. It's certainly a good value place to stay in Cuenca.

My party of 3 recently stayed at the Hostal Villa Del Rosario for 1 week and had the most wonderful time! The Hostal is CLEAN and the Host (Luis) and Hostess (Delores) are wonderful people who make you feel like family. The rooms are painted in bright lovely colors; some have netting (like hammocks) hanging from the ceiling, all rooms have clean sheets and soft SWEET SMELLING linens and comforters. Our Suite had a Private Bath with HOT WATER! They have WiFi throughout, a HUGE Common area with a big screen TV that has English Cable Stations. Guests also have access to a fully stocked kitchen, so we had hot tea and coffee available on demand. With so many international guests, we were fortunate to taste various soups and other fresh vegetable delicacies prepared in the kitchen.
The Villa Rosario is perfectly situated in the colonial section of Cuenca, close to EVERYTHING. Taxis are always available in front of the hostal, but the Hostess will call a personal taxi and pre-arrange your fare with trusted drivers. I will never stay at a different hostal while in Cuenca!

Room Tip: Although the street noise didn't bother me, for a quieter room, request a room towards the back...
