An atypic building, and a nice visit for the fans of religious architecture in Latin America ! They sometimes organize live music performances, must be nice because the nave is really beautiful. The organs are also worth a look.

Interesting place at one end there is a big pipe organ and at the other there are life sized statues of Jesus and the apostles. A side room has a wooden scale model of the new cathedral, complete with the towers that were never built. It's a great way to see what the architecture of the new cathedral is- you can't get a good view of the real thing- it's so big and the streets are so narrow it's hard to get a look at it.

We loved this cathedral. It is absolutely stunning. Wandering around the main nave, the hand-painted murals on the ceiling are fantastic. The life-sized sculptures of Christ and his disciples depicting the Last Supper are amazing and then....you enter another room and..... I am not going to spoil it. This you have to see for yourself. Suffice to say, it moved us all. The placement of the lighting throughout the cathedral only enhances the experience. Excellent.

The old cathedral is the one that does not have the landmark blue domes. It is situated across Parque Calderon from the new cathedral. It has been made into a museum. One of the exhibits is a solid wood model of the new cathedral done by an architect. The chapels are beautiful. The church is also used occasionally by the Cuenca Symphony Orchestra for a few of their concerts. Allow at least 40 minutes for a walk through. Pictures are permitted.

I love all the hand craft architecture, it is amazing what the culture created and preserved for 100's of years. Can anyone say that in a Urban infested city? The older women dress traditional and all appear the same age. I hope it does not go away as it is a dying genre literally.
