“A Colonial Style Hostel”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 May 2013

Arrived at Macondo Hostel at 6.30pm.after a 4hr.bus journey from Aluasi.
Chose bedroom with ensuite, clean and tidy, small room, hotwater but no tv. Breakfast is included.
Found the staff to be very helpful,as the lock on my rucksack, jammed,(don't buy a cheap lock) I don't know her name, but the young lady on reception, wouldn't rest until she had sawn through it with a axesaw.I was very grateful,as all my clean clothes were in it.Also, after we had left, we had a email from them, asking if I had left two chains behind,as they were found in our room.I
hadn't,but was impressed,all the same!

Room Tip: The patio area,is ensuite, more expensive & better ofcourse, mainly because it is alot quieter.

I stayed in Hostal Macondo for two nights, in the smallest but really cute room next to the patio garden. The shared facilities were clean, the breakfast was basic but good and the garden is very peaceful. But I also recommend this hostal for its friendly and helpful poeple who work here. I happend to forget some clothes and I asked per email if it was possible for the hostal to send my clothes to another hotel, since I wouldn't return to Cuenca. I got a reply immediately and yes, when I arrived in Guayaquil, there was a package for me at the reception from Macondo. Wow, not every hostal would do this! All in all is Macondo a perfect starting point for exploring the pleasant city centre of Cuenca.

Room large and clean. Three blocks away from the cathedral, so it is not in the middle of the center. They provide free tea in the kitchen, and you can use the shared refrigerator for keeping some food. There is no inetrnet in this hostel although they say there is. There is one very old laptop which they permit limited 30 minutes use and you need to pay for extra time. In any case, the internet connection in this laptop never works. The wi-fi is also very poor for smartphone, we were not able to use internet while our stay here. Rooms are cold, no heating system available but there is nice and hot shower. Breakfast includes fresh juice, coffee/tea, bread and cheese but there is extra charge for eggs or fruit. I didn't like the fact that they tried to charge us more for our 3rd and 4th night stay as we extended our stay and first two nights were booked by an agent in Quito. Apparently there is 10% discount for booking by agencies in Quito. So if you are gonna stay here, at least book in advance by agent to enjoy the 10% discount.

Very nice hostal. Huge room for thé 3 of us. Only reason I gave 4 is because they did not warn us thé bathroom was shared before we arrived. Very quiet from 10 pm to 7 am. Nice location, 10 minutes walk from thé cathedral nueva. Safe to walk at night.

Relaxed quiet environment short walk to el centro. Stayed 4 nights for $108 in room with double bed, table, room to spread out and spacious bathroom. Comfortable warm bed gave a great sleep. The usual early morning noises but most rooms are well spread out and never a problem getting back to sleep. Wifi strong throughout and in room. Nice garden with plenty of places to sit as well further sitting areas on balcony and in lobby. Secure building with excellent reception and kitchen staff. Book exchange. Kitchen for guest use including fridge and gas stove etc. Pretty much have the run of the place and as good as any self contained accommodation. Hot water although nozzle in room 6 could be better and one morning no hot water first up but was ok after breakfast. Would definitely stay here again. Variety of rooms and location is good. $3 from airport and $2 to bus station. Bus tour of town for $5 and 90 minutes a good way to get your bearings.

I stayed in two different rooms for a total of six days. Despite heavy traffic in the street outside none penetrated inside. The staff were unfailingly helpful, attentive, courteous and friendly without ever being obtrusive. The service was what one might expect paying much more. Rooms and beds were clean and comfortable and cleaned with fresh soap, towels and hand towels daily. Breakfast was as generous as one wished and unlimited safe water available at no charge. Wifi was fast, free and reliable. My pick out of seven weeks' experience in Ecuador.

Room Tip: The rooms at the back are newer and quieter and closer to the open garden leading off the balcony ar...

I highly recommend this hostal to anyone loking for comfortable , affordable lodging. The rooms are very clean and comfortable. THe building is charming with it's colonial features and courtyards. The room price includes a very nice breakfast served buffet style. Unlike the majority of hotels we have stayed at the hot water here actually works and stays hot the entire time you are in the shower...
