“Pluses and minuses”
Reviewed 7 December 2013 via mobile

My husband and I (27 years old) stayed here for 6 nights. First week of December .

Pluses:
*comfy beds and blankets
*watermelon juice!
*can pay extra $ for additional breakfast items
*clean
*rooms near reception have high ceilings and are very "colonial"-Ly cool
*pretty garden

Negatives:
*"double" beds are, IMO, not big enuf for two adults to sleep well. Get a room with 2 beds if u are a light sleeper like me
*free breakfast is lame . Sliced white bread and jam/butter lasts me about 1hr and I'm hungry again. (Go to cafe San Sebas for some real food.)

*the attitude of the receptionist is variable. Some nice, some a tad annoying and craze-ballz.

* the quiet rooms around the back garden are def quieter, but they have really low ceilings and are much more cramped than the loud ones by reception . I just jammed in some earplugs . I preferred the style of the colonial rooms by the reception.

5-8 min walk from tutto fredos. Location is fine.

The shower in room #1 around the pretty garden gets lukewarm at best. Just warm enough to hope for the best, and then dashes your hopes of a hot shower after long days of horse riding and hiking . Hrmph , maybe it was because that bathroom shares a wall with the laundry area ....

I stayed at the Hostal Macondo for a week in October 2012. The place is clean and comfortable and the staff friendly. I speak very little Spanish so my interactions with staff were limited but nevertheless enjoyable. No problem making my needs know. Hostal is within easy walking distance to all the sites one goes to Cuenca to see. Enjoyed sitting in the courtyard and watching the hummingbirds. No tv or phone in room. Do not know about internet. Breakfast room was a good place to meet other gringos visiting Cuenca.

Basic and nice.... Just a few blocks away from the Cathedral and location is good as you are still in Central Historic/Colonial Cuenca. I stayed in room 3 all the way in the back which are the best rooms as they are less noisy. Breakfast is basic and good for the 40 $ we paid. No TVs or phones in the room, which you don't need anyway as you spend all day walking around this beautiful city.

We stayed here 3 nights and in 3 different rooms. My Mom had the tiny single room by the outside stairs (7a). The bed was comfortable and the blankets kept her nice and warm. This room did not have its own bathroom. My Daughter and I stayed in 7b with a double bed right next to the bathroom. It was very nice. Next, my daughter and I stayed in room 11 it was right near the front desk. It had 3 beds and its own bathroom. There is some noise from that room because its close to where people are coming in and out. The Hostel has wooden floors and it does creek quite a bit, especially around the front door. Our last night was in room 5 out by the garden. It was a double bed with its own bathroom. It was nice to have a bathroom in the room. This was a very quiet place to stay with plenty of areas to sit and read. They were very helpful and accommodating and it was a great deal. It was great that my Mom could have her own room without breaking the bank. The location was great too. I would definitely go back there again.

This charming hostel is in a colonial house with lots of character, centrally located in old town. The rooms are arranged around social spaces, an indoor atrium, and an outdoor garden. Tastefully decorated and full of interesting art and antiques. The staff are very attentive and friendly. Breakfast is included. Enjoy the tranquility and catch up on some reading there are no distracting televisions.

If you're looking for a room that you'll want to lounge around in then this is not the place for you. Our room was small with just enough room to walk around the double bed.

On the upside, the room and the bathroom were spotless and that's what counts the most when you're in a city to sight-see.

Staff was very helpful in telling us how to catch a bus or taxi. Breakfast was simple but ample. Location was great for hitting all the sights.

I would recommend this as a clean, safe place to stay while in Cuenca.

Room Tip: I'd agree with other reviews. Get a room in the garden area.

Took refuge here for one night after bailing out of a disastrous three day tour (another story). Rooms arranged around two courtyards, one inside and one well kept garden. Free water and basic breakfast but no guest kitchen. Very good location for walking old town Cuenca. Emergency pizza just across the street!
