“Excellent inexpensive hostel”
Reviewed 21 February 2014 via mobile

Please note that 5 stars are given for this category of inn, to wit a $30-40 place to stay. This is not a luxury hotel but a well located hotel/hostel at a great price. The room I had for $35 was located next to a garden/ courtyard with beautiful blooming bushes. There is a kitchen with refrigerator which is available to guests and where breakfast was prepared to order. My room was not huge but big enough and, remember, I was paying $35. Very conveniently located in the old town. Tables and hammocks in the courtyard for visiting. A very pleasant stay in February 2014.

Within the limits of the old town, but closer to the edge, this is a good basic place to go. The rooms are simple but clean. Yet, the quietness of the inside gardens with their chairs and hammock are the perfect place to take a break. Most of the staff are quite attentive, either while preparing breakfast or at the front desk, and responded to all questions and requests without hesitation. Breakfast (coffee, juice, bread and fresh cheese), while not stellar, it definitely helps you to start the day. Definitely recommended!

We stayed for four nights. Nothing special, but just expected stay. We stayed at a backyard room. The room is somewhat small, but clean. They have a beautiful backyard guarden. Breakfast was fine - bread, cheese, coffee, tea, and juice. The location is good. I have a mixed feeling about the staff service or travel advice. I asked for a transportation advice for the visit of the nearby Cajas National Park. We wanted a two hour tracking for Laguna Toreadora. Hotel staff strongly discouraged us to go to the park by ourselves, but encouraged us to go with a hotel provided guide for $100 (two people). After consulting with the government tourist office, we decided to go there by ourselves without a guide. Cajas National Park is beautiful. We saw many tiny flowers during Laguna Toreadora tracking. It took two hours to walk around the lake. We stopped many times to take pictures and see wild flowers. You do not need any guide for the Laguna Toreadora tracking. The trail is well marked. It is well used and we did not have any problem to find the walking track. There are also so many tourists on the Laguna Toreadora track. However, you may need a guide if you take a longer non lake track. For a transportation going to the park, we hired a taxi for both ways. We negotiated with a taxi driver for $35 for a round trip including two hour waiting time at the park. Hotel staff, however, provided a good service for our transportation need in Guayaquil. We wanted our hostal in Guayaquil to arrange a taxi pickup at the bus terminal. The hotel staff called our Guayaquil hotel to arrange the bus terminal taxi pickup. We were happy with this service.

We stayed at Macondo for 2 nights as it was highlighted as recommended on our footprint guide. The building is actually very nice and clean but I think it's overrated and overpriced. The breakfast only includes bread butter jam and juices, if you want eggs or fruits you need to pay! Plus don't pay with credit card cause the fee is 5%!!! Staff was not very helpful either. The room was nice and clean, old bathroom. Not recommended for young travelers!

I had read that the old, nice looking colonial rooms are not so recommendable due to being noisy because they are close to the reception desk. I therefore had asked for a room surrounding the garden. Well, it was a very small room and although with window it feels dark and I felt like suffocating. A strange thing is that there was no door to the bathroom/toilet. It's still new and clean right now, but nevertheless it felt awkward. The bathroom didn't have a window to open, it only had a tremendously loud vent (as did the neighbour room's bathroom). The head of your bed is parallel to the open bathroom. You don't dare to [--] during your stay obviously. Although it was a new room there was some water damage on the ceiling of the bathroom, maybe even mold in the corner, but I am not sure about this. An absolute no go was: the room service had not checked the toilet paper, before I entered the room as a new guest. So I had some rests of a role and no second role. The room is with breakfast, but if you want eggs or fruits you have to pay extra, which is also quite weird. Another big minus: payment with credit card costs 5% more, which you only learn to know on payment day. All in all this place, which is clean and quiet, lacks a bit of flair and charm.

While some of the rooms are small, it is still a very comfortable place to stay. I spent 4 nights there in June so the nights were very cold but there were plenty of blankets on the bed and also a small electric heater in the room. Breakfast is the usual Andean Hostal fare and if you wanted something different the chef would prepare it for a small fee. The entire staff are friendly and very helpful in finding information or telling you how to find something or someplace. I required a doctor while I was there and they were able to locate an English speaking doctor in a very short time.
The small garden area is filled with flowers and hummingbirds.

My husband and I (27 years old) stayed here for 6 nights. First week of December .

Pluses:
*comfy beds and blankets
*watermelon juice!
*can pay extra $ for additional breakfast items
*clean
*rooms near reception have high ceilings and are very "colonial"-Ly cool
*pretty garden

Negatives:
*"double" beds are, IMO, not big enuf for two adults to sleep well. Get a room with 2 beds if u are a light sleeper like me
*free breakfast is lame . Sliced white bread and jam/butter lasts me about 1hr and I'm hungry again. (Go to cafe San Sebas for some real food.)

*the attitude of the receptionist is variable. Some nice, some a tad annoying and craze-ballz.

* the quiet rooms around the back garden are def quieter, but they have really low ceilings and are much more cramped than the loud ones by reception . I just jammed in some earplugs . I preferred the style of the colonial rooms by the reception.

5-8 min walk from tutto fredos. Location is fine.

The shower in room #1 around the pretty garden gets lukewarm at best. Just warm enough to hope for the best, and then dashes your hopes of a hot shower after long days of horse riding and hiking . Hrmph , maybe it was because that bathroom shares a wall with the laundry area ....
