Stayed 3 nights and was very pleased. Hotel seems to be a bit outdated but was very clean and comfortable. Staff was friendly and helpful. Biggest drawback is that there is no elevator. Most times this wouldn't be a big deal for me since there are only 3 floors but on this occasion I was suffering from altitude sickness.

Room Tip: Try to get a room on the second floor near rear.

Dear Guest

To all our staff was a pleasure to have received your check, the customer reviews are always welcome and listened to continue improving our services and facilities, as you know Cuenca Hotel, is the oldest and classic hotel establishment in town; We are doing studies for a future installation of an elevator, studies that allow us to properly preserve the spaces of this ancient building.
We invite you to return to Cuenca, we will be happy to serve you and meet your expectations.

Best regards

We arrived at 9:30 PM from Quito tired and very hungry so happy to learn that the restaurant is open! I forget what I ate but do remember a delicious and perfectly executed Pisco Sour. We had booked for 10 days and were given an enormous, very attractive suite facing the street. We found that to be too noisy for our country selves and were moved to a lovely courtyard room. The young owner/manager David was always available and he and the staff smiled and did their best to manage our many requests (spouse acquired a sinus infection with a fever and David brought in a fan for his comfort) The breakfast had a tasty variety of well prepared local foods. All of the restaurant staff were full of energy and fun to be around. I especially enjoyed talking to the chef, a very interesting man with interesting English. Also if you are hoping to meet other travelers, breakfast is a great place to do it. Almost forgot.... the showers are hot and strong!

This place is a huge house converted in a hotel. The results are great to the eyes, but unfortunetely, walls are thin as paper. We could hear everything that was going on in the other rooms...and I mean EVERYTHING! Also, even if our room was on the third floor, we could hear the front desk phone ringing loudly at every hour and remain often unanswered. The staff was very friendly, but unable to do anything to help with the excessive noise. The other real problem was the lack of ventilation in the rooms, both of the rooms we had were very stuffy. There is also a weird smell in the hotel, that reminded us a bit of chinese food, and clung to the clothes and lugage after we left the hotel for good. On the other end, as I said earlier, Cuenca hotel has a nice staff and a great location, at walking distance from every market and many museums. Just remember, if you choose to go to this hotel, bring a bunch of ear plugs!!!

Room Tip: Rooms with windows that opens on the interior court are very noisy. Rooms close to the staircase ar...

After an exhausting trip from Guayaquil to Cuenca, my driver suggested that I stay at "Hotel Cuenca". I was greeted with such warmth and hospitality by the lovely receptionist Belen. She immediately took care of everything I needed, plus more! The fact that she spoke fluent English made communication a breeze. My Spanish is none existent at this time. I've been traveling through Central and South America without a detailed plan and Cuenca happened at the last minute. My two day stay was like being at a Hilton, modern and clean. Maybe noisy at times, but really what hotels don't have that problem in major cities?
As a relatively new employee Belen was a natural in customer service and satisfaction. Through her I met the very charming David and his family that own this hotel and other longer term properties. I was able to get a suite with a kitchen just blocks away from the hotel for two weeks. Maritsa who takes care of that building was also warm, friendly and tried to help as much as possible. However the lack of my Spanish and her English was pretty comical and most of our conversations were through google translate. But when my questions became more difficult she would call Belen to translate.
Now the tip of the iceberg was when Belen took me under her wing and on one of the days she worked second shift she took me in the morning to see several Cuenca attractions. On a Sunday her only day off she invited me to her traditional family gathering. I felt so welcomed and special to be able to sit at the family dining room table with her husband, mother, brother, aunts, uncles and the many cousins. This to me was a true Cuencana experience! This is how I will remember Cuenca and Hotel Cuenca for being smart enough to hire this "Absolutely Fabulous" young lady.

Room Tip: Ask Belen to help you with anything you need. She will try her hardest to make it happen.

I really, really wanted to love this well located hotel in Cuenca. David, the owner was a wonderful host and welcomed us warmly. However, we had to check out early due to really excessive noise. We were in a room that bordered the open stairway to the lobby level. First problem is that there was no outside window, so the ventilation was non-existent. We were able to open a small window in the bathroom that opened onto a small (10x10?) interior area that was shared by several other rooms, so doing that eliminated any privacy in the bathroom. The other 'window' available opened into the common area on the 2nd floor where we were staying, but that allowed all the noise from the hallway and lobby below into our room. That, and if we were to lift the blind on that window, other guests would have had a direct view into our room. The first night was sleepless, with lots of tossing and turning due to the stuffy air, noise and warmth. I slept with a wet towel to cool myself! I really wanted to check out the following day, but my spouse convinced me to try it for another night as we were a bit road weary from more than a week of adventure travel. The second night, we were treated to the sound of children running amok, with no adult supervision, along with the sound of the printer at the front desk which starts at 6 a.m. (we had thought that it was an alarm clock going unanswered in another room on both mornings we were there until we were checking out and recognized the sound as their old dot matrix printer) the sound of the front desk phone ringing, (often unanswered), loud discussions at the front desk, and guests passing back and forth to their rooms. Other items that made the stay less than satisfactory; cold water for both morning showers, a front desk which almost always had a line of people waiting for assistance, a staff which did not speak any English until around 10 am when additional staff came in, an outdated bathroom and a TV with few channels. This could be a gem of a property with a little attention to detail and consideration for the creature comforts of a guest. For the price it should have been a hotel, and not a hostel. We ended up changing hotels on the 3rd night and for less money we found an elegant, quiet and well appointed hotel with a view of the city. I do want to mention the restaurant staff however, who were extremely nice and accommodating!

Room Tip: We had a room that shared an open area surrounding the stairway and above the lobby. It's a don...

This hotel has some of the quietest rooms I have ever stayed in. I stayed in an apartment type of room that had all interior windows so we didn't get any of the noise from the street. The Hotel is located in Old Town just a few blocks from Parque Calderon. The staff was polite and friendly and most spoke English

Room Tip: They had a nice work out gym area

I spent three nights here in July. The rooms are attractive, the shared spaces are beautiful, the included breakfast is quite good. The excellent staff was always ready to be helpful. However, other guests seemed to have no sense of night time politeness. They walk through the halls 11, 12 pm 1 am talking and laughing loudly. Sometimes right outside of my door. The street noise is also loud. One day I asked about earplugs, a young man in a stereo store--2 doors down from the hotel, walked around the city with me for over 25 minutes trying to help me find earplugs. To no avail. People in Ecuador don't seem overtly friendly but if you ask for help--especially if you are using their language. people just stick with you till your problem is solved. Police officers are especially helpful. Think about the room you choose before checking in and ask for a quiet room. It is a lovely hotel and at $44. a good price.
