We spent two nights at this hotel, one of which was our Anniversary. All the staff were friendly and very helpful. Our room was beautiful, the decor was very tasteful, and it overlooked the hotel garden. It was a delight to watch the numerous humming birds that were there. We ate in pergola part of the restaurant, which has a romantic feel about it. As the hotel knew it was our anniversary, we were given a bottle of wine to help us celebrate. The public areas are also a delight, particularly the inner, covered courtyard, which has a beautiful fountain adorned with fresh flowers.

I have no hesitation recommending this hotel. The level of service is second to none. On a Thursday evening, there is a piano recital given by an American.

Room Tip: If you can, get a room with a view of the garden.

This beautiful hotel located in the old centre of Cuenca has everything we appreciatie in a hotel. The service was excellent, the food at the restaurant in accordance with the hotel level and the friendliness of the staff above what you may expect even at this level. The only minor point was the noise coming through the adjoining suite ( only a door between)

What I Liked Most: The hotel itself is an old colonial house with a central courtyard and a well-kept garden; room size

What I Liked Least: The loud piano music in the late afternoon, which permeates the entire hotel; bar closes early and there is no mini-bar in the rooms.

Stayed here for a few days to relax after a Galapagos trip. The first impression was very favourable indeed. The front desk staff are helpful and friendly. The place itself looks genuinely like it might have looked when it was lived in by a family. This is a double-edged sword, as everywhere there are old photos of people who presumably lived there. The room is pretty big, but also totally cluttered with lots of photos, which become irritating after the first hour or so when they have lost their quaintness.

We had dinner here the first night and it was very good, although our two preferred dessert choices were unavailable. Breakfast is a bit lame. You can have eggs with ham or eggs with bacon. Tea and coffee are available and end up being self-service as the waiter is often AWOL. Not a big deal you would think, except all the pots look the same, so you have to experiment to get your preferred combination of coffee, hot water, hot milk and cold milk. Cuenca gets a bit cold at night, which means it's also cold in the morning. There's no heating in the breakfast room so wrap up warm.

The central courtyard looks nice. During afternoon tea, a guy plays the piano. Seems normal enough, but the piano is very loud and/or the acoustics are very good, so it's extremely loud even in the rooms (at least those adjoining the courtyard, which is the majority). You can't even hear your TV.

There is a delightful garden, with plenty of birds. It's also a good spot for afternoon tea for those wishing to enjoy the outdoors and get away from the pianist. The dirty cups were still there until late the following morning.

We came back from dinner outside just after 10pm to find the bar closed, and no possibility of ordering a beer even on room service. The rooms do not have a mini-bar.

There is a gym nearby with weights but no decent cardio equipment. Wifi is passable, though with frequent sign-ins.

This could be a great hotel with a few easy-to-fix improvements, though it's a B&B more than a hotel.

We spent 2 nights at the Mansion Alcazar as part of a trip to Ecuador and the Galapagos. We were upgraded to the deluxe suite, enjoying views of the beautiful gardens and a ringside view of nesting hummingbirds in the palm tree outside our window. Little touches such as the chocolates, brooches on the pillow at night as well as the hot water bottles were a welcome touch. The standard of service was excellent; breakfast first class and the meals we took in the restaurant, well presented and delicious. The internal courtyard with its flower decorated fountain is an oasis of calm. The location of the hotel is ideal for exploring the city. Please ignore the rating for the swimming pool - there wasn't one! I accidentally rated it and can't seem to delete it. Tripadvisor please note!

You feel that you are guests in a family home - albeit a mansion - at Alcazar. The staff are helpful, the decor in keeping with the age of the mansion, details everywhere, antiques, paintings, and the humming birds in the garden. We stayed in a garden room suite on the ground floor. The room was small and there were some design faults - like not being able to open the door if the luggage rack was 'out'. There is an even smaller room among the garden suites on the ground floor in the corner - ask to see the rooms if you can before you unpack; the first floor rooms in the garden suites are I believe larger than those on the ground floor.

In the main block rooms are of varying size one is a huge suite with drawing room.

The staff are great, and the food was excellent. Some of the presentation exquisite., again attention to detial was evident throughout.

As we wanted to explore Cuenca on foot this hotel is perfectly located.
The staff were wonderfully helpful to my group (ALP tours) they sorted out all sorts of odd requests and we were more than satisfied. Thank you to all concerned

Mansion Alcazar is a remodeled beautiful old house in a lush garden. Most rooms enter from the central atrium except for the Garden suites in a separate building at the rear of the property. We stayed in Garden Suite #303, an upstairs room of generous size with a small sitting area. It included a large bathroom with a walk-in shower. The hotel is attractively furnished with period furniture and is situated in a lush garden with many flowering plants. We counted three species of hummingbirds joining us for lunch there.
The small hotel restaurant is excellent with a surprisingly full menu for its size and serves better food than any other we visited in the nearby area. If you wish, you may enjoy a romantic meal in the glassed-in Gazebo in the garden or in the garden itself with good weather.
The hotel lies within three short blocks of the main square area in the old town. Most all of the historical points of interest are located in this area along with many shops. The modern part of Cuenca lies well away from here and to me is an large, uninteresting city of cheap small buildings and heavy traffic. Even so, getting around by taxi is ridiculously cheap. Three dollars will take you almost anywhere, including the airport or out to the Ortega Panama hat factory, a must.
The staff is very friendly, fluent in English, and anxious to please. My wife enjoyed a massage.
My only criticism (I'm OLD!) is the rooms are uncomfortably chilly. None have central heating, but the staff will bring a small electrical barely adequate radiator to plug in. This is not unique to this hotel; no remodeled hotel we stayed in along the Andes Ecuador spine has heating. These people are under the illusion that since they are on the Equator, it is warm even though above 8000 feet altitude. It is NOT warm even though all the young people (blast them) are in T-shirts. (Did I mention I am OLD?)

Room Tip: For larger size and more privacy, reserve a Garden suite room
