Description: The Alpandina dishes offered by the Zig Zag Restaurant are the result of a creative culinary fusion deeply rooted in the mountains, where the sun endows foodstuffs with energy and balanced components. The dishes most representative of Alpandino gastronomy arise from a marvellous synthesis of unique time-hallowed ingredients from all over Peru, combined with ancient and modern culinary techniques from the Alps and the Andes. One of the results is our great speciality: Volcanic-Stone-Cooked Meats and Fish. This culinary concept was generated specially by the restaurant's proprietor and Chef, Michel Hediger from Switzerland. During the course of many years in Arequipa, Peru, he has developed an original gastronomic proposal which enables one to savour different kinds of food prepared in an exclusive, healthy and very natural style, so that the restaurant's customers might compare and enjoy the country's different flavours. Located in the Historic Centre of Arequipa, opposite the lovely Plaza San Francisco, the Zig Zag Restaurant, with its impressive cast iron staircase designed by the famous French architect Alexandre Gustave Eiffel, is a unique place to enjoy a gastronomic evening with a difference.

Considering where you are in the world, Zig Zag is an exquisite experience. Service was excelente, we tried a good selection of what was on offer and all good, some unique flavours. Bravo to experimenting and incorporating local products. Perú is one of the richest places on earth and we need more entrepreneurs like these guys so the world keeps evolving. The only thing i'm certain of for my next visit to arequipa is that I'll be back to Zig Zag. Lovely owners, I don't mind supporting their dream!

Just blocks off the main plaza, this delightful restaurant is world class. Our party of 5 was seated in the Miro room, a private room with Miro reproductions on the wall and a great Miro-esque stain glass window.
Service was attentive, but leisurely, as is typical for this continent.
They specialize in meats, and the lamb, beef, alpaca, pork and duck (which can be ordered as 3 or 4 plate) were all superb, cooked to order and served on hot volcanic rocks, from which one could remove or continue to cook meat. Sides (mostly potatoes) and greens (salad or ratatouille (not exclusively eggplant) were solid, not exceptional, but greenery in Peru isn't Northern California abundant. Soups , creamy tomato and chicken, were hearty and well seasoned.
Desserts, including triple chocolate mousse, passion fruit ice cream with meringue, truffles, and apple pie with Arequipo Cheese ice cream (light and delicate, not at all heavy) were divine.
Although one of our higher priced meals in Peru, with wine meal about $22/ person, a superb value.

We absolutely loved our dinner at Zig Zags. The fresh bread and different butters to start off with and then the absolutely perfect meat on the hot stone made it a perfect dinner. To round it off the desert combo was amazing. Great service and amazing food!

We tried this restaurant based on the excellent reviews on this forum and have to say that we were disappointed.
First off, the location is kind of out of the way and required walking in not very lighted area. Not knowing the city and staying for only a couple of days that may not be the best experience.
The restaurant is nicely decorated and the staff very attentive. The food presentation is beautiful, but the food was not very tasty or flavorful and the prices were very high for what you get and for Peru.

Dear LovestotravelCA,

An outstanding dining experience for each guest is very important to us, so we are sorry to learn that, while pleased with the ambience and attentive service, you were disappointed overall.

Located inside the well-lit, heavily-trafficked and patrolled historic city center (with the lovely Plaza San Francisco and its imposing church directly in front of our restaurant), day or night, nearly all our guests arrive on foot, so we are surprised and regret you felt unsafe in the neighborhood.

Our lean, healthy meats and fish are brought to the table on a sizzling hot volcanic stone with a minimum of seasonings, but served with 4 of unique, savory sauces. Usually their first dining experience of this kind, we encourage our guests’ experimentation with their selections so they are “finished” to their precise liking. Our waitstaff is always pleased to make recommendations and substitutions when requested.

In addition to our renowned stone-grilled offerings, there are many other menu choices, including a few tempting vegetarian options.

Again, we are sorry to hear you were disappointed and would appreciate another opportunity to delight you during your next visit to Arequipa.

Sincerely,
Michel Hediger
Chef Proprietor
