We took the 2-day inka trail which means km104-Machu Picchu day 1 and Machu Picchu guiding day 2. We also took the optional Waynapicchu hike from Machu Picchu. Everything was very well organized, from the contact before the trip and all thru. The guide Ruben was very good and the general standard with hotell, food etc was also great! Km104 means you get of the train to Aguas Calientes at km104 and walk uphill at a new trail. At about 2/3 of the way you join the original Inka trail! This was very beautiful and it was impressive to reach Machu Picchu thru the sun gate! Second day the guiding in Machu Picchu was a lite short because of our hike to Waynapicchu, Unless hiking is your main objektive I would skip the Wynapicchu hike and have a longer guiding instead! In all, one of the best organized tours I’ve done!

We travelled with Guiding Peru this June. We had amazing Trip! We booked the Deluxe 7 day Inca Trail package, but replaced Inca Trail with Moonstone trail because we enjoy hiking in more secluded areas. It became an 8 day package.
Right from the start the planning went really well because John was always answering my numerous questions very quickly. This was very reassuring to me.
The organization is amazing. We had 3 days to get used to the Cuzco elevation, where we visited very interesting sites and ate really good food.
Guiding Peru keeps the groups small, which provides very efficient care for each participant. And they guaranteed departures for 2 people or more. My husband and I ended up for that ride just the two of us, with the guides (our guide Carlos and his apprentice were really great), the horsemaster, the chef and 5 horses! It was truly unique and we could not have hoped for better. Going through those mountains in such a peaceful and lonesome setting was just amazing.
The coordination for the initial 3 days of visits is very well done. Guide and chauffeur picked us up at the hotel every morning (really nice hotel by the way) and we would drive to various really interesting sites. The vehicles were always in good order and we felt secure on the roads. It gave a really good initial view of this part of the country (which used to be the Inca Capital, so lots to learn). On one of the days we were paired with a group of 4 Americans for the visits, and this was really nice.
It’s a good thing we had these 3 days before we hit the mountains. I had some altitude sickness at the end of the third day mainly, but which did not last long.
On the fourth day when we left for the hiking along the Moonstone, the guide picked us up again at the hotel and we drove off to meet with the rest of the team and the horses. Our guide Carlos was really knowledgeable and adapted the tour to our desires, encouraging/enduring us along the way on the rougher parts. He was accompanied by an apprentice guide who also contributed to making the whole ride real enjoyable.
We would walk a great part of the day. The horsemaster and chef would go up ahead of us to set up camp for lunch, and then again in the afternoon for dinner and for the night.
It is a demanding hike for people not used to altitude. It was sometimes discouraging to see these guys move ahead to go set us up. They would really speed to get to prepare everything for our arrival. By the time we got there, all was ready for us.
The chef Jorge (hope I’m spelling it right) was really really good. Most lunches, we would have a three-course meal (soup or salad, meat / vegetables, dessert). And this was done on a small camping stove with a limited set of cooking gear. It was always really tasty and really welcome after a demanding hike. Then would come dinner, where again there would be a minimum 3-course hot meal. Real tasty! Lots of potatoes, which is their national crop and pride (we love the stuff, so it was nice to have lots of them in different forms). Plus one night Jorge even made a cake, without an oven! Again amazing.
The camping locations were calm and remote. We would be woken in the morning with a hot cup of coffee and some hot water for washing, and told that breakfast would be ready in 30 minutes. Always with a very friendly, very caring attitude. We would leave after a hearty breakfast and they would take care of dismantling camp and all. They would then pass us along the way to go set up the next. This is deluxe camping.
We are quite experienced hikers, but we are used to sea-level and up. The highest we had hiked was South Rim of the Grand Canyon down and back up, so around 7 000ft and no malaise. On the day where we went to the highest elevation (4 400 m/14 500ft I believe it was), we felt like we were walking in space. We had to go so slowly in order for us to metabolize the oxygen properly. On that day I got altitude sickness on the way down (headache, vomiting). One of the horses is a safety horse, which is there just for that purpose: to be able to get down even if you are really not feeling well, or for any other emergency. The last hour of that morning hike I did on horseback, until we got to our lunch camp. I was not really able to eat lunch, but was ok to walk down the rest of the way. Next day I woke up as if nothing had happened. Strange thing this altitude thing… It’s good we had a few days to get used to it before we hit the trails. We took Diamox during the hike, which probably helped.
On the last day, we went by train to a hotel in Agua Calientes to be ready to leave real early to get to Machu Picchu. We were some of the first in there, and Carlos took us up to a really great spot to watch the sunrise. Just this moment made the whole site take its full meaning. It is a great site to visit, gives a real glimpse of a culture that must have been very special.
The remoteness of the mountains, the quiet warmth of accompaniers, the whole way the logistics worked, the quality of the hotels and vehicles, all was perfect for us… what a wonderful trip! I would recommend this trail to anybody who likes the wilder mountains.
Thanks to the team that took such good care of us. I would go back with Guiding Peru any time!!!

This trip exceeded our expectations in every way for sure! Stunning beauty of the Andes in the Ancascocha region was like nothing we have seen before.
Our Cusco guide, Rueben, gave us a very interesting introduction to Incan history and local culture in Cusco and the Sacred Valley while we were adjusting to the altitude. He willingly shared his knowledge and answered our endless questions!
Our guide for the backcountry, Carlos, is exceptional and he led a very capable team in the wilderness. He is knowledgeable about Incan history, the Andes mountains, the people of the high country, the plant life and birds in the region and he shared his knowledge with passion and enthusiasm. He encouraged us in a very supportive way to reach those high altitude passes.
Our chef, Iphrim, and his assistant, Eder, created beautiful and delicious food for every meal — soup followed by main course with at least three choices, and then dessert. We were amazed by the consistently good quality of the food and the beautiful presentation with attention to detail! Wow!
Chief horseman, Gregorio, is an expert when it comes to horses and it was a pleasure to watch him and his assistant, Rosmer, in action.
We were inspired by how this group, with Carlos’s leadership, were such an effective team. They all worked very hard and we feel so fortunate to have been able to tour Cusco, the Sacred Valley, Ancascocha and Machu Picchu with their support. We couldn’t have done it without them.
Thank you Guiding Peru team!

John and the guiding Peru team were awesome at helping our group coordinate our Inca trail hike! One of the members in our group was unable to attend the hike at the last minute, and the team completely coordinated an alternative plan to ensure that the group could still meet up and see Machu Picchu together! He and team are extremely responsive and helpful. Would absolutely recommend!

Simply amazing.

We went as a small group (private tour) with our friends and did the 4 day Salkantay Tour with Guiding Peru.

First of all, we (as a group) never wanted to do a tour group when in Peru while making our way to Machu Picchu. We wanted to do it on our own, but discovered we needed the tour group for the permits up to Machu Picchu. After researching, we decided to go with Guiding Peru.

We were SO HAPPY that we decided to go this route. Carlos, our tour guide, was fantastic. We were also accompanied by cooks and a driver who were also great. We had some of the most delicious meals while on the tour and had nothing close to comparison during the rest of our time in Peru. When you do these tours, you often end up at base camps with groups from different tour groups at the end of each day, and our tour group was the envy of others. Because the tour incorporated not only hiking, but mountain biking, white water rafting and hot springs, we often had the folks from other groups eager to hear about how our day was and ask their group guide why they couldn't do the same thing.

I also want to give a big shout out to Carlos, our tour guide. He was patient, knowledgeable, fun, and approachable during the entire tour. We couldn't get through the tough Salkantay hike without him, and he absolutely made Machu Picchu an incredible experience for us - he knows what he's doing and talks about Machu Picchu (and all things) with such sincerity. He knew to get us up to the gates first thing in the morning, and away from the crowds so we could see everything in the peace and quiet of the morning. It was a trip that we still are in awe over, and Carlos had a large part to do with that.

This is the group to go with - I plan to go back someday to do the Inca trail, and I won't do it with any other group or tour guide. Thanks Guiding Peru!

Thank you for your "amazing" comments on our guide Carlos and the team that led you on the Salkantay Tour into Machu Picchu. The 4-Day Salkantay Multi-sport tour is unique to our company and one hat we are proud to say is exclusive to our company as we utilize a route that no other company in Peru offers. We welcome you back anytime and appreciate your recommendation of our company. Best wishes.

My experience with GuidingPeru tour company was superlative from start to finish. They were polite, professional and knowledgeable of the history, Flora and Fauna of the area. The equipment provided was of good standard. The guide Frank was excellent as was the cook! The whole team responded very quickly and professionally when one of us required medical evacuation, which proved their professionalism. Having experienced tour companies in Africa( Kilimanjaro) , Nepal(GOKYO trek) and so on, I would recommend this company without any reservation. Well done John!

My husband and I loved this tour company. You will be very pleased with your experience with them. We did a trekking and biking tour and loved every activity. Carlos our guide was knowledgeable about the Inca history and enlighten us about their culture. We had a great chef and assistant preparing our food when out camping or picnicking. The food was delicious and very healthy. They had snacks and water available for our activities as promised. The hotels were excellent. I would definitely use this tour company again.
