“Great value and fantastic service”
Reviewed 29 July 2013

We stayed at this small guest house for 5 nights either side of a trek to Machu Picchu and we had a fabulous time. The rooms were big, bright and clean. The water was always hot and we received fresh towels each day. The beds were very comfortable and also made freshly each day. The hotel is located at the top of a steep hill but we enjoyed the wonderful views from San Cristobal and the exercise was good for us (even though it was only 7-8 minutes walk to the central plaza). The staff always had a friendly greeting for us each day and they went out of their way to assist us - carry bags to our rooms, offering advice on our trek and helping us to book transport to, and a hotel at, our next destination. The price for the guest house is a little more than we would usually pay, however we were able to negotiate a very good deal by staying for several nights and also by foregoing breakfast. We'd really recommend anyone to consider this hidden gem in a quiet and pictuesque area in Cusco. Thanks for a great stay!

The hostel is situated close to the top of a hill near the Touristy site of Saqsaywaman. If you don't want a 10-15 minute walk up hill then it is not for you. The taxi will take you here from town costs about 5 soles. We stayed for about 7 days before and after Machu Picchu. The beds were comfortable and clean, the shower was warm enough and breakfast was juice, hot drink and bread. The WIFI is only really good in the open area. Its a basic option and good for what we paid.

Room Tip: Choose a room closer to the entrance near Pumacurco as was warmer and also good reception for WIFI.

My husband and I have been traveling for 6 months through Central and South America, and this was by far the worst service we have had at a budget hotel/hostel. Upon arrival we were left waiting in their sitting room for over 45 minutes without explanation...just told to wait. Our room was musty and very cold. After asking for a space heater, we received one that did not work. After our only night stay we went down to the included breakfast, only to find there was one person working and people had been waiting a VERY long time for bad coffee and stale bread. Needless to say, we packed up our bags, moved to another hotel, and ate a warm breakfast at a cozy cafe located in Plaza De Armas. Chincana Wasi is also in a very poor location. A taxi cannot make it up the hill that it is located upon, which is disheartening when the temperatures are so cold in the evenings after dinner. I would never recommend anyone to stay here!!

I recently returned from Cusco and stayed at this hotel for three nights (before and after the Inca Trail). The rooms were very nice with attention to detail (pictures, night tables, lamps that work, and nice decor). The bed was comfortable and room clean. I do have to say, that upon inspection, some of the rooms were a little musty smelling. My room had this smell but the smell quickly left once air was able to circulate (there were not too many customers at that particular time). The staff was friendly and helpful. The breakfast was very basic which is very common in Peru. Some cooked eggs would have been nice but not provided. The only downfall is that it was at the top of a hill so it was a bit of a hike but it was good training for the Inca Trail (no taxi used because for me the exercise is more important)!! This meant that it was very quiet. Some of the comments I read on this hotel made me wonder what some people expect when you are booking 2 and 3 star hotels. If you wanted all these added perks then why didn't you book at the Hilton? If you are a budget traveller than expect what you pay for!!! Overall a very good experience for me.

Simple hotel with a nice covered innercourt. Looks really cosy.

Walking distance to down town, but certainly not going back. Is on top of a long, steep hill, so you need a taxi to get from town to the hotel. The hill is that steep that even some taxi's cannot make it all the way !
Wouldn't book this hotel again.

Don't expect any frills when you book this place to stay for a few days, it is what it is and thats a decent little hostel that you stay in either side of your trip along the Inca Trail.

It is basic but myself and my friends found it to be clean, yes there is an issue with how much hot water there is depending on how busy the hostel might be but, we were collected from airport at the start and transported back free of charge, there was bottles of water and tea there when we arrived, all we had to do was ask the staff and we got beer if we needed it and even a pizza delivered.

When we finished the Inca Trail we arrived back late but the staff were still up and about to help us with our gear, all our bags that had been left with them for safe keeping during the Trail trip hadn't bee messed with and was as we left it.

The rooms had tv and a security lock box, the internet connection is abit slow but hey what do you expect??

The hostel is situated halfway up the mountain but this gives you great views over Cusco if not a very healthy walk up and down the path to and from town (good practice for day 2 of the inca trail)

I wouldn't stay here for an extended period but if you want something for a couple of days as part of a bigger trip or as we did a base either side of the Inca Trail its ideal and very well priced and I would use it again

My girlfriend I stayed and Chincana Wasi for a total of 4 nights, either side of our Inca Trail Tour. Due to the time of year, the hotel was very quiet, however the staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful. We arrived fairly late, however the receptionist insisted on showing us a variety of rooms around the hotel to ensure we were happy! He also then advised that he could arrange takeaway food from a couple of restaurants in town(proper restaurants, not generally takeaways) in case we didn´t want to go out again. All the staff spoke an adequate amount of English and were more than enthusiastic to understand your requests!

The rooms are of a good size and cutely decorated. The views of Cusco from the front of the hotel are excellent. The bathrooms are adequate and once you leave the powerful shower running for a few minutes there is limitless hot water. The central courtyard is really nice, however a little chilly this time of year. There are heaters available for the rooms (AT NO EXTRA COST) and the internet is pretty much free.

The only slight downside of the hotel is it´s location. It´s a 5 minute walk up a steep hill from Nazarena Plaza (and the main Plaza de Armes), which when you first get to Cusco is a little tough due to the altitude. However it is a good way to quickly get aclimatised and a very very safe area. The location is however EXCELLENT for the magnificent Sacsaywaman Inca ruins, Saint Cristobel Church and San Blas Plaza which are all very close by.

Overall a really nice stay and we are very grateful to all of the staff at Chincana Wasi for the excellent service and friendliness.
