“Fabulous rooms, great location, nice spa. Highly recommended”
Reviewed 12 July 2011

We were upgraded to this hotel on arrival, probabally because the tourist numbers were down due to the strikes and issues. But if you read my review of the other hotel, then we were really lucky! The rooms was truly huge. Great beds, quite modernist inside but old building and set around a courtyard. huge balcony on which we had breakfast brought every mornings. nice cocktails and canapes in the room in the evening.l Great and massive bathroom. Spa is also nice, we had a very large jacuzzi to ourselves! Location is prime, close to the Plaza des Armas, and centre of town. Staff friendly. We had a master suite, and the only fault is that we were over reception, and they played music really loudly from around 6am. To the extent that I actually went down twice to get it turned down. But if you have one of the other rooms this wont be an issue. I would recommmend this hotel. We didnt try the restaurant, because the food options in cuzco and great!

Room Tip: Dont go for one over reception!

Stayed here for 2 nights on the way to Machu Pichu and one on the return. Great location! Try to visit Cusco in June, apparently they have many festivals. I enjoyed parades with coloful costumes and children dancing for all 3 days of my visit! Had a great lunch at the MAP cafe just around the corner from the hotel. Very nice modern rooms and good room service.

We are a family of three with an 11 y.o. child who stayed at the Casa Cartagena for four nights in April while exploring Cusco and the Sacred Valley.

Stayed in a Suite (room no.3) located on the ground floor. Beautiful, spacious and clean. The décor is modern with few local touches, such as Peruvian cushion covers and wall hangings. The room had everything one would needed for a comfortable stay. The two double beds were huge, comfy, with lots of pillows and great linen. Desk, minibar, small table with two chairs, wardrobe with a safe, shelves, 2 drawers, hanging space with hangers, 2 bathrobes and 2 pairs of slippers, iron and board. Flat panel TV with a few English channels. Wooden floors. Small terrace with a table and 2 chairs. A welcome gift of beautifully presented chocs was brought into the room when we just checked in. Huge bathroom. Loved the modern shower with a rain showerhead. Big bath. Nice toiletries (shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, body lotion). Great fluffy towels. I'd prefer for the bathroom to have natural light though which it did not. The room was kept meticulously clean. Two bottles of water supplied daily. Also, a cocktail and a selection of canapes (yum!) were brought into the room after 6pm. This was included in the room rate. Free wi-fi in room and throughout the hotel, good speed.

Breakfast buffet was served on our last two days when the hotel was full (or nearly full). On first two mornings, staff simply took breakfast order the night before. You could have anything you wanted and the quality of the food was excellent. The hotel bakes own bread daily and makes own cheese; both bread and cheese were superb.

The courtyard is very atmospheric and a nice place to be on a sunny day sipping a drink. The spa is very nice although we only used the small pool and the sauna.

The service was superb and personal throughout. Special thanks to Managut (hope I spelled the name right) who was helping us at breakfast and was a good source of tips and information about things to do in Cusco, the Sacred Valley and also about local life.

We also arranged private transportation through the hotel to do a trip to the Pisac area and a transfer to Ollantaytambo with stops at the agricultural terraces of Moray and salineras of Maras. We had the same driver, Umberto, on both trips. Umberto did not speak English but this was not an issue as I understand/speak some Spanish but the service and commentary he provided was excellent. Umberto took us on dirt roads through the Sacred Valley to allow us to see local life outside of the tourist trail and this journey was one of the highlights of our two week trip in Peru.

The location of the hotel is also very convenient to Plaza de Armas (5 min walk), MAP and Inca museums, San Blas, bars and restaurants. Jack's Cafe, Cicciolina, Fallen Angel (good for a drink) are all close by and excellent.

Overall, a great base to explore Cusco/SV. Would stay again in a heartbeat.

Casa Cartagena is an amazing hotel. It is a gem located in an amazing city. This hotel is the best choice after a long day in Machu Picchu. The staff is remarkable and very eager to assist.

Overall, casa cartagena completed my visit to Cusco.

We spent 3 nights at Casa Cartagena in April 2010. The grounds were immaculate. The accommodations were outstanding. And above all the staff was wonderful. Each staff person at all levels was very warm, kind, attentive to our every request, knowledgable and helpful. We also had several meals onsite, some in the courtyard, that were all excellent.

beautiful hotel, great location, but the key is the service. they could not do enough for us, and offered so much that we ended up turning down much of it (free massage because their workers made noise one day, pre-dinner drinks and snacks, etc.).

while pricey for cusco, it was well worth it. if you go and want to see the sacred valley, make sure you ask them to line up a taxi and guide. they were great, we saw a lot more than the people who took the bus tours, and they took us to each site at a time when it was uncrowded.

also, unbelievable breakfast was included. they ask you the night before what you want, and no matter what it is or what time you want it, they will make it or get it.

My friends and I stayed at this gem to ring in 2011 and we simply loved it. The Spanish style setting with a lovely courtyard made for a perfect place to come home to. As you strollf through the colonial façade and opened the doors to your room, you suddenly take a giant step in to the 21 century. The over-sized rooms with the high ceilings were furnished with all the amenities of a modern hotel. Avant Garde furnishings, flat panel tv, mp3 player and a bathroom that makes your jaw drop. The location is superb to explore all the sights and shopping that Cusco has to offer. The icing on the cake was the helpful and pleasant staff. They truly made the experience at Casa Cartagena an unforgettable one.
