“Great hotel in Cusco”
Reviewed 20 November 2012

Casa Cartagena stands out among the more reasonably priced luxury hotels in Cusco.

The place is very beautiful, featuring a nice combination of modern design architecture aptly fitted into a historic building, surrounding a beautiful courtyard.

The room we had was huge and funkily furnished. Clearly some architect has had a thought or two, before getting the contractor's to work -- which is always nice. They might have forgotten to check that the contractors actually did what they dreamed about, as some of the design details look nice, but turn out to be less practical (or les well realized) as the initial idea suggests ... the bath room door didn't close entirely, aeration in the bathroom was an issue, although the room had huge space, there wasn't much room to hang clothes or anything. But ... hey this is definitely the most thoroughly designed hotel, we have stayed in in Peru during our 2 weeks vacation.

The common spaces of the hotel are great, as mentioned, a very beautiful synergy between the 17th and 21st centuries, nothing to say here (and definitely better succeeded than at the JW Marriott, a couple of blocks down the road). They have a small pool, a great sunny courtyard, a business center fitted into a gigantic stone alcove ... just cool.

The restaurant serves the best boutique style made-to-order plus buffet breakfast we've had in Peru. We tried it for dinner one evening -- there the food and service didn't quite live up to our expectations and the restaurant's modern design, but the prices were at moderate Peruvian levels (sort of S/. 40 for an entree without much pretence).

The local designer-kled staff is very friendly and we felt them to be genuinely concerned about customer's well being. Forthcoming with outside restaurant recommendations as well as Cuzco do's&dont's, efficient and helpful probably characterizes them best.

Accounting organization doesn't seem to be the strong side of many Peruvian hotels, so we had one or the other discussion on when and with how much and what currency our credit card should be charged, but it all ended up as planned and within the usual margin all local hotels seem to make on forex dealings, even when paying by credit card.

It's clearly a recommended place in Cusco.

Room Tip: We had #12 which was great, although two Queen beds rather than a King.

I stayed at Casa Cartagena in october. The hotel is fantastic. The staff is amazing and the general manager Juan Carlos went out of his way to make sure our stay was just perfect!!!!
I highly recommend this hotel if you're looking for modern luxury combined with old world charm.
I visited other hotels in Cusco, but I have to say that Casa Cartagena was my favorite, both in terms of comfort and class, and the great staff that works there.
The hitel is just off the main square and across from Fallen Angel, a cool, hip bar/ lounge that is a must visit when you' re in Cusco
The hotel has a Spa/ sauna which I used every evening after a day of walking around the city, and the breakfast service is outstanding.
One of the thing I enjoyed most about the hotel was the decor and furniture, all imported from Italy.
I highly recommend Casa Cartagena.

Room Tip: from the simplest to the best, they are wonderful

We enjoyed our two nights here on our feturn from Machu Pichu. The hotel is in a lovely restored old house, decorated in a modern style, and is in a great location for exploring Cusco. Our room was large, light and airy with good bathroom facilities, and we especially enjoyed relaxing on our terrace looking onto the beautiful courtyard. The staff at the hotel were all extremely helpful.

If we could give more than a 5 rating we would. We travel a lot and I can honestly say this is the best hotel that we have ever stayed in. The unassuming entrance on a narrow street opens up to a beautiful courtyard. The hotel is immaculately kept and we loved the combination of old and modern decor. The rooms are large, with large bathrooms, separate bath
/shower, and "toilet" room. The two rooms we stayed in both had balconies overlooking the courtyard where we enjoyed a cup of coca tea each afternoon.

The included breakfast was plentiful and had a good choice of American, European, and Peruvian foods as well as the most beautiful made to order egg dishes. We were able to use the spa facilities including the jacuzzi and sauna. We did each evening when we returned from a busy day of sight seeing. The area is candlelit and extremely relaxing/romantic. We also booked massages one afternoon which were excellent. We did not eat in the restaurant but we did do the Pisco Sour lesson in the bar with Edison which was a lot of fun.

The hotel location, just a few minutes walk down the hill to the Plaza de Armas was very central without being noisy.

However, what really made Casa Cartagena stand out was the outstanding staff. From the moment we arrived we were made to feel special and the staff went out of their way to make sure our stay was just perfect. We did have a glitch with our pick up from the airport but the hotel resolved the problem quickly and more than to our satisfaction. Because this is a small hotel we got to know many of the staff during our 3 night stay. Magaly was extremely helpful during the reservation process and all of my questions, Victor had great restaurant recommendations and organized a driver for us to visit the Sacred Valley, Edison at the bar was very helpful and also the other young lady who was on the reception desk. (We apologize that we can't remember your name). The service was personal and attentive but never pretentious and made our visit!

If you are going to Cusco, you HAVE to stay here.

This hotel is a real jewel. It's everything and more than its great reviews. The staff at the hotel, especially Victor, are very accommodating. We loved the location, on the same block as the extremely expensive hotels, on a quiet cobble stone street a block from the main square. The rooms are large and modern with all the comforts of home. Flat screen cable TV and beautiful bathrooms with robes, slippers, and L'Occitane bath products. With all the comforts, this charming hotel still feels like authentic Cusco. Great breakfasts included. The gift shop also has beautiful items.

Myself and my wife had just finished the inca trail in April 2011....wet, dirty and long.
As a treat, I booked us in for a couple of nights into the Casa Cartagena - expensive yes - rooms were amazing, breakfast equally so (and delivered to the room).
We did not eat in the restaurant given that it is in the middle of the town, so location is superb.
It is like an oasis in the greater madness that is Cusco.

An unbelievable experience. I travel a lot and normally stay in 5 stars hotels around the world and Casa Cartagena was definitely beyond my expectations! Not only for the beautiful facility, cleanliness, delicious meals including breakfast and room service, but specially because of the STAFF!!! What a crew!!! Every single person that works there is amazing and friendly! They simply do what ever then can to make sure the guests are happy and have a good and comfortable stay! I normally don't have time to write reviews but this one was different because is one of the types of hotels and places I would recommend to everybody!!!! Hope the owners are taking care of the employees and paying them well because they really are the best business card the hotel can have!
A big thanks to everybody there that made my trip from NY to Peru an unforgettable one!!!!
