“Great staff but the guest house itself is not so great”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 May 2011

there were just too many things that need work. We stayed here for a week.

Our bathroom had the most horrible odour coming out of it and we had to keep the door shut at all times, though on the plus side the shower did have hot water if you let it run for a few minutes first.

The room was also very cold at night with no heating and the floor was very very noisy, I felt so sorry for whoever was in the room below us with all the squeaking floor boards early in the morning.

Also it is a good 10 - 15 mins walk from the Plaza del Armas which is not ideal and they keep the front door locked at all times, so you have to hope the front desk staff are there at whatever time of day and night to let you in or out. We didn't have a problem with this but could imagine that it would be very frustrating if it were to happen. I wasn't comfortable with this as I like to have direct access to my room and stuff. Also they leave the lights on in the central courtyard all night and the blinds are not lightproof which may annoy light sleepers.

All that said for USD$45 a night we got a comfortable bed, a hot shower and friendly front desk staff most of whom had a decent level of English.

We stayed at the Yanantin Guest House for 4 nights and if we had not paid in advance we would have moved hotels after the first night. When we checked into our room there were rodent droppings on the floor and the bathroom had not been cleaned. As well the bathroom was covered in mold and had such an overpowering odour that we had to keep the bathroom door closed so the smell didn’t come into our sleeping area. There was something unpleasant smeared on the wall that had not been cleaned off. The toilet was filthy, it leaked on the floor and no one had cleaned it in some time. The floor to the bedroom was so dirty that we had to walk around in our shoes. I don’t believe anyone had ever cleaned under the beds. The climate in Cusco is chilly and most mornings we would wake up to temperatures of around 40 degrees Fahrenheit in our room but there were no space heaters available.
At 12:30am on the morning we were to wake up at 4am to start our hike I was awoken to the sound of the buzzer at the front door. It continued to ring until I went to check. It was two hotel guests who were locked out. Unfortunately I was not able to let them in because the door required a key. I checked the entire place for a staff person until I finally found the night man soundly asleep in one of the guest rooms. I had to shout to wake him up to open the door.
After our hike we spent one final evening at Yanantin – we had been moved to a room downstairs and the bathroom was just as filthy – no one had swept or washed the floor in some time.
The one bright light was the staff – specifically Carla and Cesar who both responded to all our requests to the best of their ability and tried very hard to make our stay comfortable.

Room Tip: Don't pay in advance

Good afternoon Mr. Baskett,

Our aim is always to ensure that guests have a comfortable and pleasant stay in Cusco, as such we would like to take the opportunity to sincerely apologize for the inconveniences you encountered during your stay. Your comments went straight to management, and through him maintenance has been made aware of the need to address the problem areas you mentioned in your remarks. The problem with the replacement nightman was extremely unfortunate; thus, we are also undertaking measures to ensure that all replacement staff from here on out is as able as regular weekly staff (who appreciate the kind comments directed towards them).

Your feedback is important to us- we hope to use it in order to ensure that our guests can be made comfortable during their stay.

Thank you,

We stayed there twice, before and after the Inca Trail. Cons: Loud and Noisy: The first time we were in a room on the street side, which starting at 10pm-1am the local boys loudly play futbol outside the window. Second time there we asked for an inner room, but it turned out the dividing wall between our room and the next was paper thin and we literally could hear everything our neighbors said or did; not fun when they are boisterous and come home late. Regardless of the room, we didn't have a good night sleep any of the five nights we were there because of the noise. Pros: Breakfast (toast, yogurt and Peruvian granola) served at anytime, nice for early morning Inca Trail departures. They hold your luggage for free while on the Trail. Free coffee and tea anytime. Location was ok, about a 10 minute walk from the center. Beds were comfortable, duvet is nice and rooms seemed clean.

The place is situated on a quiet, narrow street just a 10 minute walk from the Plaza de Armas. Qoricancha is located only a few blocks away. The room was clean and beautifully decorated, with one of the best hot showers I had in Peru. The staff is friendly and helpful, and there is complimentary breakfast in the morning which consists of bread, jam and butter, hot water for coffee or tea, granola, and yogurt. There is also free wi-fi at the hotel. We were able to catch a cab to the airport quickly and inexpensively just down the street, although the front desk was more than happy to have a cab called for us if we needed it for only a few soles more. Overall, the place was an amazing value for the location and quality, and I would highly recommend it to anyone traveling to Cusco.

I stayed in this cozy place where they treated me as a family guest. I felt very comfortable with a personalized service. I was impressed by the great service yet affordable price. In Cuzco location is everything, the closest you are to the Plaza Mayor the better off you are. All the must-see places, shopping, nightlife and restaurants are within a walking distance from the Plaza Mayor. Yanantin is convenient because it is close to the Plaza so you don't have to spend money on transportation. Rooms are amazing having a combination of modern and classic architecture. If you don't like the Big hotel chains and you prefer a more personalized service then this is the place for you. Someone recommended me Yanantin Guest House and I wanted to pass the recommendation to you as it made my trip very comfortable. I will be coming back again for sure.

Yanantin Guest House had service that went above and beyond, great security, wonderful staff, and the location is a 10 minute walk from the main plaza. I'd return every time I'm in Cuzco, and I'd recommend it to anyone going. The morning we went to Machu Picchu they called a secure taxi for us at 5:30am had breakfast at 5am ready. They even gave a wake-up call. Excellent, excellent hotel.
