Tierra Viva Cusco Saphi

Reviewed 8 May 2011

My husband and I stayed here for 3 days before and then 2 days after hiking the Inca Trail. This is a small, lovely hotel - the decor combines stylish references to Cusco's colonial history and ethnic traditions while offering very attractive, comfortable, modern accommodations. Other visitors had commented that Tierra Viva always seems to have plenty of hot water, and after 4 sweaty days on the Trail I was delighted to come "back home" and enjoy the simple pleasures of getting clean and relaxing in this relatively luxurious setting.

The TV, WIfi and telephone service from the room were all quite convenient, but best was the attentive service. Day and night, the reception desk was always staffed by knowledgeable and attentive helpers. They can help direct you around town, give restaurant advice (best: Chicha, owned by famed chef Gaston Acuario) and help make arrangements for all kinds of visits in the area, all without leaving the hotel. When I became ill they also helped make me more comfortable and summoned a doctor, who arrived very quickly.

Breakfast was tasty and varied, always accompanied by a cosy fire in the hearth, and coca tea was always on hand. Tierra Viva's general ambiance is respectful and caring but youthful and lighthearted. It is a calm refuge from the city - the location is a few blocks up from the Plaza de Armas but that distance put it in less congested area which made evenings very quiet. (There was a neighboring dog who spoke up from time to time, but apart from that the neighborhood seems quite calm). Our room was not huge but so well provided with comforts that it seemed very spacious. We loved this hotel and recommend it highly - the rooms do open onto a courtyard so perhaps it would be best for couples, singles and families with older children. We hope to go back again and again.

This place is perfect. They do everything..for you just ask.
The rooms are a good size, cozy with heaters include, luxurious bath robes and flat screen tvs. Everyone is helpful and eager to please.
Only problem is the breakfast eggs have butter so my daughter wasn't able to partake as she is allergic.

The hotel was almost empty but still they gave me the smallest hotel room I ever have stayed in. (103) The bathroom had no ventilation so the damp never left the room when I took a shower. And to sleep in damp/moist is not a pleasent experience. I tried to tell the staff in the morning but no reaction. Also having this room with window fronting the "yard" - I was woken up by breakfast staff 05.00 who was talking and laughing loud. That is a little to early for my taste being on vacation :)

I think next time I´ll go to Cusco I will stay a little closer to the plaza in a different hotel with bigger rooms, great service and paying half of the price .....

When all this is sayd -- I looooooooooved Cusco !!!!

Dear Kari 69,

We are so sorry that you left our hotel disappointed. Yet, we completely disagree with the comment you have written about our hotel.

All our individual rooms, as you can see in the hotel pictures, came with a queen size bed, 2 bedside desks, a big closet, LCD TV and a beautiful bathroom. We are sorry if you felt that a queen size bedroom was small for an individual room.

Regarding the ventilation, all our bathrooms do have ventilations and this is the first complain we have about it.

According to our policies, our staff can give upgrades but depends completely on the hotel occupation, and the days you have stayed with us, we had 80% of occupation.

Regarding the noise you are referring on your comment, the room 103 has a beautiful view of the first patio, which is not close to the breakfast area. Yet, we apologize if you heard some kind of noise that could wake you up.

On the other hand, we have standard prices, and the price of an individual room is USD 70, that includes airport pick up, breakfast buffet and services. Once again, we are sorry if you felt that USD 70 was expensive for an individual room, in a Tierra Viva Hotel that is only 3 blocks away from the main square, but we cannot charge less for the quality of service we give and the infrastructure we offer to our customers.

We are glad that you enjoyed your visit to Cusco, and we hope to have you again very soon at Tierra Viva.

Hotel is very nice and staff is very friendly. There are a lot of staff members working for you at the same time which can seem chaotic and resulted in our case that one of our passports was lost for a short period of time and we were asked about check-in three times. Communication between staffmembers might be something for them to work on.

Rooms are very spacious, comfortable and nice bed. Internet is free and fast (for South American standards). Hotel is also very clean (again for South American standards). Free luggagestorage when we went to Machu Picchu (you can only take 5kg of carry-on luggage on the train) was also great!

Breakfast is included and is nice (scrambled eggs&sausages, toast and jam/ham/cheese and some lemonade/coffee/tea). We'd recommend going to this hotel but suggest to keep an eye on what's happening to prevent any communication errors

Tierra is a fantastic hotel. The staff were friendly and very respectful. The people that managed the front desk were very accomodating and just generally a pleasure to deal with.

The rooms are spectacular. Very modern and clean. So much more than I expected
for the price.

A big selling feature for me was the bed. It was incredibly comfortable and they give you many big puffy feather pillows... I didn't want to get out of bed!

HUGE two thumbs up for this one!

We were amazed by this hotel. Service is very warm and careful. Rooms are comfy and modern, with designer details. And the benefit - cost percieved is really high, since you feel you are getting much more than what you are paying for. Been many times in Cusco, but this is the nicest little hotel tried there, by far, up to now. Must try it.
