My husband and I stayed here for 3 days before and then 2 days after hiking the Inca Trail. This is a small, lovely hotel - the decor combines stylish references to Cusco's colonial history and ethnic traditions while offering very attractive, comfortable, modern accommodations. Other visitors had commented that Tierra Viva always seems to have plenty of hot water, and after 4 sweaty days on the Trail I was delighted to come "back home" and enjoy the simple pleasures of getting clean and relaxing in this relatively luxurious setting.
The TV, WIfi and telephone service from the room were all quite convenient, but best was the attentive service. Day and night, the reception desk was always staffed by knowledgeable and attentive helpers. They can help direct you around town, give restaurant advice (best: Chicha, owned by famed chef Gaston Acuario) and help make arrangements for all kinds of visits in the area, all without leaving the hotel. When I became ill they also helped make me more comfortable and summoned a doctor, who arrived very quickly.
Breakfast was tasty and varied, always accompanied by a cosy fire in the hearth, and coca tea was always on hand. Tierra Viva's general ambiance is respectful and caring but youthful and lighthearted. It is a calm refuge from the city - the location is a few blocks up from the Plaza de Armas but that distance put it in less congested area which made evenings very quiet. (There was a neighboring dog who spoke up from time to time, but apart from that the neighborhood seems quite calm). Our room was not huge but so well provided with comforts that it seemed very spacious. We loved this hotel and recommend it highly - the rooms do open onto a courtyard so perhaps it would be best for couples, singles and families with older children. We hope to go back again and again.
