“Good location”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 May 2014 via mobile

We stayed here on 5/12/2014 & 5/14/2014. All the arrangements were done for us via a tour package that I booked through CTM tours.

Overall, I am satisfied with this hotel, I do recommend it and would return. Minor details don't make this a 5-star hotel. One key thing with me that I appreciate is that It's CLEAN, this is a must with me. The staff is professional and friendly. The building itself is a mixture of modern and rustic, with some "indigenous" & religious art and decor. The location is great because it's in a small street, tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the main plaza, but still of walking distance from the center of Cusco. They also offer free wifi, although the connection is weak and seems to disconnect randomly. They do complimentary wake up calls, if you ask for it.

When we arrived the staff informed us that they have a terrace on the rooftop, accessible to their customers. We decided to visit that rooftop and I must admit, it's a very nice view of the city.

Our room was clean and spacious. My only complain is that the bed was too hard, there is no heater and considering that it gets very cold in Cusco, the blankets the hotel provides aren't enough to keep warm. They also didn't have any hair conditioner, only shampoo and even when I went to the front desk to ask, they had no conditioner. I was bummed because for once I didn't take my toiletry bag only to have the hotel not offer what I needed. (My mistake.) There is however, a nice sized tub to soak in, which helped after our long arduous hike up Huayna Picchu.

WARNING: The lobby floors are of rocky material, apparently waxed or somehow cleaned in a way that makes the floor VERY SLIPPERY. I decided to put on my sandals as soon as we arrived, to rest my feet, and decided to walk out into the lobby and nearly fell on the slippery floor. Also the floors on the second floor creek a lot and feel unstable. (This is a concern for me.)

The day we arrived we ate at the hotel. My husband ordered a chicken sandwich and I ordered a chicken soup. The sandwich was okay, nothing out of the ordinary. The chicken soup was bland and the potato was still raw, so I was really disappointed. Personally, the price didn't meet the quality.

There are little mom & pop stores around the hotel to help buy basic items like water, snacks, etc. if you don't feel like walking all the way to the main plaza. There is one small restaurant around the corner from the hotel and a place to have your laundry done for you. There is also a small mom and pop pizzeria, approximately half a block away from the corner, which we did try after our return from Machu Picchu. The pizza was done in a rustic oven by a young couple in their golden years. We tried "la especial" which consists of bacon, ham & sausage. They give you a side of mayo and aji to top the pizza with. It was good and reasonably priced. Unfortunately, Cusco eateries don't do take out, which is disappointing when you're tired and trying to just rest and eat in your room.

They serve a "continental" buffet breakfast from 5am - 9am. It's not a huge selection, but satisfies the need. They offer primarily bread, ham, head cheese, cheese, eggs (either scrambled or boiled,) fresh fruit, sausage, dry cereals, jellies, fresh juices, coffee and teas.

Looking forward to returning.

Excelente hotel, but when i was ready to check out, they charged me a 10% premium for paying with a credit card. This was very annoying, at least they should warn you at the time of check in. But except for this, I had a great stay.

We are glad our travel agency booked this hotel for us.

It is nice and clean. We have been given big rooms with private bathrooms. Quality of sleep has been satisfactory.

Breakfast was ok, with a good variety of foods and beverages.

Personnel was friendly and helpful.

We enjoyed staying at this hotel for 3 nights as it is quite different from other places we've been to. The central courtyard, where they set up breakfast, was very nice & there were paintings & other interesting objects in this area. We were in 2 different rooms & both were adequate to good. Yes, we could hear some suitcases being dragged down the steps in the morning but it wasn't a big deal. The breakfasts were very good. We also had a couple meals there as we were too tired to go out. There seems to be a cook on hand in case you want to eat or have a bowl of soup. The staff was very kind & helpful even though we couldn't speak Spanish. It was an easy walk to the square.

Just a few short blocks from Plaza de Armas, the Plaza San Francisco was a perfect location - quite, easily walkable, with taxis close at hand.

The staff was very friendly and accommodating. Our room was clean, the water pressure good and we were never at a lack for hot water. The two short-falls were nowhere to hang clothes (we made do) and a too-firm mattress (though I've had much harder in my S American travels).

Breakfast was fresh, with slight changes daily. I had my first pisco sour there, and after having many more, I can safely say their's was best.

I/we can easily recommend the San Francisco Plaza as a good value option.

1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 February 2014 via mobile

We were booked at this hotel by our tour provider. We were supposed to stay here for 4 nights, but after the first night, we quickly checked out. Checking out early was one of the best traveling decisions we have ever made.

The rooms are TINY. It is so cramped that we literally couldn't find space to fully open our hardcase suitcase, and when we did, we couldn't walk around the bed or open the front door.

The shower was just ridiculous. It was broken (the top rain shower sprayed horizontally over the shower glass) and sprayed water everywhere and flooded our bathroom. Why anyone would design a shower that used multiple jets with an incomplete shower glass wall/door is beyond me. I went to the front desk to notify them about it (I couldn't just call because their phone doesn't tell you front desk's extension number and we were never told) and was just dismissed with "here, have some towels to clean it up". Awesome. I've never stayed at a hotel where I've had to pay to stay AND mop up their flooded bathroom. Truly wonderful experience; I could've just done that at home for free.

The bed was rock hard. I would've just slept on the floor as it would've been more comfortable, but there was no room. Ha. The pillows were lumpy, hard, and awful - neck aches for everyone!

The tiny desk in the room was coated with some sticky residue. We didn't realise that until we have placed our travel documents on top of it and when we went to retrieve them, it was covered in sticky glue-like residue. Not only gross, but it also ruined some documents for us.

At around 5am, you don't need an alarm or a wake up call because everyone starts dragging their suitcases down the rustic tiled hallways. And because there are no elevators, people start dragging their suitcases down the stairs making loud thudding sounds. Waking up at 5am to suitcase dubstep remixes is not enjoyable.

When we checked out 3 nights early, the staff at the front desk didn't even bat an eyelid. She noted that we were checking out 3 nights too early, but never really cared to ask why or to offer us a quieter room, etc.

In the end, we spent 3 nights at the JW Marriott Cusco where we had a truly memorable and wonderful stay. If you are in Cusco, you wouldn't want to stay anywhere else. Spend the extra couple of dollars and have an amazing time at the JW Marriott instead.

1) shower sprays horizontally across the ENTIRE bathroom. Reported it to reception: "here, have some towels to clean up". Maintenance not necessary, apparently.
2) pillows approx 50 years old. Bed feels like it is pre-Inca stonework with a sheet thrown over it.
3) room is so small that if you open a single suitcase, you can no longer walk around the bed
4) NOISE. 5am people start thumping their suitcases down the stairs on their way to checkout. 6am you can clearly hear cutlery and plates at the breakfast buffet. Do not harbour any illusions that you will be able to sleep late here.
5) the single bench top is surfaced with a sticky enamel that will rip any paperwork or clothing you leave on it.

WiFi was strong in the room, service was polite and helpful. Pity about everything else.
