“Gem in Cusco”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 December 2013 via mobile

This is a great hotel. Clean, comfortable, and welcoming. Staff is friendly, professional, and very helpful. Close to Plaza Armas and all the action. Breakfast buffet was very good with many choices. You can not go wrong with this choice especially if you get a good deal. When I go back to Cusco, I will stay here again. No question.

Novotel in Cusco has a colonial building as its primary focus with modern additions to the property. We stayed at the hotel twice, for two nights before going to Machu Picchu and one night on the way to Arequipa. The first two nights were spent in a modern upper level room which could not be faulted in terms of comfort and cleanliness even if a little small. A door opened to a tiny balcony and a swinging doors led to the modern bathroom. On the second stay we were assigned a two level apartment upstairs in the colonial section with sleeping areas upstairs and down, a bathroom with a heated floor and separate toilet and two large flat screen TVs. After passing through a traditional large doorway on the street, there was a second set of colonial doors always manned by the helpful hotel staff. The large covered courtyard is now a functional breakfast/lunch/evening meal dining area with additional sun umbrellas for very hot days. We found the three breakfasts provided adequate and fresh choices. On our first day we enjoyed a very good lunch from the menu. Wifi is available but in the rooms it is not strong. Many guests seemed to be using their portable computer devices in the covered courtyard. Two complimentary computers are also provided by the hotel in the same area. As the hotel is very close to the central square and Cathedral, its location is perfect for a short-term stay in Cusco. Hotel staff were extremely willing to recommend other exciting places to eat.

Our stay at the Novotel in Cusco was very pleasant, although we did have a little problem waiting for a taxi that never came to pick us up which the hotel apologized for later on, our stay was great. the hotel is well located, very clean, it has a beautiful lay out and very kind staff. We have nothing to complain about. The breakfast which was included in our fee has lots of options. We had dinner there as well and the food was beautiful. Internet is good but we had a little problem not being able to use two computers with the same user and password but as we were on holidays it didnt bother us at all. overall it was pleasant and I would definitely recommend it.

Within easy walking distance of the main square this hotel couldn't be better placed. Its on a narrow but busy street but our colonial room had really thick wooden shutters which shut out all the external noise which meant we had no problem sleeping. There is a large traditional courtyard which is protected from the elements by a large glass roof. All of the staff were first rate, especially Carlos who deserves a special mention, a lovely guy who went out of his way to be helpful. Every hotel should have a Carlos! The one downside we felt were the breakfasts which simply were not a parch on the those of the other hotels we used (mainly Casa Andina Private Selection). But for the breakfasts this hotel would have got full marks.

Room Tip: Upgrade to a colonial room, well worth the extra cost.

This hotel has it all, not only is it within walking distance to most attractions in the main square but its a converted manor style house with plenty of charm. Having the large glass covered courtyard provides a sheltered room with all of the benefits of being outside. No matter the weather you can pull up a chair and relax.

The rooms were clean and comfortable (although i found the beds firm)

I loved nearly everything about this hotel. It is in an excellent location just blocks from the Plaza de Armas (historic square) and cathedral. Restaurants, sights, laundry service, shopping etc etc are all within easy walking distance. The hotel is a converted older building so has character - including an enclosed courtyard that houses part of the hotel's restaurant - which is comfortable, reasonably priced and tasty. The complementary breakfast is extensive and delicious.
My room was huge, modern, clean and comfortable and had a balcony overlooking a quiet side street and up a hill covered in tile roofs. Some of the other guests complained of too much heat in the rooms, but I didn't notice this issue, perhaps because my room had two outside walls and it was cold and wet outside.
If there was private security, they were much more subtle than in Lima. This was a bit of a relief after the excessive(?) prevalence of security in Lima.

On the downside, the front desk staff are easily frazzled and seldom had change for the larger bills dispensed at ATMs - small bills/coins are a critical necessity in Peru. And the concierge did not seem comfortable with his English. Cusco is very much a tourist town - with 40 flights (of mostly tourists) arriving from Lima every morning, so a competent concierge is really important. Finally, the two computers available for guests' use worked well - however, I have NEVER sat at such an uncomfortable set-up in all my years. I could hardly stand to use the PCs for more than a minute or two. Perhaps this is deliberate.

Room Tip: I believe that rooms overlooking the front would be a bit noisy.

This is a nice 4 star hotel with a great central location and nice rooms. However we are currently here for 2 nights and the weather has been hot although cooler now. However the room is stifling hot 23deg to 25deg and there is no air conditioning and the heating is on all over the hotel. If you like us from the UK like cooler conditions and a good night sleep, you will not get this at this hotel. I would have thought for 4 star you would expect air conditioning.
