Don't get me wrong, this is a beautiful hotel and the staff are as helpful, friendly and professional as any staff anywhere, but for $600/night it would have been nice to have a room with a window bigger than a pizza box, or a view of anything but the wall of the building next door, or wifi that worked in the room, or an exercise facility, or a sauna or a hot tub... or any of the other things that any other $600/night hotel anywhere in the world offers. Again, it was nice... just overpriced.

Room Tip: Maybe the more expensive rooms are better? I dunno...

Dear Brent,

Thank you very much for your feedback and comments about your stay with us.
As you know our hotel is a restored 16th-century monastery and important national monument, protected by the National Institute of Culture. For this reason, we cannot modify the original structure to get better views or larger rooms. We compensate that with our lovely main courtyard, personalized service and our very own art collection. You don’t need to travel far to soak up the local culture.

Thank you for choosing us and for letting us know the areas of improvement.

Best regards,

Gustavo de Leon

My wife and I enjoyed staying here - this was the end of our trip and was an awesome place to relax after enjoying Machu Pichu. The hotel is very close to shopping squares and some very beautiful old world churches and Inka Ruins. The Concierge was extremely helpful making suggestions about places to eat and shops.

The building is so fantastically adapted to a modern hotel without disturbing the rich architecture and materials used in the original construction of this monastery. I have never slept in a castle but I imagine the "feel" would be similar. Great staff, great location (do eat at the MAP restaurant on the grounds of the Pre-Colombian Museum across the street), great (really great) breakfast buffet. about the only negative thing I have to say is that the hotel is in Cusco and the elevation knocks the heck out of you before you acclimate. There is a fresh batch of coco tea near the concierge 24-7. It works....but it also will keep you from sleeping due to its stimulative effects. But acclimating at the Monasterio is a first class and pleasurable place in which to do that. The rooms are on the smaller side -- they were originally inhabited by monks! Just a beautiful 5 Star experience.

The Monasterio is unassuming from the outside but something else inside. It is very conveniently located to the main plaza in Cusco.

The rooms were very well appointed suites, excellent amenities, comfortable beds. The food in the restaurant was excellent - good selection, excellent service. The live music was also superb.

I knew this hotel would be lovely and it exceeded my expectations. We stayed in a Presidential Suite (there are 3) and it was worth every penny. We also opted for the room to be oxygenated. Did the oxygen help? I don't know but we felt great besides a low level headache (which was surely caused by lack of proper hydration - and which was alleviated quickly with a bottle of water and a couple of Advil). Having met someone on this trip who was hospitalized with Altitude Sickness, and knowing others on this trip who had to have an oxygen tank brought to their room, we figured it was a small price to pay for (possibly) some extra insurance. There are indicator lights in the room that go on when the oxygen is turned on. I do not think the green light is a scam as their reputation is everything. We did breathe easily but maybe it was psychological to some degree. Also we drank Coca tea as a preventative. It is available in the lobby and tastes quite pleasant to me.

All of that being said, the room was lovely. Actually it was 3 rooms off of a small, quiet courtyard. Quiet that is until the early morning hours when firecrackers go off (yes, firecrackers!!). Scared the be-jesus out of us and of course sleep after was impossible. It happened all three mornings! And the amazing thing was that you could only hear it from some of the rooms. Our friends heard nothing. It sounded to us like the firecrackers were set off directly outside our door! After inquiring at the front desk about what the heck was going on, we found out that the reason firecrackers are set off is to call the people to church!! This is apparently done most mornings - it is not for a special mass which could explain things a little...

The hotel is located on a small and charming square. There is a good restaurant right there, called MAP, and some very nice shops. The staff are superbly trained! We had room service for dinner once and morning coffee twice. Excellent quality and service.

We did some shopping in the Sacred Valley and I had the hotel mail a package to the U.S. for us so we did not have to lug it all the way. Arranging for shipping can be challenging and a hassle. The hotel took care of it in a snap and, furthermore, found a service (called TNT) that was $100 less than the FedEx service we requested.

The bar and common area in this hotel is so warm and inviting. Make sure to order a Pisco Sour here as we feel they made one of the very best.

We found the Monasterio perfect in every way. The property is beautiful and impeccably maintained. Our room was large and comfortable and clean. The paintings reflect the historical background of the building, but if you don't like religious art, just don't look at them. Our breakfasts and lunch were delicious, and the staff worked to accommodate every wish. It is just down the street from the beautiful square.

Unfortunately we stayed at its new sister hotel earlier (right next door) and were thoroughly pampered. This hotel is wonderful, but lacks special touches as no coffee in our room provided, no pool, spa or welcoming touches. Staff friendly but not outstanding. They don't let you know about extra's the hotel offers (cooking classes, opera night). We felt they were resting on their past as being the best but with the newer hotel Placio Nazarenas next door they need to step up. I realize there is a huge price difference, but honestly over $500/night and our room happened not to have a coffee marker? - Really Also we could never get room service so had to call the front desk and they told us to call room service! Phone never worked and my husband had to call maintenance to have our shower door realigned before it fell off!!
