Fortress above Cusco where the Incan's had their last stand for Cusco against the Spanish Conquerors.

While many stones were removed and used in Cusco it is still an engineering marvel, and impressive site.

Strongly suggest background reading before traveling to make the sites come alive. The first half of the book, "Fall of the Inca's" was very relevant.

This type of place, just like "Macchupichu", leaves you in awe!
We had a great personal guide, Angel, who showed us around and told us many stories while gaving us a lot of information about this particular monument, also called "la Fortaleza" (the Fortress).
Originally built as a sacred place, according to the historians, the Incas made their last stand here against the Pissaro brothers.
The feeling you get walking among those huge stones, perfectly chiseled to fit with each other without mortar, just makes you wonder how they did accomplish such amazing big building-miracles!

This is a great place to visit but only with a private guide that can explain everything otherwise you won't understand or appreciate its history and wonder. Place is not accommodating to people in wheelchair which is a shame. If you go, go early in the morning not in the afternoon. This is part of the tourist ticket which gains you access to other sites. Wear tennis shoes. One of the most beautiful pictures can be taken on your way to the site so don't miss it.

We taxied to all the ruins in the area and then did this one last so we didn't walk up from the city. So impressive. Walked among the ruins and saw some llamas. Great spot for a picnic. We walked down when we were done....maybe 10 minutes but downhill.

Beautiful Inca site located in the hills of Cusco where not only the site itself is impressive but the beautiful views of the city too. Probably the second most important ruins after Machupicchu and only 15 minutes away from downtown Cusco. I would recommend hiring a guide (approx. 30 soles) which you can do when you get to the site. Keep in mind you have to buy the "Boleto Turistico" to enter.
